    3. Hello, This is my first time to write to this list. I am researching the name of Purtlebaugh/Burtlebaugh/Bartlebaugh along with Marple and Loy and Babb. We think our ancestors arrived about 1750-54 at the port of Philadelphia. The name may have been Bartenbach or Bardenbach. We know one moved to the area of Back Creek and Gore Virginia. By the 1820 Virginia Census, we find one of our family living in Stephensburg Va and think that is now called Stephens City. Census listed on a search of the name Bartleaugh from Ancestery.com. George came up for the first time last week though we knew of 3 with the Bartlebaugh name in Pa. George Bartlebaugh Stephensburg, Frederick, VA 1820 When looking at the actual page the name looks more like Burtlebaugh. This George married 3 times and some in the family spelled their name Purtlebaugh. George is known more as George Purtlebaugh and used all three spellings at one time or another. Is anyone on this list researching these names or knows anyone that married into the family? Where would I look for early records if they were born in Gore or Stephens City? I would say they would have been members of a Brethren Church. I am especially after the birth and marriage records of John and Phillip Bartlebaugh born 1770-1775. We learned from 1880 census of their children in Pennsylvania that father was born in Va. We think they are cousins to this Purtlebaugh family. George Purtlebaugh was born 1799 and his father in around 1752-54. There seems a gap about anyone born early 1770s though. Any information is appreciated and thank you. 3. I hope I am doing this correctly. I am a descendant thru Mary PERKIZER PURKHISER and Elisha EMMONS. I know that they were married in Frederick Co, VA. The PURKHISERs are said to have lived in the Shenandoah Valley for about 20 years being 1780 - 1800. After that they moved to Mason Co, KY. My Mary was born in Virginia in ca 1783. She is the daughter of Michael PURKISER and Catherine HARDING. They traveled with some BORING and some FUNK. They were originally from PA out of Germany. I have done a lot of research but have many questions. What is the best way to find out who is researching which branchses within the Shenandoah Valley?? In which counties of Virginia would I need to search to cover the Valley.. I have located some data but not enough for the entire picture. Thanks for reading this message. 3. Pat, I'm just trying to locate the actual marriage record in the Shen. Co. library or archives, to ascertain if there is a sponsor or witness mentioned. I don't doubt that the marriage occurred--the library just can't find the record. gspore@juno.com On Sun, 28 Mar 2004 21:23:17 -0500 "P. 3. I see the name Shoemaker popping up again. I have tried previously to connect with George Shoemaker descendants, because his land grant in 1779 shows his land adjoining Henry Spoore, who I believe to be my g-g-g-gf, father of Jacob Spore. The land grant reads as follows: 24 Apr 1779, 191 acres of both sides of Ryans Run a branch of Stony Creek adjoining Henry Spoore Source Northern Neck Grants R, 1778-1780, p 183 (Reel 297). This is the only reference to land owned by Heinrich (Henry) Spohr (Spore) in Shen. Co. Would like to hear from Shoemaker researchers who know where this land was. Gerald L (Jerry) Spore

    3. Hi List, I have recently re-subscribed after being off the list for a few years. I'm going to post my Shen. Co. brick walls one at a time to see if there are any new ideas. In Wayland's Shen. Co. Hist. a marriage is listed that could be very important to my research. Aug 16 1785 Casper Hemp to Magdalene Spore Simon Harr, minister I would like to have a copy of the original record to see if any other names are mentioned, as witnesses, etc. I have submitted a request to the Shen. Co. Library, where the archives are supposed to be, but they can not find the record. It is on page 746 of Wayland's book. Does anyone have any ideas where these records could be? Has anyone else had this experience with early Shen. marriage records? In 1792, my g-g-grandparents, Jacob Spore and Maria Magdelina Dressler were married in Shen. Co., and their marriage record is available. I would like to know if Jacob was a brother, or other relative, of Magdeline Spore Hemp. Casper (or Gasper) Hemp appears in several tax lists between 1783 and 1795, sometimes alone, and sometimes with Phillip Snapp or Jacob Spore/Spoar. After several of the Maucks and Spores moved to Washington Co. TN, from 1790 to 1806, my Mauck g-g-grandparents, Jacob Mauck and Margaret Hemp, were married there in 1811. Soon afterward, several of these Maucks moved to Harrison Co. IN. I am trying to determine Margaret Hemp Mauck's parents. Gerald L (Jerry) Spore (Spore,Fravel,Hottell,Keller,Mauck,Hemp,Dressler)

    3. Do you have any information about the parents/siblings of Catharine Coffman? There has been a presumption by some that John Day married a Coffman, but some have said it was a John Dake. (very late 1700's). In your research, have you run across any of this? Nikolaus b 1762 immigrated in 1794 leaving behind he wife and daughter. he eventually remarried His two nephews (Philip, and Jacob) and their mother (Magdalena) immigrated in 1803 settling in the same area. At one point Nikolaus and sister Magdalena are suppose to have been in the same household. Of this group of four Philip and Magdalena (after she marries a Peter Zimmerman) are the only ones that show up in the census. Philip eventually moves to Ohio Does anyone have any idea why I can't find Jacob and Nikolaus ( d 1828 ) and/or where I might find information. 3. Dear Good Folks, I am trying to track two lines of my family back to the Shenandoah Valley in the mid to late 1700s. The Rodeheiffers eventually migrated to the Washington County, Virginia area and the Mitchells to Kentucky. I believe these two familys either met because they were neighbors or because of their service at Kings Mountain during the Revolutionary War. But where do I begin? Could someone from the list recommend an online source for me to continue my search in the Valley. Are their sources for land grants and deeds? Cemetery Records? I just don't know where to begin. Thanks for your help. I am beholdin'. Sincerely, Jennifer
