    1. [SHERWOOD] John Sherwood, b. c1792, resident of Nunda, Livingston Co, NY,
    2. Hi Kathy, Your Sherwood line just became very intriguing to me. And for a very personal reason. You may be the closest Sherwood relative (or descendant of Sherwoods) that I have ever encountered, and, more importantly, could ever encounter. Your Sherwood line had flummoxed me in the past. I had never been able to connect your Isaac, or others in your line, with any Sherwoods known to me. Until today - when you mentioned Nunda, NY. Nunda is not a teeming metropolis. It has a present-day population of not much more than 1,400 if you include the 'possums and woodchucks. I won't hazard a guess what the population was back in the 1820s, but I'm sure it was small enough that it would be stretching the odds for two "unrelated" (in the immediate sense) Sherwood families to have been there at that early date. Not impossible, but defiant of the odds. My Sherwoods - the family of my G4grandfather, Zadoc Sherwood - happened to be in Nunda in 1820, according to the Federal Census for that year. Zadoc (also spelled "Zadock") is also buried there, in the Oakwood Cemetery. According to the "Centennial History of Nunda, N.Y.: 1808-1908" edited by H. Wells Hand, Rochester Herald Press, 1908, Zadoc lived to be 99 years and 9 months old, when he broke his hip and refused to eat, saying he had lived long enough. The book contains a photo (on p. 223) of one of Zadoc's sons, Granville Sherwood (the first in my family to bear the name. My son, named for my father, David, has Granville as his middle name. From the time of the first Granville (son of Zadoc), b. c1785, until today, a male has borne the name "Granville" as the first or middle name in every generation of my Sherwood family except for my father's. That first Granville Hudson Sherwood, like his father, was very long-lived; he died at age 95. Zadoc had another son, John, which I now feel is probably the father of your Isaac Sherwood. He is most likely the John Sherwood who appears in the 1820 and 1850 (and intervening?) Federal Censuses in Nunda, NY. The John who was a son of Zadoc was born c1791, which jibes with the age "58" that you show for his enumeration in the 1850 Federal Census of Nunda. John died 11 NOV 1863 and, like Zadoc, is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Nunda. Another compelling reason for believing that your John and mine are one and the same is that John, son of Zadoc, married Rachel JONES. And your John was married to a "Rachel." I would be willing to bet that the middle initial of "John J. Sherwood" stands for "Jones". On page 222 of the Nunda Centennial book, it says that John lived on State Street in Nunda Village, and that he married Rachel JONES ("Milliner"), who is also buried in Nunda. The reason I say you may be the closest Sherwood relative that I have is because my Sherwood line is just the slimmest line you could imagine. My two brothers and our sons are the only living male Sherwood descendants of my G3grandfather, Richard Reuben Sherwood (brother to your John, if your John is in fact a son of Zadoc). Reuben (he went by his middle name) had four sons of which only one, David Burton (my G2grandfather) left male progeny. David Burton had one son, Granville Hudson Sherwood III, Bishop of the Springfield, Illinois, Episcopal church. Granville III had one child, my grandfather, Granville Hudson Sherwood IV. And Granville IV had two sons, only one of which - my father, David Scott Sherwood - had male progeny. So any present-day Sherwood descendants of Reuben's siblings - Granville Hudson II, John, Nathan and Harry - would be my closest living Sherwood relatives. It would be very exciting to me if it turns out that your John really is a brother of my G3grandfather, Reuben. Can you tell me some more about your Sherwoods and how you are descended from them? I am particularly interested in all that you know about John the elder, Isaac and John J. 3. I'm sorry - I should have prefaced the post below, with the fact that I did hear back from a few list members who had information on the children, a while back. Their replies were much appreciated. What I am hoping someone can provide, is information on Abby's son James Harvey, past his birth, such as where he lived, who he married, names of his children, etc. Unfortunately, my Harvey Brundage died in 1875, which was prior to Brooklyn asking for parents names on death certificates. Although I have his and Maria Ann Smith's descendents well documented after a 30 year search, I still am clueless as to his parents. I have exhausted the census records, and have no idea what religion they were, so have not been able to locate any marriage records. Thanks again. 1. [SHERWOOD] Isaac Sherwood
    2. Does anyone know of a John Sherwood, age 58 in 1850, and his wife Rachel Sherwood, age 59 in 1850, living in Nunda, Livingston Co., New York? I think this is my Isaac's father. My Isaac Sherwood, born 1816. The 1860 census in the same city and county shows a John J. age 23 living with John and Rachel...this looks like Isaac's son, my gggrandfather, because it says that he is a student., and it looks like at a Seminary...which he did attend a seminary. Any leads? Kathy

