    2. Robert Snyder
    3. Hi all, I've been trying, for some years, to trace the family of David Snider, b. ca. 1837 in Leeds, the son of William and Nancy (Covell) Snider. He m. Elisa Sherwood, b. ca 1842 in the Town of Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY, the daughter of Ichabod S. and Sophia. I've reconstructed the family of Ichabod from various census and children's death records, and I'd like to compare notes with anyone else who's working on this line. Here's Ichabod: Ichabod S. Sherwood, b. ca 1807 in the USA Sophia (Seriah?) (Lothia), b. ca 1817 in the USA. - I have all three given names in various records, but Lothia is clear on the death record of her son, Ruben. Press? Bess? F b. ca 1833 Ruben M b. 1836, d. 14 Apr 1908 at Leroy, Osceola County, MI Alexander M b. Jun 1839; m. 27 Jan 1860 at S. Most of the approximated dates are extrapolated from the 1851 census. The others are from marriage and death records I've found. I'm especially interested in knowing what happened to David and Elisa, as it is the Snider family I'm really researching. Can anyone help? --- Robert Snyder --- rcsnyder2@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: The #1 provider of the Real Internet.

    3. Geoff, A few tidbits from "Three Centuries of the Keator Family in America" by Alfred Decker Keator (New York: American Historical Co., 1955): p.24 GIDEON KEATOR (CATOR), b Marbletown, bpt. Jan., 1750/51; d. probably ca. 1810 in New York, as the 1811 New York City Directory lists his wife, Sarah, as "widow." Gideon was a rope maker by vocation, associated wih his brothers-in-law, William and Moses Sherwood in the famous rope-walk on First Street near First Avenue, New York, which served so well the infant U.S. Navy. Gideon m. ca. 1778, SARAH SHERWOOD, b. ca. 1750. p.41 RACHEL KEATOR, bpt. 6 Mar. 1764, d. 22 July 1817; m. WILLIAM SHERWOOD, d. 25 July 1793, Augusta, Ga. Listed as "ropemaker, late of New York City" no doubt associated with his brother, Moses and GIDEON KEATOR. child: Moses, b. 17 Sep., bapt. 15 Nov. 1786. [note: yes, Augusta, Georgia] p.69 MOSES SHERWOOD, b. 17 Sep. 1786. Sharpshooter in War of 1812. Credited with the slaying of General Isaac Brock in the Battle of Queenston; m. SARAH KEATOR, b. 22 July 1786, Marbletown. The KEATOR book says that the above Gideon KEATOR had a brother named John T. KEATOR (b.1737, d.1825 Roxbury, NY)--both being sons of Thomas KEATOR. John T. KEATOR was the father of Rachel KEATOR, wife of William SHERWOOD. So, according to Mr. KEATOR's book, William SHERWOOD had a brother Moses and a sister Sarah (as well as a son Moses). Also, William's son Moses' wife Sarah KEATOR was the daughter of John C. KEATOR (b.1756, d.1847 Roxbury, NY) who was the son of Cornielius KEATOR who was a brother of the above mentioned Gideon and John T. The New York City directories do list a William SHERWOOD as a ropemaker in the early 1790's as well as a Moses SHERWOOD--but as a grocer (in 1790 they're both listed at the address "3 Catherine Steet"). I think the reference to the SHERWOOD family of Roxbury, NY being German probably refers (as you theorize) to the maternal line, which is embedded with Dutch of the Holland variety (Dutch, of course, is a word which in the context of Pennsylvania is a corruption of Deutsch, or German--maybe the author of the Delaware Co. book got confused--its hard to tell). Another possibilty (albeit, I think, improbale regarding the Roxbury SHERWOOD's) is that SHERWOOD is an anglicization of a German surname. "Wald" is a common German surname suffix meaning woods or forest. A German word for shear is Schere. There is a German surname Scherwald which could be translated as Shearwood and then phonectically morphed into SHERWOOD (there are probably other German surnames that could be rendered SHERWOOD in English). 1. [SHERWOOD] Search Engine Tips for Finding Your Sherwoods
    2. Dear Sherwoods and Kin, Search engines are our online super-librarian, and it helps to know how to unleash their amazing search capabilities. I thought I'd pass on a few tips on how to increase the likelihood of finding your Sherwood ancestors through the use of search engines. Some of this information will be old hat to many of you, but some of you may find it useful. 1. One of the easiest means to narrow down your search and eliminate a lot of search engine "noise" (useless links) is to enclose your search phrase in double-quotes. For example, if you are searching for Anson Sherwood, type in "Anson Sherwood", with the quotes. This guarantees that you will only get webpages that contain the exact phrase "Anson Sherwood" (minus the quotes, of course; search engines understand that the quotes are not part of the search phrase, but only mean that you want it to find that phrase exactly as it appears inside the quotes). The shortcoming of this search method is that results of your search will not include pages that have, say, "Anson G. Sherwood". But using quotes is still a powerful tool. If you don't use quotes, the search engine will list every page that has both "Anson" and "Sherwood" on the same page, but not necessarily together. For example, you may get a link to a page that has a list of names, like: "Anson Anderson, Mark Murphy, Zedediah Sherwood". The page satisfies your loose search criteria because it contains both "Anson" and "Sherwood." 