    1. [SHERWOOD] ADMIN: Virus: W32/Badtrans@MM
    2. Jim Young
    3. Dear Fellow Subscribers, Discussing viruses on a genealogy surname discussion list is normally "OFF-TOPIC". However, W32/Badtrans@MM is a unique virus in that it sends itself from an infected Microsoft mail program computer using email addresses found in the "In-Box". This means that if you send a query to a RootsWeb surname list and your query is distributed to a list subscriber who uses Microsoft mail programs and whose computer is infected with the virus, the virus will respond to your message returning the virus "README.TXT.pif" and other file names as an attached file. If you receive a response to your email, DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHED FILE UNLESS YOUR ARE EXPECTING AN ATTACHED FILE. If each list subscriber does not have an antivirus program or updated their Virus definition file since about 18 April 2001, please take action immediately to either update the Virus definition file or purchase an antivirus software program. I'm not attempting to alarm anyone, only to inform. Please continue to post queries to genealogy discussion list... but be careful of any response having an attached file. The infected subscriber does not know that they have the virus or that the virus is using their computer to send the virus to every everyone that they have received a message from. If anyone on this list receives a response with an attached virus from this list as a result of posting a query on this list, please kill the virus (deleting the attached file) and forward the message to me. I will work with the subscriber in removing the virus from their infected computer. Regards, Jim Young List Admin

    1. [SHERWOOD] Justus Sherwood, Boston, MA 1807
    2. Dear List members, The Boston City Directory for 1807 lists a "Justus SHERWOOD, Housewright, Ann Street". I am wondering if this Justus SHERWOOD is either the son of, or THE Justus SHERWOOD [Thomas (1) Stephen (2) Joseph (3) Joseph (4) Justus (5)], whose line married heavily into the WETMORE line of Thomas (1) Izrahiah (2) James (3) James (4) John (5). Also, does anyone know where Ann street is/was located in Boston? Is/was it near Salem Street in Boston? Is it by any chance near Charlestown? I am looking forward to hearing input anyone may have on this matter. Thanks, Celia

    3. Deanna, I'm interested to know where Ann Griffith came from. Justus Sherwood was my ggggrandfather. He was born in Westchester County on 30 May 1766 and died 11 March 1843 in Kiersteadville, Kings County, New Brunswick. In 1790, he married Jane Walker, born 11 November 1773 in South Carolina, died 1859 Kiersteadville, NB. In Justus Gray's will, he left her exclusive use of the western room, land, two cows and six sheep. Everything else went to the children of this marriage. I am not aware that there is another Justus Gray, especially in the Kings County area, but maybe there is. Let me know if this is a different one. 1. [SHERWOOD] Sherwood DNA
    2. Hi All, For those of you who might consider DNA testing to aid in determining your ancestry, I'd like to share an interesting newspaper article that I read in the Feb. 28th New Jersey "Star Ledger." A 51 year old, former Rutgers University professor, Ms. Pearl Duncan had spent nine years and thousands of dollars trying to trace her ancestors from America to Jamaica, on back to Africa. Slaveholders left scant historical records of the origins of their slaves, so Ms. Duncan lacked scientific evidence connecting her family to Africa. But at long last, with the help of a University of Arizona geneticist, using samples of her father's DNA, the scientist helped prove that ancestors of Ms. Duncan lived in Ghana. Ms. Duncan's father had a patois nickname "Pari", which she felt probably came from the surname "Opare" used by the Akan people of southern Ghana. But she lacked hard evidence. So she launched a search for recent Ghanaian immigrants with the Opare surname near her home in New York. >From churches in Harlem and Flatbush, she found and persuaded 36 parishioners to submit DNA samples to the Arizona geneticist, hoping to find a match with her father's samples. What she found was astonishing. Of the 36 people, 30 were found to have a common ancestor with her father. Ms. Duncan says there is a strong physical resemblance between her own family and some of the African families whose DNA matched her father's samples, showing they shared a common ancestor some 400 years ago. As evidence she offers photos of herself and immigrant Vida Opare, a nurse and DNA "cousin" who "looks more like me than some of my sisters do," Duncan said (the article contains photos of Ms. Duncan and Ms. Opare, and it is absolutely stunning - they almost look like identical twins). Another DNA relative, Ghanaian engineering student Kwabena Kissiedo Mankure-Atiemo, closely resembles her nephew, David Burnett, a Tennessee engineering student. The article goes on to say: "Some companies are taking thousands of blood and saliva samples in order to build a vast DNA database. They hope to construct databases so comprehensive that, with a single sample of blood or a swab of the cells from inside a customer's cheek, they can link an individual to a relative across town or to an ancestor thousands of miles and centuries ago." The article mentions that one technique to test for relatedness is to search for at least 12 common genetic markers along the Y-chromosome, which is passed intact from father to son. Another common test compares genetic markers found in DNA within the mitochondria (remember all the press a few years ago about mitochondria and the two conflicting "Out of Africa" theories of anatomically-modern human migration?), which is inherited by all children from their biological mothers. One of the for-profit companies that does DNA testing is "Family Tree DNA" (see www.FamilyTreeDNA.com). I am not promoting the site; I know nothing about it other than the fact that it was mentioned in the article. The article says they charge from US $219 to $319 for tests. Particularly in Europe, more and more private firms are offering to perform DNA analysis for genealogy purposes. For $180, Oxford Ancestors (www.OxfordAncestors.com) headed by Bryan Sykes, a researcher from the Univeristy of Oxford in England, will test the DNA of people of European descent. "The for-profit firms are only part of a larger picture. Universities, anthropology groups and historical commissions are among those trying to establish DNA databases that will help determine origin and link ancestry." "In New York, the African Burial Ground Project is testing the remains of slaves buried in Lower Manhattan to provide a DNA comparison with modern Africans and African-Americans. In Washington D.C., African Ancestry Project researchers at Howard University are collecting blood samples throughout West Africa to trace the lineage of Americans. And in Utah, the Molecular Genealogy Project at Brigham Young University is attempting to build a database of 100,000 DNA samples from 500 population groups around the world." 1. [SHERWOOD] Thomas the Immigrant Sherwood 1585-1655 gets married.
    2. Hi! I have been trying to type my wife's Sherwood information into my computer. I am stuck on Thomas the Immigrant Sherwood marriage records. I know that he arrived in 1634 in Massachusetts with Alice Carpenter as his wife. Was he married to Alice Carpenter and Mary Fitch? Does anyone have an idea when and where he was married to each? I had printed out the e-mails that I have received and I am confused. Another part that confuses me is the marriage record of Captain Matthew Sherwood (1643-1715). Was he also married to a woman named Mary Fitch, or did I mess it up? If there are two Mary Fitch, can anyone give their relationships and dates of birth and death? Thank you, Your friend, Doc Huer@aol.com 6 March 2001