And, some other info revealed that my Isacc might have been born in Penn. Does this mean anything to anyone? Kathy

    2. Hello everyone...I am still looking for the following Sherwood connection; Isacc J. Sherwood born May 16, 1816 married Chloe Mutchler, who was born Oct 28, 1815. They lived in New York somewhere...they had 4 boys...John J. Sherwood, born Nov 22, 1837 in West Sparta, NY. John married Eliza Munshaw, who was from Canada. They moved to Saginaw, Mich after the civil war. John is my mom's great grandfather. John had 3 brothers; Ichs Sherwood, born Aug. 10, 1843, Randolph M. Sherwood, born July 4, 1844, and then Henry M. Sherwood, born June 18, 1850. This is my dilemna.....my mom is a Sherwood and she is the last relative of her family, that we know about. Her mother was an only child and so was her grandmother (Maud Sherwood, daughter of John and Eliza). I am trying to find some other family members, especially from the brothers. My mom is 82 years old and has cancer and would really like to know about her family and we just found out this information about a year ago. If anyone had any leads, please let me know! Kathy Oborn

    1. [SHERWOOD] Re: Isaac Sherwood b. NY or CT, wife Hannah, resided in PA 1827
    2. Hi Kay, In all likelihood, the people you are asking about are Isaac Sherwood, b. 3 SEP 1801, in New Jersey; d. 12 JAN 1886, New Milford, Susquehanna Co, PA; and his wife, Hannah ADAMS (or poss. ADAM), b. 19 JUL 1802, New Jersey; d. 12 APR 1877, New Milford, Susquehanna Co, PA. Isaac and Hannah were married 16 AUG 1823, in Wantage Twp., Sussex Co, NJ. In late 1829, or 1830, Isaac moved his family from New Jersey to Blakely Twp, Luzerne Co, PA, where they appear in the 1830 Federal Census. They lived in that area through the 1840 census until sometime prior to 1847 when they were listed on the tax rolls of New Milford Twp in Susquehanna Co, PA. They appear in the 1850 Census in New Milford, Susquehanna Co, PA. Isaac and Hannah had twelve children, and farmed in the New Milford area for the balance of their lives. In his will he made bequeaths to those children still living at the time the will was drawn (1879), and to the heirs of his son Lewis, who had died during the Civil War, in Murfreesboro, TN. The will included Hilah and Celia, both of whom died young. It included his son Samuel who had died in Iowa in 1884. Either Isaac did not know of his son's death, or the will simply had not been changed, perhaps with the intention that Samuel's heirs would receive the allotted sum. The youngest son, Albert, was designated as executor and was left the balance of the property. This probably included the farmstead stated to be 180 acres in the 1850 Federal Census. I have sometimes wondered if Isaac was a son of Samuel SHERRERED or SHERRERD of Sussex Co, NJ. (perhaps the names are misspelled in Sussex County records). I have additional information on the children and later descendants of Isaac and Hannah, if you need it. As far as I know, no one has yet been able to trace this Sherwood line back beyond Isaac. 2. Thank you, Geoff, for sharing this information.........20 or more years ago (when I thought a "web" was spun by a spider) we went to NY state for a vacation and to search for the parents of my husbands GreatGreat Grandfather, Adaiah Sherwood, in Westchester County. (the 1850 Virginia census listed him as 83 yrs old-born in NY) We found the "Sherwood Inn" listed in the AAA book and decided to make a side trip over to Skaneateles. We had a delightful three days there staying at the Sherwood Inn. We did not stay in room 30 with the canopy but had a lovely room on the front of the building overlooking one of the finger lakes! Thanks for the "web" sites and for the memories! 1. [SHERWOOD] You turned dad over in his grave (BILL)
    2. Now for a Rabi William Sherwood Bishop of Meath, d. at Dublin, 3 Dec. 1482. He was an English ecclesiastic who obtained the see by papal provision in April, 1460. Of his earlier life nothing is known. He soon came into conflict with Thomas Fitzgerald, eighth Earl of Desmond, who was deputy to George, Duke of Clarence, Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. The earl accused the bishop of instigating the murder of some of his followers, and in 1464 both went to England to lay their grievances before the king. Edward IV upheld the earl, who was supported by the Irish parliament, and acquitted him of all charges of disloyalty and treasonable relations with the Irish people. But when in 1467 he was disgraced, and succeeded by the Earl of Worcester, Bishop Sherwood was suspected of leading the opposition, which finally brought the earl to the scaffold. Some years after his rival's death, Sherwood himself was appointed deputy, but his own rule was so unpopular that in 1477 he was removed from office, having governed for two years. He held the Chancellorship of Ireland from 1475 to 1481. He lies buried at Newton Abbey near Trim.

