It could very likely be the mother's maiden name, used as a middle name. This was sometimes done, as was using the mother's father's first name for the oldest male child. Here's a doozy for an example, one of my lines is Sheppard, one of my grandfather's sisters, can't recall which number back it is, married a Sheppard cousin, they named their oldest son, Sheppard, her maiden name, hence, his name was Sheppard Sheppard. I've also come across many between my own line and doing lookups, where the middle name of the child is in fact the maiden name of the mother.