2. Another powerful search is to enter the name as follows: "Sherwood, Anson" (carefully note the order: surname comma space given name). This is a great search to use because names often appear this way in online census indices and other online records. Search method #1, above, will not capture the webpages that this search will capture. You will be surprised at how many additional pages you will get with this method. You can easily double your results by using both search methods. For example, here are some test cases using methods #1 and #2, using several different search engines: Search Phrase Search Engine Pages Found "Anson Sherwood" www.google.com 15 "Sherwood, Anson" www.google.com 22 "Harold Sherwood" www.google.com 72 "Sherwood, Harold" www.google.com 71 "Anson Sherwood" www.yahoo.com 3 "Sherwood, Anson" www.yahoo.com 8 "Harold Sherwood" www.yahoo.com 27 "Sherwood, Harold" www.yahoo.com 38 "Anson Sherwood" www.altavista.com 8 "Sherwood, Anson" www.altavista.com 6 "Harold Sherwood" www.altavista.com 16 "Sherwood, Harold" www.altavista.com 27 You can see why I am partial to Google. 3. Here's a really neat trick to use when you are searching for someone with a relatively common name, like "Benjamin Sherwood." Google found 225 pages for that name when I searched for it in quotes. I don't want to wade through all of those pages, so suppose I know his spouse's name, or I want to verify that he was married to an "Ann Anderson." If I just type Benjamin Sherwood Ann Anderson without quotes, I get 13,000 pages. Useless. If I type "Benjamin Sherwood" Ann Anderson (Benjamin Sherwood in quotes, no quotes around Ann Anderson), I get 40 pages. Not bad, but there's a better way yet. Type "Benjamin Sherwood" "Ann Anderson" (both names in quotes with a space between). Now I get only 3 pages, but every one of them has exactly the Benjamin Sherwood and wife, Ann Anderson, that I was looking for. 4. You may or may not be able to replicate the three searches above by using Boolean logic, which most if not all search engines understand. That is the straightforward logic which uses operators like "and", "or" and "near" to fine tune your search. They can be useful, but I'm a lazy son of a gun, and I don't want to waste precious seconds going to the search engine's "Advanced Search" page in order to use the Boolean operators. I want to do it all on the main page, quick and easy. If you're willing to experiment a little bit, you may find even better ways to find what you're looking for on the main search page. 5. Recognize the shortcomings of search engines. As far as I know, no internet-wide search engine, like those I've shown above, can index PDF documents. This is an ENORMOUS shortcoming, but fortunately, this shortcoming seems to inexorably, albeit slowly, coming to an end. The greatest obstacle to making genealogical information available online is the time and manpower it takes to transcribe zillions of census records, books, journals, correspondence, and other documents. The only rational approach is to make them available as online graphical images, i.e., scan them and save them online as PDF files or some other graphical image format. Once the techno-gurus figure out how to make these graphical documents searchable by the 800-pound-gorilla search engines, there will be an explosion of genealogical data on the internet. To get a taste of what it's like to be able to search within a scanned document, check out the online "Making of America" project sponsored by Cornell University and the Univ. of Michigan http://moa.umdl.umich.edu/ They have scanned an astounding 8,500 books and 50,000 journal articles. Each scanned image has been enhanced with "Optical Character Recognition" (OCR) to facilitate searching and accessing the texts. I have only scratched the surface of the Cornell site, but because 19th century New York state history is one of its strong suits, there are more Sherwoods in there than you can shake a stick at. Keep in mind that you cannot search these documents from OUTSIDE the Cornell Univ. and Univ. of Michigan websites. That is what I mean when I say that this particular search technology is not currently in use internet-wide. You can only search the OCR-enhanced scanned documents from within the Cornell and UMich sites. That was the last I knew, anyway. If the situation has changed, please let me know. I hope this helps a bit. Kind Regards, Geoff Geoffrey Sherwood Towaco, NJ, USA ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 3. Hello to all, and especially to Geof Sherwood, Your post re the Sherwoods of Roxbury, Delaware