Virginia, there is mention of a Friedens church in Wayland's "History of Shenandoah County". There are two locations given. One is listed near Keezletown, in Rockingham County, just eats of Harrisonburg, and another at Toms Brook in Shenandoah county. THe one in Toms Brook is noted as such: "Old Union Church, Lutheran and Reformed, which grew out of the older Friedens Church near Mt. Olive, was dedicated in 1842. St. Peters Lutheran Church was dedicated in 1869, and the present church of the same name in 1905. the following is what he wrote about the Friedens church; " According to tradition, Lutheran activities began in the neighborhood of Mt. Olive about 1806, when Borden's school house was erected by local co-operation near Saumsville. Here Rev. J. Nicholas Schumacker soon began to preach for the community. Later Hottle's school house , with dwelling attached for the teacher and his family, was built near Mt. Olive. Mr. Schmucker preached there also. This house was used jointly by the Lutherans and the Reformed. In 1824, on the site of Hottle's school house, was erected Friedens Church. It was located about a mile south of Mt. Olive and was held jointly by the Reformed and the Lutherans. ............About 1875 the old church as Friedens was replaced by a new church, St. Matthew's, located about a half mile north of the site of Friedens. "" It is entirely possible that St. Matthew's is still there. If not, the cemetery records should be available at the Shenandoah County library in Edinberg. I suggest you make that your first stop, the directions to the church/cemetery will be listed in the cemetery records book. Hope this helps, Ken ps. when are you going, I plan to make a trip myself soon? Perhaps even later this week Possibly I could meet you there and help you find your way around. I consider the Valley home, since my Mother is from New Market. I also have family there and know someone that can possibly fill in the gaps if necessary.
