    1. [SHERWOOD] Sherwoods in the 1868 Gazetteer of Livingston Co, NY
    2. Hi All, The Livingston County, NY, Genweb site has the entire "New Gazetteer and Business Directory for Livingston County Business Directory for 1868" available in PDF format (i.e. readable by Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is freeware). I have culled all the Sherwood information contained in the Gazetteer and present it here with my own parenthetical comments: The following residents of the town of York receive their mail at Piffard: Lydia Sherwood (This could be Lydia HALL, widow of Solomon SHERWOOD. Lydia was b. 31 AUG 1807, Chatham, CT, dau. of Elisha Hall and Hannah STRONG. Solomon Sherwood was b. 18 JUL 1803, Livingston Co, NY, son of Joseph Sherwood and Mary McINTYRE, grandson of Stephen Sherwood and 1st wife Ruth BENEDICT (Stephen's second wife was Elizabeth EGGLESTON); Solomon d. 13 NOV 1852, York, Livingston Co, NY, and was a resident of Geneseo. He and Lydia m. 13 SEP 1828 and had ch (all b. in Geneseo): James, b. 18 JUL 1829; Henry, b. 18 FEB 1834; Alfred, b. 6 MAR 1836.) Residents of Avon who receive their mail at Avon: Henry Sherwood, employee of R.R. (Could this be Henry Sherwood, b. 1844, Avon, Livingston Co, NY? That Henry Sherwood m. M. E. HARVEY of Washington, DC. They had children: Philena (or Philema) and Harry. Both Henry and his brother, Frederick, wrote letters to the Sherwood genealogist, William Lounsbury Sherwood, in 1884 and 1885. At that time, Henry was a postmaster assistant in Washington, DC. In a letter from Henry, dated 5 JAN 1885, he states: "I was in the 4th Michigan Cavalry and lost a limb by gunshot wound at the battle of Lattimers Mills, GA, 20 JUN 1864." Henry was a son of Daniel G. Sherwood and Philena DEMING. The only thing that is a bit puzzling is that he had obviously already settled in Michigan during or prior to the Rebellion. He joined the Union Army in Michigan, yet, if it is the same Henry Sherwood, is back in Avon, NY, in 1868 as a railroad employee. A possible explanation is that he returned to his old home to convalesce, perhaps physically incapable of homesteading in Michigan due to his injury. His father, Daniel, also a Civil War veteran, may have still been in NY at the time (he enlisted with Co. C of the 6th NY Cavalry Volunteers, so it is possible he was still in Avon in 1868; he eventually moved to Breedsville, Van Buren Co, MI). Res. of Conesus rcvg mail at Conesus Center: Rensselaer Sherwood, farmer, 48 acres (Could this be Micajah Van Rensellaer Sherwood? Micajah was b. Steuben Co, NY; m. Ada KASSICH; son of Rev. James Sherwood and Salina SACKETT, grandson of Stephen Sherwood and second wife Elizabeth EGGLESTON.) Res. of Geneseo rcvg mail at Geneseo: Hiram Sherwood, teamster, Centre St. (This may be Hiram Sherwood, uncle of Clark Sherwood who is mentioned below as a son of Stephen and Sarah CLARK. Hiram was b. 10 JAN 1809, Dutchess Co, NY, son of Stephen Sherwood and second wife Elizabeth EGGLESTON; d. 1886, Geneseo, Livingston Co, NY; m. Harriet Amanda DRINKWATER, 5 APR 1838. This Hiram Sherwood is probably the one enumerated in the 1850 Federal Census in Geneseo.) Res. of Geneseo rcvg mail at South Avon: Clark Sherwood, agent for mowers and reapers; farmer, 100 acres (This is probably the Clark Sherwood, b. Geneseo, Livingston Co, NY, son of Stephen SHERWOOD and Sarah CLARK, grandson of Stephen Sherwood and second wife Elizabeth EGGLESTON; a Clark Sherwood appears in the 1850 Federal Census in Geneseo; and the gravestone of Ema P. Sherwood, in the McCallion Cem., Geneseo, NY, DOD 10 MAR 1856, reads "daughter of Clark and Elvira Sherwood, died aged 11(?) yrs, 6 mo." All are probably one and the same Clark Sherwood.) Res. of Leicester rcvg mail at Moscow: Alfred Sherwood, farmer (This may be the Alfred Sherwood who was b. 1816, son of Joseph Sherwood and Mary McINTYRE, grandson of Stephen Sherwood and first wife Ruth BENEDICT; m. Sarah HALLEY in 1855. Alfred was living in Toronto, ONT, at