For Patti: Not sure if this is going to help or not but here goes: Shenandoah was not formed until 1778. It was formed from Dunmore which only existed from 1772-1778. Dunmore was formed from Frederick County which was formed in 1743. In "Virginia in 1760: A reconstructed Census" published in 1996 there is a Patrick McCarty in Frederick County. He is listed in Frederick County Virginia, Order Book 9, 1760-1762 page 27 and page 70. This is located on LVA reel 69.