    1. [SHERWOOD] The Sherwood Inn, Skaneateles, NY
    2. I forgot to mention that The Sherwood Inn has its own website www.thesherwoodinn.com While President, Bill Clinton, Mrs. Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea, dined there. For photos of the occassion, see... http://www.thesherwoodinn.com/president/ This really is a stunning inn. Check out the canopy on the bed in Room 30. http://www.thesherwoodinn.com/lodging/Room30.htm Sorry if I'm getting a little carried away here. Don't worry, the Sherwood Inn isn't paying me to do this. Cronyism has not yet spread from Washington DC to Towaco, NJ. 1. [SHERWOOD] Re: Isaac Sherwood, 1769-1840, Auburn, Cayuga Co, NY
    2. I just noticed that my email program somehow inserted a "space" at one point in each of the links that I provided to the portrait of Isaac Sherwood and the "Sherwood Inn". If that is how you received the links, just cut and paste them and delete the space. If you have any problem getting to the webpages, let me know. 1. [SHERWOOD] Isaac Sherwood, 1769-1840, Auburn, Cayuga Co, NY
    2. Dear Sherwoods and Kin, Any time I come across an old photo or portrait of a Sherwood, I achieve a momentary state of nirvana. I fortuitously stumbled across a hard-to-find website that contains an oil portrait of Isaac Sherwood, 1769-1840, resident of Skaneateles, and later, Auburn, Cayuga County, NY. This was doubly exciting because Isaac was always an intriguing character to me. He comes from that clan of Sherwoods who did that little migratory dipsy-doodle from Connecticut back up to Massachusetts, settling in Williamstown, Berkshire County. Isaac was born in Williamstown on 12 OCT 1769, and married Mary BABBIT, of Ashford, MA. He moved to upstate NY around 1797, eventually settling in Skaneateles, Cayuga County. At one point he was appointed Justice of the Peace. But his claim to local fame is that he started a very successful stagecoach line around 1806, and soon thereafter had a tavern built on the site of what is now known as the "Sherwood Inn", in Skaneateles, NY. Here I'll quote from the website that shows his portrait: "Two years later (GCS: i.e. 1806), he was granted a contract to carry the mail from Onondaga Hill to the west. He did this on foot at first, but later bought a stagecoach. In 1807, Isaac Sherwood had a tavern built on the present site of the Sherwood Inn, and he used the tavern as headquarters for his prosperous stagecoach business. In 1829, he sold his Skaneateles property and moved to Auburn where he built the American Hotel. Many years later, he died in 1840 and was buried in Lake View Cemetery. The name Sherwood is always associated with Skaneateles and the landmark Sherwood Inn." The oil portrait is on the following webpage: http://ixpub.cnyric.org/cnyricpublic/history/skaneate/statest/barabba/sit e7.htm Click on the portrait to enlarge it. Isaac looks to be in his 30's or early 40's in the portrait, so I would estimate that it was painted sometime between 1800 and 1815. This is one of the earliest Sherwood portraits that I've ever encountered. The portrait now hangs in the dining room of the Sherwood Inn, in Skaneateles. Also, check out the incredible house made out of "fieldstone", built "for Isaac Sherwood" around 1807, but subsequently purchased by Alford Lamb, and now known as the "Alford House." http://ixpub.cnyric.org/cnyricpublic/history/skaneate/statest/mcquigg/alf ord/alford.htm Again, click on the picture to get an enlarged view of this wonderfully unique house. For old and "recent" (1970's) photos of the Sherwood Inn, visit... http://ixpub.cnyric.org/cnyricpublic/history/skaneate/statest/taylor/site 1.htm I know very little about the descendants of Isaac and Mary, so I'd love to hear from anyone with knowledge of this Sherwood family. All I know is that they had children Minerva, Melinda, John Milton, Eliza, and possibly a son named Albert, who may have lived in Buffalo, NY.
