I was wondering if anyone can answer this question. I was viewing the personal property tax records for Shenandoah Co. for the 1820-30's and one entry read like this: Williams, Thomas (Taylor) What does the "Taylor" in brackets mean? There were other entries such as "Williams, John (of Peter) or Williams, Simon (of Wm. C.). I believe these to mean that this John is the son of Peter, and Simon is son of William C. But what does (Taylor) indicate? It is written that way for multiple years, and never says (of Taylor), just (Taylor) - I assume this is a surname?. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
