    2. Do you have a John Stevenson, or a Francis Stevenson. It may have been spelled Stephenson, as back in those days you were at the mercy of the person writing it. Spirit

    3. Wesley Calvin GEORGE (b. 29 Dec 1840) I am trying to find the parents and family of Wesley Calvin GEORGE, who was born 29 Dec 1840 in Virginia. His obituary lists his birthplace as Shanadvak, Virginia. I have never been able to find this name. (It may be a misinterpretation of Shenandoah.) I have been searching since 1989 without any luck. This is one of my last lines to complete for the 19th century. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Aaron Hill Salem, Oregon

    1. William and Mary (Whitemeyer) Beatty married ca 1801 and son Robert
    2. CJEngland
    3. Sharon, Here's what I found on Robert Beatty/Jane Crouse, as well as Jane's family. (IF it's YOUR line) NOTE: THIS FAMILY SEEMS TO HAVE MOVED TO WARREN COUNTY, VA SOON AFTER MARRIAGE. MANY OF THEIR CHILDREN WERE BORN IN WARREN COUNTY. GUESS WHERE I LIVE!? WARREN COUNTY, VA! When I looked through family names in Warren County, it was like walking down Main St., Front Royal! Weikert, Partlow, Showalter, and many more are STILL present in Warren County. I knew a Beatty family here, at one time. So, here's what Ancestry.com had: BEATTY, Robert, b. 1807, VA m. Aug 2 (or 4), 1831, Frederick Co., VA d. 1882/1888, VA Buried in Ridings Chapel Cemetery (located in neighboring Frederick Co, VA- United Methodist Church, Stephens City, VA) CROUSE, Jane b. 1810/1815 d. Aft. 1860, Warren County, VA (Daughter of : Michael Crouse and Elizabeth Shert) According to one Ancestry.com contributor, Robert Beaty and Jane Crouse had 12 Children (or more) Do you want their data? Connie VA

    2. CJEngland
    3. Sharon, Here's (possibly) some information on your William and Mary's marriage date: Listed, on Ancestry.com's Va Marriage Records were these two entries: 1. William Beaty married Mary Whitmoir, 19 Mar 1796, Shenandoah Co, VA Strangely enough, there was a 2nd listing, for the same marriage, with a couple differences: 2. William Beaty married Mary Whitmyer, 21 Mar 1796, Shenandoah Co, VA The two day difference in the marr. dates might be the "official recording" date of the marriage versus the ceremony date..... Have not found Robert's information. Do you have any of his siblings' names? Connie

    3. William Beatty (Beaty) married Mary Whitmeyer (Whitmyer / Whitmire) ca 1801 in Shenandoah Co. VA. They had several children. One of their sons was named Robert. I am seeking information on that Robert Beatty. When was he born? Did he marry, and if so to whom? When did he die? Thanks so much, Sharon Wilcox wilcoxphoto@dmci.net

    1. Re: Place Name Norfolk in Shenandoah?
    2. Glen Fine
    3. Debbie, Thank you for the observation about the North Fork. Thats likely the basis for confusion about Norfolk. My Philip Fine was a brother of my direct ancestor, Vinett Fine. They were sons of Thomas Fine. They are on the Dunmore County Militia rolls. Philip Fine moved to St.Louis, Mo, in 1781 and died there in 1824. He married twice in St Louis. I have also seen reports that Catherine Parrott married Philip Peter Fine in Shenandoah County. My research suggests that Catherine Parrott married Philip Peter Fent/Fant. This Philip Fent/Fant was also a Revolutionary War veteran. He and Catherine moved to east Tennessee (as did most of the Fines) and I believe there is a Parrett Valley there named for them. They moved on to Ohio where Philip and Catherine were buried. Other than that, I've done no research on the Parrott family Glen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deborah Brown" <dmsbrown1953@yahoo.com> To: "Glen Fine" <gefine@comcast.net> Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2006 7:34 PM Subject: Re: Place Name Norfolk in Shenandoah? > Glen -- > I think that the person who submitted the DAR > application or perhaps the transcriber misread the > original source. 3. A distant cousin of mine has recorded in a 1950 DAR application that her Patriot ancestor, Philip Fine, lived in "Shenandoah near Norfolk" at the time of his Rev.War service. The only Norfolk I know about is the big city of Norfolk on the coast. But, I'm mindful that sometimes there are two or more places with the same name. Is anyone aware perhaps of any small place in Shenandoah County that may have been called Norfolk? Thanks, Glen Fine

