Thanks Geoff. The notes I have came from my cousin Jason Gervase. The 4 Sherwoods I listed are the only ones he shows buried in that cemetery. I'm going to get the film again and check out what Willsons are buried there, since we have discovered a Willson connection. The person that really interests me in this cemetery is "Dorinda, wife of Charles Jimmerson, died 11 March 1841, age 26 years, 3 months, 1 day". I suspect that Charles Jimmerson was a grandson of Nehemiah Sherwood and Mary Shelly through their daughter Sarah Jamison, so I was curious to see how closely the two Nehemiahs were related. One thing genealogy should teach us all is to give children original names! I think there are far too many Nehemiah Sherwoods. Hi Marilyn, The Nehemiah Sherwood that you mentioned was a son of Nehemiah Sherwood and Elizabeth LYON. There is a reference to him in the NYGBR, Vol. 116, p. 87. His wife was Phebe PURDY. His Sherwood line, from his father on back is: Nehemiah, Nathaniel, Stephen, and Thomas the Immigrant. This Nehemiah was a first cousin of the Nehemiah who m. Mary SHELLY; their fathers were brothers. His Sherwood line is Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Stephen, Thomas the Immigrant. I don't know who John W. Sherwood and Sarah HAIGHT are. It's possible that John is John W. Sherwood, grandson of Nehemiah and Phebe (above), son of John Calvin Sherwood (sometimes referred to by his middle name "Calvin") and Polly STEADWELL (See NYGBR, Vol. 116, p. 85). If you have any further information on any of these Sherwood lines, I would love to hear from you. Are there any other Sherwoods buried in that graveyard? According to the massive 4 volume 5,226 page "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files" (Waynesboro, TN: National Historical Pub Co. 1990-) by Virgil D. White, twenty-six Sherwood's who served in the War of Independence applied for pensions. Fourteen served from CN, eight from NY, one from both NY & CN, one from NY & MA, one from NJ and one from VA. Copies of these pension files are available from the National Archives by mail for a fee (I think $37.00). As far as I can determine from NARA's website, the 2,670 microfilm rolls of these pensions are also available for viewing in DC as well several NA regional offices (Kansas City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Pittsfield, MA, Anchorage, AK, Laguna Nigel, CA, San Francisco, Denver, Atlanta and Ft. Worth). Below are listed the twenty-six Sherwood's who applied for pensions with my own abridgement of the abstracts contained in the above mentioned publication--Mr. White's abstracts are more detailed (and, of course, as those of us who have seen pensions records know, the complete original records are full of pretty amazing information). Hi Jenny, I'm the SHERWOOD list manager and I don't believe you have my snail mail address; therefore, you should not be able to send any money to me. As the majority of the SHERWOOD list members know... this surname discussion list is free to anyone having an interest in SHERWOOD genealogy. I don't know who you sent money to; however, if it was RootsWeb, they are no longer accepting contributions since Ancestry.com acquired them. I suggest you request a refund of your money. Hi Jeannie, It is not surprising to me that someone who had served in the local militia, albeit long before the war, would be first in line to join the Colonials at the first call to arms, regardless of his age. It is telling that he achieved the rank of Captain in the militia, yet was a mere Private in Capt. Dimon's company (according to Mrs. Ellis' DAR entry). That tells me that he probably had not been active in the militia for quite some time, and the fact that he was allowed to enlist was possibly a way of bestowing a token honor on a man who had long served his community. If he were not in the best of health, it would not have been wise to have given him a rank any greater than private. The higher the rank, the more energetic one would need to be, both physically and mentally. There should be war records somewhere (National Archives?) that would show when he was mustered out of service. My guess is he would have been mustered out very shortly after he enlisted, within a year or six months. You may want to consult with a Revolutionary War historian on this, but I believe there was some precedence for allowing elderly patriots to enlist, but then mustering them out as quickly as possible, to allow the hale and hearty to do the fighting and the leading of men. I do have a note (lacking source citations) that his son, John, was an officer in the Revolution. I have it that he was a Lt. in the North Fairfield and North Stratford Companies, in Oct. 1773; and later was a Capt. of the 12th Co, 4th Regiment, in May 1775. If this can be proved, then you will know that the DAR references that you cited have not confused John, Sr., with John, Jr. Kind Regards, Geoff Geoffrey Sherwood demidave@juno.com Towaco, NJ, USA ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Dear SHERWOOD List Members, I have just found my 5th Great Grandfather John Sherwood, a Captain in the Fairfield CT county militia, named in the DAR records as follows: * "The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 18 page 145 Mrs. Augusta Josephine Seeley Beach. DAR ID Number: 17377 Gr.-granddaughter of Ezra Seeley and Mary Sherwood, his wife; Hezekiah Banks and Sarah Couch, his wife; Ebenezer Burr and Amelia Goodsell, his wife. Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of John Sherwood and Mary Walker, his wife. Ezra Seeley, (1746-1827), served as sergeant in Capt. Abijah Sterling's company at the battle of Ridgefield, 1777. He was born in Fairfield, Conn., where he died. [p.145] John Sherwood, (1705-79), turned out from Fairfield in Capt. Jonathan Dimon's company at the first call for troops. He was born in Fairfield, where he died. ------------------------------------- * The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 81 page 220 [p.220] Mrs. Florence Averill Seeley Munson. DAR ID Number: 80582 "turned out from Fairfield in Capt. Jonathan Dimon's company at the first call for troops. ---------------------------------------- * "The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 83 page 240 Mrs. Serena Hawley Wolf Ellis. DAR ID Number: 82626 John Sherwood and Mary Walker (1709-67), his wife, m. 1733. John Sherwood (1705-79) served as private in Capt. David Diman's company, Col. David Waterbury's 5th regiment, Connecticut Continental Line." It seems that John Sherwood would have been up there in years to have served in the war. Does anyone have any further information on this service in the Rev. War? John and Mary supposedly had a son named John. Is it possible that the two could have been mistaken? I have other information on John Sherwood as follows: Captain John Sherwood appears in Orcutt's "History of Stratford," and in Donald Lines Jacobus' "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield." Orcutt, pages 577 and 1292, shows John Sherwood as born 22 September 1705; baptized 4 November 1705; deceased 17 July 1779, Stratfield, Fairfield Co, Connecticut; buried Stratfield Burying Place, Stratfield, Connecticut. His gravestone reads: "Here lyes Buried the Body of Captain John Sherwood, who departed this Life September 17th, 1779, in ye 74th year of His Age." He married Mary Walker 14 June 1733 Stratford Congregational Church. In the vital records and church records of Cornwall and Bridgeport, Connecticut, John Sherwood is titled "Sgt" and then promoted to "Capt.". The chronology of John Sherwood's service in the Stratfield Company of Militia is: Sergeant in 1733; Ensign in May 1741; Lieutenant in Oct. 1745; Captain in May 1747. - United Congretational Church of Bridgeport, CT (Stratfield) (LDS microfilm # 0003830), Volume 1 * Page 48: Sgt John Sherwood m.
