The 1840 Census of Pensioners, Revolutionary and Military Services can be found at the website shown below. Although there may not be any individual pertaining to this surname list on the 1840 Census of Pensioners, other surnames may be of interest to researchers. The 1840 Census of Pensioners, Revolutionary and Military Services was originally compiled by the federal government from the 1840 U.S. Federal Census, which required enumerators (census takers) to list the names and ages of Revolutionary War and other federal military service pensioners in households. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/colonial/census/1840/index.html Happy Huntin' Jim Young

Hi, There was a Sherwood family in the Yonkers area that may have been related to your John Sherwood: 1. Thomas Sherwood, b. c1716, Yonkers, NY; tenant farmer, constable, and tax assessor. In 1740 he built the "Sherwood House" at 340 Tuckahoe Rd., Yonkers, which is now an historic site, open to the public from May to October. He built the house on land leased from Frederick Philipse (a Loyalist who was forced to flee the area). Thomas' son Stephen bought the house and land in 1785 from the Commisioners of Forfeiture, who confiscated and sold the Loyalists' land. Thomas resided in Yonkers, NY, across the street from his brother, Isaac. His son, Stephen, owned this land in 1785. He was elected constable and collector of Yonkers in 1756. Letters of administration on his estate were granted 25 JUL 1791 to his son Jeremiah and Jabez FOWLER, perhaps a son-in-law. 2. Isaac Sherwood, b. c1712, Yonkers, NY. Brother of Thomas, above. He lived on Tuckahoe Rd between Grassy Sprain Rd and Mile Square Rd. He died before 1785. He had sons: Jeremiah, b. c1735; John, b. c1737; Jonathan, b. c1740; Thomas, b. c1748. 3. Jeremiah (son of Isaac, above) m. Abigail BISHOP, dau. of Gershom. Jeremiah was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In 1785, his widow bought from the Commissioners of Forfeitures a farm of 125 acres between the Bronx River and Scarsdale Rd in Crestwood, supposedly the leasehold of her deceased husband. The land was described as formerly held by Aaron SHERWOOD, poss a son of Jeremiah. A letter from his grandson, John Robert Sherwood to William Lounsbury Sherwood, dated 12/28/1886, says that Jeremiah d. during the Revolutionary War (Sherwood collection, NYPL main branch, 5th Ave and 42nd St, NYC, reel #1). Jeremiah and Abigail had ch: Moses, b. 11 JUL 1761; Elizabeth "Eliza", b. 17 JUL 1762; Jonathan, b. 3 SEP 1767; Bishop, b. 9 MAR 1769. 4. John (son of Isaac, above), b. c1737, Yonkers, NY. Occupation = Weaver. Enlisted in Capt. FOWLER's company of militia out of Capt. John UNDERHILL's company, 20 APR 1757/8, aged 20. Either he or 2nd wife died 1804. Almost certainly the John who appears in the 1790 Census of Yonkerstown, NY, as head of household of 2 males aged 16 or over, 2 males under 16, and 5 females. John m. 1) Mary ____, and had ch: Phebe b. 1766, and Jonathan, b. 1771, supposedly died young. John m. 2) Elizabeth CRAWFORD, and had ch: Elizabeth, Rachel, Isaac b. 1778, Jacob b. c1780, Hester and Martha. 5. Stephen (son of Thomas, above), b. 1740, Yonkers, NY. He moved to Pittstown, Renssselaer Co, NY, by around 1787; wife Nancy, ch: Thomas, Samuel, Stephen, Betsey, Patty and Rachel. 