    1. Re: Michael ROMICK & Rachel GOCHENOUR
    2. Linda, I don't know how much you know about the GOCHENOURS so I will just give you a baseline look, in case you did not already know. Henry GOCHENOUR, the emigrant is the father of your Rachel. Henry GOCHENOUR is my grandfather through his son, Henry GOCHENOUR, Jr. Settling in the Shenandoah Valley at the same time was Jacob GOCHENOUR, the emigrant. They are thought to be brothers; but as far as I know, it has never been proven that the two emigrant GOCHENOURS were, in fact, brothers. However, they were "in fact" neighbors acquiring their first lands at about the same time. Henry GOCHENOUR is recorded with a land grant of 300 acres on 20 Oct 1750 on the north side of Narrow Passage near St. Luke, Shenandoah County, Virginia. The location of this property is approximately 2.5 miles from the land grant issued to Jacob Gochenour, the imigrant for 400 acres located about 4 miles northwest of Woodstock, Shenandoah Co., Virginia and is today where the community of Fairview is located. The date of Jacob GOCHENOUR, the emigrant's first grant found was June 15, 1754; however, there has been found a survey done for him dated November 2, 1750. In summery, it appears the two GOCHENOUR, emigrants were in the valley before 1750 if you consider the time it took to get all the land documentation work completed and recorded. My RITTER family members have married into the GOCHENOUR family a number of times with some moving West together as time moved forward. My Great-Great Grandparents were Jacob RITTER and Elizabeth GOCHENOUR. Jacob's sister, Lucinda RITTER married Elizabeth's brother, Jonathan Calvin. Elizabeth and Jonathan Calvin GOCHENOUR were the children of Jacob GOCHENOUR, the son of Henry GOCHENOUR, Jr. and the Grandson of Henry GOCHENOUR, Sr., the emigrant. As a young child, the GOCHENOUR and RITTER families were still close friends and neighbors in the farming community where my Grandmother Maud RITTER was born and raised in Illinois. Both the emigrant GOCHENOUR pioneer settlers (Jacob & Henry, Sr.), appear to have used naming patterns in the old world traditions which has left much confusion as to which family a person belonged as both families used the same names! The marriage of my grandfather Jacob GOCHENOUR to Leah CHRISMAN connect by roots directly to Magdalina HITE making Joist/Yost HITE one of my direct Grandfathers. Let me know what information you already have and what kind of information you need. I will be glad to help you, if I can, but I don't want to repeat "stuff" you already know. Chocy

    1. Shireman, Fultz, Romick, Gochenour
    2. Williams
    3. My Shenandoah County ancestors are Peter Scheuerman and his wife Rosina. Their son Barnet Shireman married Catherine Fultz. They were the parents of Emanuel Shireman and his wife Martha Ellen (Last name unknown). I am searching for a Martha Ellen born c 1800 near Stony Creek. In 1829, Emanuel and Martha Ellen were admitted to the poorhouse. At that time they were "of Stony Creek" The last poorhouse record I have found for them was in 1833. Emanuel must have died there, because in 1839, Martha Ellen remarried to Aaron Poland. Henry Bauserman was the bondsman. My husband's ancestors were Michael Romick and Rachel Gochenour, also from Shenandoah County. If anyone has information on these families, I would like to correspond with you. Linda

    3. Don't know if you both are aware of it or not, but there's a great bookstore that sells thousands of genealogy related books. I've bought several from them that I couldn't find elsewhere. You can go online to search, and also sign up for their updated catalogs. The site is www.heritagebooks.com - and www.willowbendbooks.com hope you can find some things there that you need - their prices are very good also. 3. I have been reading the discussion on the Lutheran Zion Pine Church. I have a book "200 Years in the Shenandoah Valley" by Arthur P. Kelley. In it is the Births, Baptisms, Conformations & Communicants of the Pine Church. starting around 1782 John Rinker and Paul Henkel seem to be the Pastors. By the map in the front of the book this Pine Church is located between the towns of Rinkerton and Forestville on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Is this the church you mean, or a different Pine Church. This book is not indexed. I am researching the Harshbarger and Trigler families of that area. Betty.
