My Henry Turney grew up in the area south of Woodstock, VA. His father purchased the land early 1750s, sold it in 1787. It was next to Abraham Bird and Bird's Hawkins son-in-law. Henry married Elizabeth - probably in that area. She might have been a Sommer/Summers but have not found their marriage records. Turney were German speaking Swiss and seem to - at least in Henry's case - have stayed with other German speaking families. One of the Summers family I have seen name mentioned with a Dr Denton. Anyway, Henry in 1774 was next to Evan Shelby - probably near present Bristol, Sullivan Co TN. His sister was Eve Turney who married a Teeter from Shen. Co. She was also in that area, as was brother Peter. Eve Turney Teeter daughter married a Nicely/Knisely from Shen. Co. who followed them into Washington Co Va. I find all these names in Shenandoah Co VA. Henry around March 1780 - along with a group of other German speaking people - traveled from Holston River area in what is now Eastern TN to Ft Nashborough NC. Present day Nashille TN. in working on that, I find many names I first find in Shenandoah Co VA. I will send a rather long message - subject Overall - which mentions some of the names. I thought perhaps someone on the Shenandoah list might recognize a surname. I know this is not really about Shenandoah Co Va, but rather where some of the people might have gone.