Co, NY was most interesting, as usual Geof. I usually save your posts for a period of time to analyze and compare them with other posts. My own special interest is this: My fraternal grandfather was John Sherwood, born 1833 in KY, who never revealed to his 5 children anything of mother, father or siblings other than that his father was born in Germany, and his mother in Pennsylvania. This information actually came only through census records. The German connection eludes me. He (John Sherwood) married Nancy Barker in 1864 in Logan Co, IL, moving to central Texas in abt. 1880 with her and three children. How I'd appreciate any information on John's father (unnamed by the way) or mother. I'm the next-to-last of John and Nancy's grandchildren still living. Regards to all, Lee Sherwood

I enjoy buying lovely old pictures like these in antique shops and locating descendants/family members so that I can re-unite the pictures, for only my costs, with people who will treasure them On the back is “to my uncle: Andrew Sherwood”. The picture was taken by a professional photographer named Le Roy Parkinson Photographer, Cambria, Wis., in approx. 1875-1880 (my estimate). He looks to be about 4 yrs. old, and is posed in the studio, with one hand on his hip and one on a fringed stuffed chair. He is sitting, and wearing a fancy black and white coat with what appear to be knickers. He has blond hair and light eyes. The picture is 4 x 2-½”, and is an original, on heavy card stock, as was typical during that time period. It is in excellent condition. If David Myers is in your family or if you have a Myers or Sherwood family in the area of Columbia Co., WI, please Email me directly at margerice@prodigy.net.

    1. [SHERWOOD] Sherwoods of Roxbury, Delaware Co, NY: German, English, or both?
    2. Dear Sherwoods and Kin, I am having a heckuva time trying to figure out how the Sherwoods of Roxbury, Delaware County, NY, fit into the larger Sherwood family. I have traced these Sherwoods back to a Moses Sherwood of Roxbury, but no farther. He is an intriguing character, born circa 1787, in New York State (In the 1850 Federal Census, Roxbury, NY, he is age "63", farmer, with 500 acres of land, nativity NY). According to the 12th Section of the "Biographical Review - 1895: The Leading Citizens of Delaware County, NY", Biographical Review Publishing Company, Boston, 1895: The Sherwood family of Roxbury "is of German ancestry, the father of James Sherwood being Moses Sherwood, a pioneer of Roxbury, and a sharpshooter in the War of 1812. It has always been said that he was the man who killed General Brock (GS: British General Isaac Brock), and his own explanation of the affair was, "I don't know as I killed him, but I took good aim and saw him fall." Moses Sherwood settled in Roxbury at the beginning of this century, his first habitation being a log cabin with a blanket for a door. The wolves and other wild animals howled about the house at night, and many a time while her husband was at war, the wife of this sturdy pioneer was obliged to lift her oldest boy to the horse's back that he might go to the mill. He (Moses) lived to be over ninety years of age, active and rugged to the end, being able to read without glasses. His wife, Sarah Cator Sherwood (GS: Sarah's maiden name was KEATOR, but is often spelled "CATOR" in documents and census records which mention her), was born in Roxbury. Their son, James, the father of Mrs. Jenkins, was a successful farmer of Roxbury, following that occupation throughout his life. His children were: George, Mary, Elizabeth, James, Sarah, Eleanor, Chloe, Peter and Melissa. He (James) died at Roxbury in 1894, at the age of eighty-four years, having been for many years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church." Moses' wife, Sarah "Sally" KEATOR was born in Roxbury, c1789 (age "66" in the 1855 Census, Roxbury, NY), dau. of John C. Keator and Rebecka. It is said that John Keator and his brother, Joseph, were the first settlers of Roxbury, in 1794. Children of Moses and Sarah: 1. James, b. 1 NOV 1809, d. 12 FEB 1894; lifelong farmer in Roxbury, NY. Married Marilda Chloe STEWARD (var. sp. STEWART.) His wife's name appears variously as "Marilda", "Chloe", "Marilda C.", and even "Klorinda." She was born 13 AUG 1816. Both James and Marilda are buried at the Vega Old School Baptist Cemetery, Roxbury, NY. 2. Moses, Jr., b. c1819 (age "36" in the 1855 Census, Roxbury, NY) 3. Joel, b. c1827 (age "23" in the 1850 Federal Census, Roxbury, NY) 4. Irena, b. c1831 (age "24" in the 1855 Census, Roxbury, NY); it is possible that she is the wife of Moses, Jr., and not a dau. of Moses and Sarah. There is reason to believe that Moses, Sr., is a son of William Sherwood (d. 1793) and Rachel KEATOR (b. 6 MAR 1764). William died in 1793. His will mentions his children, Moses and Mary. William had married a second time, to a woman named "Charity" of unknown surname. The will of a John KEATOR of Roxbury, dated 