the time of his marriage. Sarah was from York, Livingston Co, NY.) Res. of Livonia rcvg mail at Hemlock Lake: Orman Sherwood, farmer, 27 acres (I have no idea who this could be.) If anyone has any proof for these identifications, or any further information on these Sherwoods, please let me know. A special thanks to Ed Brill and all the folks over at the Livingston County, NY Genweb site for making the 1868 Business Directory available to all of us in PDF format. It's great to see small counties like this at the cutting edge - making such a prodigious effort to make primary and secondary sources available as more than just index transcriptions. 2. Hi All, Can anyone help identify the following Sherwoods enumerated in the 1850 Federal Census in Orleans County, NY? 1. Town of Carlton Anson N. Sherwood, age 39, b. NY, farmer; Olive, 39, b. NY; Mary, 17, b. NY; Seth, 72, b. CT; Lucretia WARNER, 45, b. NY; Emmet BYERS, 15, b. NY. (Probably Olive is his wife, Mary his daughter, Seth his father, and the two unrelated people are employed in his household). 2. Town of Clarendon Who is the Almira Sherwood, age 20, b. NY, who is in the household of Levi Sherwood, 53, b. CT, farmer? Levi was b. New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT, son of Nathan Sherwood and Lucy HOLLISTER. He d. 7 OCT 1850. Levi m. Patience TRIPP, who apparently had died by 1850, because she does not appear in Levi's household in the 1850 census record that I am citing. The census record goes on to show Rebecca, 33, b. NY (perhaps Levi's second wife); Amanda, 13, b. NY; Caroline, 10, b. NY; Harriet PETERSON, 23, b. NY; Benton SPENCER, 18, b. NY, laborer; and the Almira Sherwood whom I am interested in. 3. Town of Clarendon Thaddeus R. Sherwood, 37, b. NY, mercantile; Clarissa, 24, b. NY (probably his wife); George M., 3, b. NY; Thaddeus M., 10 months, b. NY; Oscar A. HARRIS, 23, b. NY, clerk. 4. Town of Ridgeway James Sherwood, 44, b. NY, painter; Eliza, 44, b. NY; Harriet, 16, b. NY; Cornelia, 12, b. NY; Charles, 10, b. NY; Silas McNEIL, 20, b. NY, painter; John MOLA, 20, b. NY, painter. Many Orleans County Sherwoods are descended from Nathan D. Sherwood (b. 16 JAN 1718, Greens Farms, CT; d. 17 FEB 1823, Maple Ridge, Orleans Co, NY) and his two wives: 1st, Phebe ROBERTS and 2nd, Joanna NOBLE. So the Sherwoods that I have listed are possibly also descended from Nathan D. 1. [SHERWOOD] Daniel SHERWOOD
    2. Hello List: Is there anyone on the list that could help me with "my" Daniel. He is, so far, a brick wall for me. I recently received the death certificates of his two son's. They state he was born in Vermont which changes my whole focus. Some, oral, family history had led me to believe he was from Connecticut which is where I had been concentrating my research. Who were his parent's? Did he have any brother's and/or sister's? The biggest problem seems to be the small pool of male descendants. Of his two son's, one had no children (an adopted daughter), the other had one son. That son had one son (an only child). That only child had one son. Get the picture? That last son (my father), however, must have thought the family name was in danger of dying out. He had six son's. I have Daniel's year of birth as 1775. He then is "lost" until he appears, in 1819, in the village of Wayne, in what is now Schuyler Co. (then Steuben Co) He was the first minister of the Tyrone Baptist Church there. I understand he was a clergyman, so that seems to fit. I wonder where he was he for + / - 44 years. However, I do have some clue's from those missing years that, at this point, have turned up very little. 1. He married one Jane Chase about 1820. It was her second marriage and it appears that in addition to the three they had, he raised her three children by the previous marriage. I do not know if he adopted her three. She was born, in 1790, in Saratoga, Albany Co, NY. I think she married her first husband, Benjamin Smith, there and he died there. She could have married Daniel there as well.

