    1. [SHERWOOD] Elmore Sherwood
    2. On looking at my last communication, decided I should give few more details. Elmore or Isaac was in Fulton Co., Illinois in 1830 census. He married Margaret Totten there, then after her death he married Dorcas Sharp Crawford (widow). When he and Margaret were married there were several children - either his or hers. I have found no death record of Elmore - was in 1860 census and not 1870, but clerk of county could find no record there in Fulton Co of his death. Pat

Surnames: Sherwood, Truesdale, Merritt, Birdsall, McCann Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JFHBAEB/1001 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on my grandmother-in-law Ada Mae Sherwood. Have found her on 1920 census in Danbury, Fairfield Co. and know she was born c. 1890 in CT. 1) I am trying to locate her on the 1900 census - guessing in the Danbury area - can anyone help? Her mother was Genevieve (Jenny), maiden name Merritt, originally from Brewster NY, who would have been about 34 in 1900. I am not sure of Ada's father's name - someone once said 'Frank', nor do I know if he was still Jenny's husband in 1900 (she married William Birdsall, but that was sometime later, and had been previously married to an unknown McCann.) 2) I am trying to locate any 'real' data on the marriage of Ada Sherwood to William Truesdale. I suspect the marriage occurred in or near Danbury, around 1910 or 1911, based on childrens ages and birthplaces. Thank you.

Surnames: Hughlett, Pollard, Fowler, Wilson, Sherwwod, Carns Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JFHBAEB/999 Message Board Post: Looking for information concerning Chatham Hughlett and Caroline Pollard, who were married in 1826 in Baltimore, MD. Both were probably born in Virginia. They were listed in the 1830 Census in the Fifth Ward of the City of Baltimore, as being between 20 and 30 years old and having a daughter under five years old. They had at least two more children; in additioned to the unknown oldest girl, there was Annie, born in 1834 or 1835, and James W., born August 18, 1844. I suspect that Robert E. Hughlett, born about 1840, was their child also. James' guardian Rachel Wilson, widow of Lt. Col. John Wilson, states in an affadavit in 1879 that James was orphaned as a small boy. Annie was married in 1853 to Isaac Fowler, and was probably raised in the household of Robert Sherwood, who was a shopkeeper on E. Baltimore street in 1850, and was married to Margaret Carns. A Robert E. Hughlett served in Company F of the 4th MD in the Civil War (James was in Co. G). James named one of his sons Robert E. Any information on this family would be appreciated. GWW

I would love to hear from any one connected to this family who may be able to assist me sorting out the siblings of the earlier generations and am happy to share any information I have. 1. [SHERWOOD] SHERWOOD, Ebenezer, Cornwall CT, d. 1785
    2. Dear Sherwood researchers, I have just received some very interesting and helpful information from a Sherwood cousin, who is descended from another child of my 3rd Great Grandparents, Ebenezer Sherwood and Hannah Bradford, and would like to pass it along for any discussion. I would like to ask if anyone can identify the Ebenezer Sherwood, Fairfield CT named below. Could he be my Ebenezer Sherwood who married Hannah Bradford? Since my Ebenezer died in 1785, could this be the reason why Hannah and some of the children moved to Ohio? A looming question.... My Ebenezer Sherwood was b. 10 Apr 1737 Fairfield, CT, but deceased in Cornwall CT. The information received is as follows: "I recently came across another book that may be of interest to you, "Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants Awarded by State Governments" by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck. Copyright 1996 and published by Genealogical Publishing Company. If you want, I can send you a hard copy of this reference. The Introductions states a land bounty is a grant of land from a government as a reward to repay citizens for the risks and hardships they endured in the service of their country, usually in a military related capacity. The Introduction also states that while Connecticut did not award any bounty lands to its military personnel, it did convey title to its western lands to its citizens for Revolutionary War damages. Connecticut compensated its citizenry with lands in Ohio if their homes, outbuildings, and businesses were destroyed by the British. British forces, having retaken New York City, operated out of the harbor on expeditions along the New England coast to destroy rebel stores and shipping. Under cover of darkness they could secretly arrive, inflict damage, and retreat before meeting any effective resistance. From the relative safety of their ships off shore, the British assisted by Benedict Arnold, laid waste many of the towns in Connecticut. The nine towns so scorched during the war were Danbury in 1777, East Haven in 1779, Fairfield in 1779, Greenwich and Groton in 1781, New Haven in 1779, New London in 1781, Norwalk in 1779, and Ridgefield. The Connecticut entries consist of the name of the warrantee, the state, the designation of suffer rather than a rank, the town of residence, and the amount of loss. The sum appearing for an individual from the town of Ridgefield reflects the balance after deductions were made for sums advanced by grants of the general assembly. Page 477 of this book includes the following two entries: Sherwood, Ebenezer. Conn. Sufferer. Fairfield. 2.0.0. Sherwood, Ebenezer. Conn. Sufferer. Ridgefield. 5.13.4 The Introduction further states that with the exception of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the other states permitted qualified veterans and/or their dependents to receive bounty lands from both the federal and the respective state governments." Looking forward to any amplifying information. Thanks! Jeannie Winter

Emma and Don would come to my folks and grab any kid who wasn't in school (usually me) and I would stay with them for weeks at a time and, of course, we would go visiting. That's how I have all sorts of little notes from talking with those folks. Now I just have to take the time to sort them all out. I don't have very much information about Walter Leroy, but will e-mail you the stuff I have. Thank you so much for your response. Sue

The book I'd like to find is 'History of the War of 1812,' specifically (and only) the copy that apparently Rebecca (Garner) Sherwood was writing info in. That's where Martin V.B. said his birthdate was written when he was applying for his Civil War pension.
