I have been looking for a William SMITH d. 1671 because his widow m Samuel REEDS and became my ancestor. In my search I have tripped over a Tobias SMITH in the 1600s in the same general area. Tobias WOOD may have been named for him. REEDS lived across from Col. John WASHINGTON near Maddox Creek and Pope's Creek, right across the River from Maryland and many people seem to have owned property on both sides of the river. Daniel CROSBY's daughter Sarah m 1736 Henry SMITH 1714-1787-1789 of Stafford Co., Va., so Capt. John SMITH b. Ireland James MARKHAM was the so Lewis MARKHAM d. 1713 Richmond, King Geo and Stafford Cos. Norther Neck land grants page 98 I-151: John Mauzy of Fauquier co. dec'd, in his lifetime obtained Warrant for 14 A. on town Run adj. his Patent in said Co. he died before he had Deed. By Will he devised said land to Betty mauzy his wife for and during her widowhood or till his dau. Peggy Mauzy is Eighteen years of age or till her Marriage at which Time he devises 1/2 of said 14 A. to his dau. Peggy and remaining to his wife Betty. If his wife should Marry or Die whole to his dau. Margaret afores's and to the heirs of her body Lawfully Begotten forever. Deed to Betty Mauzy & margaret Mauzy. Surv. John Moffett. Adj. Michael Dearmond now s'd John Mauzy, Luttrall, Combs. 29 Aug. 1766 page 177 N-166: Betty Mauzy dau. of John Mauzy dec'd of Fauquire Co. 193 A. on Maple Bottom br. of N.R. of Cacapehon in Hampshire Co. Surv. said John Mauzy. Adj. Christopher Smith. 29 Aug. 1766 the second one has both Mauzy and Smith.....might be a clue for you.