    3. Hi Sue, I too am a Sherwood descendant: Thomas the immigrant, through Stephen , through Jonathan. I have Joseph listed as born in 1666 and Nathaniel in 1672 with three more births in between. Where would you be slipping Elizabeth in? There are four years between Nathaniel and Jonathen according to my records. Elizabeth could certainly "slip in" there. I haven't looked at the LDS records, so I can't really comment on them. Being both a Hoyt and Sherwood descendant I have been trying to piece family info together on these lines. I do have the Elizabeth Sherwood/Purdy and John Hoyt mentioned in my file and it would appear that there is room in the family for an Elizabeth Sherwood to slip in between Joseph and Nathaniel Sherwood, children of Stephen Sr. and Rebecca Turney, according to the LDS site. 1. [SHERWOOD] Sherwood-Hoyt Connection, Rye NY, early 1700's
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Sherwood, Hoyt/Haight, Brundish, Nelson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JFHBAEB/974 Message Board Post: My ancestor John Hoyt (1664-1726), son of John Hoyt and Mary Brundish, was married to Elizabeth, as named in his will dated 10 Feb. 1722/23. John Hoyt lived in Rye, New York, for most of his life. Many sources give Elizabeth's surname as Sherwood, including "The Journal of the Rev. Silas Constant" by Emily Warren Roebling (1903). Other sources give her maiden name as Purdy, although a serious researcher of the Purdy name does not believe that she was a Purdy--the Daniel who is supposed to be her father died very young, and no children are shown for him. My main reason for believing that my Elizabeth is a Sherwood is that in Stephen Sherwood Jr's will, dated 11 August, 1711, Rye NY, he names his *brother-in-law* John Hoit as his executor. It seems to me that there would be three ways that one man (John) could be a brother-in-law to another (Stephen): 1) John would be the brother of Stephen's wife, Mary. Indeed, many sources give Mary's surname as Hoit. John Hoit/Hoyt DID have a sister Mary, but it is well documented that this Mary Hoyt married Hachaliah Brown. In her father's will she is spoken of as "Mary Brown(e)". So unless there is another set of Hoyt siblings named John and Mary (not entirely impossible, I grant), I think that Stephen's wife Mary was not a sister to my John Hoyt. 2) Stephen's wife Mary and John's wife Elizabeth might be sisters, maiden names unknown. This is a distinct possibility, although no name seems to surface for this. Again, the Purdy name suggests itself but there is no family shown in the Purdy line at the appropriate time which shows sisters Mary and Elizabeth, husbands unknown. 3) Stephen's sister Elizabeth married John Hoyt. This seems very reasonable--the main stumbling block seems to be that there is no record of Stephen's father, Stephen Sr. having a daughter named Elizabeth! This is not entirely unheard of in, say, a disposition of the estate if the wife is married and well-established in a home of her own. I would be very interested in discussing this issue with Sherwod family researchers who are far better versed in the family's history than I am. If this hypothesis is correct, the line would go: Thomas the immigrant>Stephen, Sr.>Elizabeth.