    3. Thanks to CalTeri for the suggestion to get Harry SHERWOOD's death certificate. That something so obvious should elude me for so long is a mystery. None the less, I have received it, and have the following additional information about my husband's grandfather: Harry (Henry) Jacob SHERWOOD born June 12, 1882, New York, New York died June 28, 1954, Ridgefield, Connecticut Wife's name: Mary ALBUS Father's name: Jacob SHERWOOD of New York, New York Mother's name: Sara QUACKENBUSH, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The information on the death certificate was supplied by his middle son, Roland Albus SHERWOOD. What the meaning of the name Henry in parentheses means, I have no idea, but I will now search for Henry Jacob SHERWOOD of New York City to see if I can get any matches. Also, there have been some references to a Jacob SHERWOOD which I will check. Gerda Sherwood, NIST North 558, Mail Stop 8970, x 3354

    1. [SHERWOOD] SHERWOOD, Harry Jacob
    2. Gertrude Sherwood
    3. I read with a great deal of envy all the successful searches for the Sherwood ancestors. There are Sherwood's on two sides of my husband's family, his fathers's side, and several generations back, also on his mother's side. His mother's family (Tulloch, CRARY, White) had a genealogy prepared in the early 1920's which has been updated by her branch of the family. Included in it are several Sherwood branches. These are not the Sherwood's I am seeking. My husband's paternal grandmother destroyed all family records lest her age be identified. Mary Theresa ALBUS Sherwood, died in Laurel, Maryland in 1960. She died before I met my husband. I am attempting to find his paternal grandfather's family. His grandfather, HARRY JACOB SHERWOOD died in Ridgefield(?), Connecticut in 1954 or 1955. He had three sons, Harry Roy Sherwood (1908-1959), Roland Albus Sherwood (1910-1989) and Edwin ? Sherwood (1913-1993?). I have been lead to believe HARRY JACOB SHERWOOD was born in the late 1870's or early 1880's in or around New York City but I have no proof. He had a social security number, but because he died before 1955, searches of the social security registries have not located him. I have located his sons' social security numbers, but that has not lead me any closer to HARRY JACOB SHERWOOD. Most of the resources I have been able to locate on Sherwood genealogy have come forward to about the 1860s, take a "break" between the 1860's to about the 1920's, and then resume. Does anyone have a "lost" Sherwood great-uncle from that era? from the greater New York City area? Is there an archive for Sherwood's in this time frame?
