Jenny makes an excellent point. The best rule-of-thumb for genealogical posting etiquette that I have seen - and this applies both to genealogy-related email subject headings, as well as the subject headings used when directly posting to websites - is to include in the subject heading the Name, Date, and Place of your subject whenever possible. For example: "Thomas Sherwood, Brisbane, AU, c1870". If not sure of date or place, include a question mark, or "circa" (or c1800-1850, for example, if you want to specify a range of possible dates), or just use qualifiers like "possibly" or "probably". When it is not known exactly where the person lived, a state or province or rough geographical area works just fine. Just be sure to put something in the subject heading to let readers know at least the country and general period for which you are querying or providing information. This is especially important for an international list like ours, covering Sherwoods scattered across the globe and throughout several centuries. I am probably as remiss as anyone for failing to follow this etiquette, so I'm glad to have been reminded by Jenny. Hi Listmates and probably cousins, I have been stumbling around for sometime now trying to locate the parents/family of my LUCINDA SHERWOOD. I now believe that I have found them and want to post to the List so that future researchers might not have to go through what I have to locate this ancestor. Based on the 1870 MI census data, I put her date of birth as about 1801. Lucinda m. RUFUS HERRICK c. 1825 in Wayne, Steuben Co., NY, where they are found on the 1830 census images online. I'm still looking for their marriage record. Lucinda appears to be the daughter of JOHN HUTCHINSON SHERWOOD and JEANETTE HENDERSON. Though she is not listed among their children on the LDS site, I'm basing my thoughts on the following criteria: The LDS site lists John H. Sherwood with 10 kids including a set of twin daughters, no Lucinda among them. However, at least two of John's children were deceased prior to the 1820 census and son, ANSON SHERWOOD, was married and head of his own household in 1820. The 1820 census shows 8 kids in residence. Add the 2 deceased children and Anson to that total and that brings John's total to 11. Judging from census records placing Rufus and Lucinda nearby in 1830, Lucinda is very likely the eleventh child. Plus, the birthdates listed for John's children allow room for Lucinda as is and even more so if she were part of another set of twins. John and Anson Sherwood appear next door to one another in the 1820 census for Wayne, Steuben Co., NY. They are the *only* Sherwood families in the area at that time: JOHN SHERWOOD, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 1, 0, 0, 1 ANSON SHERWOOD, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1 ... and 8 doors down is... DANIEL HERRICK, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1 The 1830 census for Steuben, Wayne Co., NY finds John H. Sherwood only 2 doors away from NATHAN HERRICK, father of Rufus who is husband of Lucinda Sherwood: JOHN H. SHERWOOD, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0; 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1. Rufus and Lucinda are not far distant, living near his brother, DANIEL HERRICK and family. Rufus is listed in the 1830 Census for Wayne, Steuben Co., NY along with wife, 1 male under the age of 5, one female under age 5 and one female between the ages of 5-10. He is 8 doors down from DANIEL HERRICK. Rufus removed to MI about 1838-1840 probably settling in Washtenaw Co. So, while I realize that it's not absolute proof, it's a pretty solid case of circumstantial information and, unless more convincing proof is uncovered to the contrary, I am listing my LUCINDA SHERWOOD (1801- aft. 1870) as a daughter of JOHN HUTCHINSON SHERWOOD. It would also appear, again according to census records, that Lucinda remarried to a man named WILLIAMS at some point between 1850 and 1860. She appears, at age 69, with the new last name and living with her son, NATHAN HERRICK, in Salem Twp., Washtenaw Co., MI in the 1870 census for that area. Granted, the 1870 census records her place of birth as MA but this is not conclusive. John Hutchinson Sherwood was born in MA. Lucinda wouldn't be the only record I've uncovered that listed an incorrect place of birth. Best, SueB
Hi Listmates, I got a small break on my Sherwood line today. Yeehaw! I now know from census records that my Lucinda SHERWOOD was born about 1801 in MA instead of NY, which is where she was married to Rufus HERRICK. The family moved to mid-MI just shortly before Rufus' untimely death in 1838, leaving a pregnant widow and 5 small children. Question: Is anyone else out there doing any research on the MA Sherwood lines? I sure could use some input here! :-) Best, SueB
Hi Bill, The only Sherwoods that I've ever heard were in Virginia that long ago is the family of Philip Sherwood, b. c1638, d. c1684, Rappahannock Co, VA. Jack Thompson informed the Sherwood List some time ago that Philip's wife was "Sara", and that he may have been from Somerset, England. (See "Tyler's Quarterly Magazine", Jan. and Apr. 1942, an article entitled "Philip Sherwood's Daughters", by John Nicklin.) Philip could be the Philip Sherwood born in Bath, England, in 1638, and the Elizabeth or Mary of whom you write may have been his daughter or neice. I have a note that Philip may have married Martha Pendleton. Also, Phil Sherwood, in a post to the Sherwood List on 3 NOV 1999, added some insight by pointing out that the IGI for England gives several references to a Philip Sherwood in Bath. To quote Phil: "Births in 1580, 1622 & 1638, but no baptisms!" Phil went on to say, "To find the baptisms, if they have survived, you would need to search a number of parish registers for Bath which may be deposited at Taunton or Bristol Archives. In the 18C there was a Sherwood at Bath who was a Physician & notable Catholic recusant." I post this message about every six months and have never got an answer, however I will try again in desperation. My GGGGrandpappy Sherwood Sims mother or grandmother was either Elizabeth or Mary Sherwood. Now you probably get the hint as to why I never got an answer. Elizabeth was born in 1672 in Norfolk Va and died Feb 15 1725'26 in St Pauls Paris Va. She married George Symes (Sims) abt 1687 in St Pauls Parrish Va. Mary d. 1687 Kent Co VA married William Symes (Sims) abt 1670. Does any one have any information on these Sherwoods and also hopefully on the Symes (Sims)??? Still looking for my elusive SHERWOODs. I got some info from the 1900 census, nothing in 1880 census (need another try at that one) and found the following in 1970 census. Silas William SHERWOOD (my GGfather) b. 1840 VA Jane (unknown maiden name) 7 children, 6 living b. 1837 DC Bordine 8yr dau 1862 not sure of spelling Ellen (Ella) 6yr dau 1864 William S 3yr son 1867 (my GFather) Emma I 1yr dau 1869 still missing 2 children and my GGmothers maiden name.