6. Jeremiah (son of Thomas, above), b. c1745, Yonkers, NY. He lived in Yonkers. He m. Ann SMITH, dau. of Caleb. Ch: Caleb, b. 19 JUN 1770; Jeremiah; Thomas; John, b. 14 OCT 1782. Hi Judith, I obtained much of this information from secondary sources, so I can't vouch for its accuracy. However, it will probably be worthwhile to take a look at the Orcutt, Jacobus, and the Compendium of American Genealogy citations that I have given below, because each of them typically cite the primary sources: Lemuel Sherwood (son of Matthew and Mary FITCH), b. c1687; church deacon, farmer; d. 2 SEP 1732, Stratfield (part of present-day Bridgeport), Fairfield Co, CT (Orcutt's "History of Stratford", p. 1292). He was chosen to be Deacon of the Stratfield Church in 1722 and served until his death. He was also Town Clerk of Fairfield for many years. "The Wheeler Genealogy..." by Raymond David Wheeler, identifies Lemuel's first wife as Ann WHEELER, dau. of Sgt. John Wheeler and 2nd wife, Elizabeth ROWLAND. She was b. 1684; Lemuel and Ann had a son, Nathan, b. 1703 (William Lounsbury Sherwood collection, NYPL, reel #1, quoting from a journal kept by Nathan's grandson, Ebenezer Knapp Sherwood). Lemuel m. 2) Experience WHEELER, on 17 MAY 1711 (however, Orcutt gives the DOM as 9 MAY 1712, which would appear to contradict Orcutt's DOB for their first son, Matthew. Or maybe I just recorded the dates wrong). She was a dau. of Isaac Wheeler and Martha PARK. Experience b. c1685; d. 27 AUG 1721 (Orcutt's "History of Stratford", p. 1293). Children of Lemuel and Experience: 1. Matthew, b. 12 APR 1712 (Orcutt, p. 1293; Fairfield Historical Society, Sherwood Family Papers (1654-1912) Box V, Folder B, William Lounsbury Sherwood letterbook, p. 46, WLS letter to Lionel Sherwood (great-grandson of Deacon Lemuel Sherwood). 2. Hannah, b. 11 DEC 1713 (Orcutt, p. 1293; ibid WLS letter to Lionel Sherwood). 3. Andrew, b. 1715, bapt. 24 APR 1715 (Orcutt, p. 1293; ibid WLS letter to Lionel Sherwood). 4. Anne, b. 22 AUG 1716 (Orcutt, p. 1293; ibid WLS letter to Lionel Sherwood), m. John BROOKS. 5. Abiah, b. 26 MAR 1718 (Orcutt, p. 1293; ibid WLS letter to Lionel Sherwood), m. David MIDDLEBROOK. 6. Mehitable, b. 21 FEB 1719 (Orcutt, p. 1293; ibid WLS letter to Lionel Sherwood), m. Elnathan HUBBELL Lemuel m. 3) Joanna PHIPPEN (PHIPPENNY), on 8 MAR 1722; she d. 9 MAY 1727 (Orcutt, p. 1293; "Sherwood Family Group Sheets: Descendants to the 8th Generation of Thomas Sherwood of Fairfield (1586-1655) and Thomas Sherwood of Stratford" compiled by Donald F. Notley, 5311 S. Delaware Ave., Tulsa, OK, 13 DEC 1985.) Children: Samuel. Jacobus' "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield," Vol. 2, p. 836, says that this Samuel was b. 1731, d. 1788, and sold his Fairfield property in 1759, and later resided in Bennington, VT. But that seems to contradict the DOM of Lemuel and his fourth wife, Ann SILLIMAN. It's possible that Lemuel had two sons named Samuel, one by his 3rd wife, one by his 4th. Lemuel m. 4) Ann SILLIMAN, on 7 JUN 1728 (Orcutt, p. 1293 gives the date as 27 JUN 1728). She was a dau. of Robert SILLIMAN and Sarah HULL. (See the Silliman genealogy in Schenck's "History of Fairfield," Vol. 1, p. 407). Their children: 1. Experience, b. 12 APR 1729 (Orcutt, p. 1293; ibid Notley) 2. Hannah, bapt. 21 FEB 1733; d. 26 FEB 1733 (Orcutt, p. 1293; ibid Notley) 3. Samuel, b. 9 JUL 1731, Stratfield, CT; Quartermaster in the Revolutionary War; m. Ruth Sherwood, dau. of Capt. John Sherwood and Mary W. WALKER; d. 9 FEB 1788, Bennington, VT; bur. Old Bennington, VT. (Orcutt, p. 1293; Jacobus, Vol. 2, p. 836; Compendium of American Genealogy, Vol. 4, p. 150; ibid WLS letter to Lionel Sherwood) Kind Regards, Geoff Geoffrey Sherwood Towaco, NJ, USA demidave@juno.com On Mon, 25 Feb 2002 16:50:55 -0500 Judith MacKinnon <judimac@cfl.rr.com> writes: > Hi I am new to the list.