5 JUL 1824, probated 11 MAY 1826, mentions a grandson named Moses Sherwood (which could very well be Moses, Sr.), and a granddaughter named Polly Inman. (Book A, p. 70, Abstracts of Delaware County, NY, Wills). William Sherwood and Rachel Keator had a daughter, Polly (Mary), who married Isaac INMAN, Jr. This is pretty compelling evidence that William is Moses, Sr's father. Polly was born 17 AUG 1789, in NY State (a diary entry of her son, John M. Inman, on 17 AUG 1869, says "Mother is 80 years old this day.") Polly died 4 OCT 1870 (from the same diary: "Mother died this morning at twenty minutes past three in the morning in the 82d year of her age.") Polly (Sherwood) Inman is buried in the old Eden Cemetery, Eden Twp., Benton Co, Iowa. This all leads me to several questions: 1. Who are William and Moses Sherwood and where are they from? Are they father and son? 2. Why would a Delaware county historian refer to the Roxbury Sherwoods as "German"? There are several possibilities: a) A paternal ancestor was a German boy adopted by a Sherwood family, b) The Roxbury Sherwoods considered themselves German based on maternal lines (the Keators?), c) The historian mistakenly calls them "German" when it is only the maternal line that is German, d) Scot, Irish, English or Welsh Sherwoods emigrated at one time to Holland or Germany, and some time later to America. Any other theories? Does anyone know anything at all about these Sherwoods? I have plenty more information about their descendants, if anyone is interested. Oddly enough, there were some Canadian Sherwoods in Ontario who, in 19th century censuses, identified themselves as German. I'll have to see if there is any connection between them and Roxbury Sherwoods. My hunch is the Roxbury Sherwoods originally came from the Mount Pleasant / Phillips Manor, NY, area. Many Philipsburgh Sherwoods inter-married with Germans and Dutch, so if an adoption occurred, that is the most likely place. Furthermore, there were several "Moses Sherwoods" in that area. Some of the families that Sherwoods intermarried with: ROSENCRANZ, AERTSE, YOUNGS, JACOCKS, ORSER, VAN TASSEL. Best Wishes to all of our Cousins to the North, Down Under, and Across the Pond, and Happy Birthday, America. 3. Geoff: Just a thought that might help in your search, try looking at a book "The McDonald County, MO Saga", Volumn I, Cemeteries and Pioneer Families. There were several Sherwood families living in that county and it borders on Newton County. Newton County is where the cemetery was located that I emailed about earlier. 2. Norma, Thank you for posting the Sherwood information from the Seneca, MO, burial plot. That was very kind of you. I am wondering if these Sherwoods may be descended from Henry Sherwood, b. 6 APR 1815, Middlebury, VT, son of Josiah Sherwood, a veteran of the War of 1812, and Phila T. FULLER. Henry was a resident of Seneca, Newton Co, MO, in 1870 - for how long, I don't know. My source is a copy of a letter that he wrote to his brother, Alonzo, on 28 APR 1870 (special thanks to John Stripling for generously sending me copies of a number of wonderful letters to and from Alonzo Sherwood of Clarke Co, AL, and subsequently, Henderson, TN. If anyone has any information connecting Henry with the Sherwoods buried in the family plot that Norma has described, please post to the Sherwood list. Thank you! 1. [SHERWOOD] ADMIN: List and Boards Will be Down Awhile
    2. Jim Young
    3. List Subscribers, Please note that the RootsWeb Discussion Lists, RootsWeb Websites and Ancestry Message Boards will be inaccessible while their servers are being upgraded. Full details from RootsWeb Staff are provided below. I'll attempt to answer any further questions which are not answered by the HelpDesk. Happy Huntin' Jim Young ------------------- Beginning Monday, 10 June 2002, RootsWeb will begin the complex and time-consuming process of upgrading our servers to new hardware. o What does this mean for you? Well, it means some servers will be unavailable during this time unavailable and we are asking for your patience. For up-to-date information about the different resources, you can visit http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ as the move progresses. o List Administrators: When the time comes to move list servers, we will be halting operation on the machine to complete the move. We expect to have the machines down the least amount of time possible. No mail will be sent from or posted to your mailing lists. We do not expect to lose any messages. o Board Administrators: Nothing, unless your board happens to be gatewayed to a mailing list then the information for list administrators apply. o Web Pages: FTP will be down so that changes can't be made to pages until everything is working correctly on the new servers. There will be a short time that the pages will not be available as the transfer takes place. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we go through a few "growing pains."
