Virginia, I suggest you stay in Harrisonburg and plan "day trips" to surrounding counties. H'burg has a court house and library and historical society where you will find records. Here is a link for what is available in H'burg: -- Rockingham Co. VAGenWeb http://home.rica.net/tel16/rham/ And in Augusta County: Augusta County, Virginia, Resources http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/augusta2.html Good luck in finding the Longs and Reubushes. Have you considered Page County for the Longs? --Wendy

Can anyone tell me anything about Miracle Run, WV. My grandmother and her family lived there and I've heard some facinating tales of snakes rolling down mountains with their tails in their mouths and many ghost stories that fascinated a little girl. Thanks, carolyn
Virginia, there is mention of a Friedens church in Wayland's "History of Shenandoah County". There are two locations given. One is listed near Keezletown, in Rockingham County, just eats of Harrisonburg, and another at Toms Brook in Shenandoah county. THe one in Toms Brook is noted as such: "Old Union Church, Lutheran and Reformed, which grew out of the older Friedens Church near Mt. Olive, was dedicated in 1842. St. Peters Lutheran Church was dedicated in 1869, and the present church of the same name in 1905. the following is what he wrote about the Friedens church; " According to tradition, Lutheran activities began in the neighborhood of Mt. Olive about 1806, when Borden's school house was erected by local co-operation near Saumsville. Here Rev. J. Nicholas Schumacker soon began to preach for the community. Later Hottle's school house , with dwelling attached for the teacher and his family, was built near Mt. Olive. Mr. Schmucker preached there also. This house was used jointly by the Lutherans and the Reformed. In 1824, on the site of Hottle's school house, was erected Friedens Church. It was located about a mile south of Mt. Olive and was held jointly by the Reformed and the Lutherans. ............About 1875 the old church as Friedens was replaced by a new church, St. Matthew's, located about a half mile north of the site of Friedens. "" It is entirely possible that St. Matthew's is still there. If not, the cemetery records should be available at the Shenandoah County library in Edinberg. I suggest you make that your first stop, the directions to the church/cemetery will be listed in the cemetery records book. Hope this helps, Ken ps. when are you going, I plan to make a trip myself soon? Perhaps even later this week Possibly I could meet you there and help you find your way around. I consider the Valley home, since my Mother is from New Market. I also have family there and know someone that can possibly fill in the gaps if necessary.
I am planning a trip to Virginia to the Friedens Church Cemetery, for one important part. I am trying to set up the trip, and I was hoping to find someone who has the records of that old church. My sister, who lives in Washington, said she tried to call someone, using the name of Friedens Church, and there was no phone number listed. I was under the impression that the church was still active. Does it go by another name now? How can I talk to someone who has church membership lists and cemetery records? What I really need is an address and a phone number. Thanks a million. Virginia Hutson [email protected]
Ola, there is some information on a Crawford family that settled in Strausburg in 1795. James Crawford Sr., born in Cumberland County, Penn., in 1759, brought his family to Strausgurg, Va. and practiced medicine there until 1807. There is aslo some info on the Ashby family. If you do noe have access the Wayland's book, "A History Of Shenandoah County" contact me directly and perhaps I can help you more. Ken
PS. I still have family near there if anyone need more location data you may contact me direct. Ken
Hi, According to Wayland, Pine Forge was located on the west side of the Massanutten Mountain in the upper end of Shenandoah County. Apparently located near Smith Creek. re: Dirck Pennypacker;, "the census of Shenandoah County taken in 1783 by Alexander Hite does not contain Pennypacker's name: but his name does appear in the census of 1785, as the head of a family- a remarkedly large family, sixty four in number! At this time (1785) he evendently was living on the west side of the Massanutten Mountain, in the upper end of the county. Therefore, it seems reasonable to conclud that he had already established himself on Smith Creek, at the place where he and his sons developed as extensive iron-making business, which became well known all over the county as Pine Forge." Hope this helps. Ken
One of my Ancestors - Mary Rigney (who wed George Henton in Shenandoah in 1785. She had a guardian, Phillip Sanniston - who I know nothing about. I am trying to locate a will or court order of guardianship of Philip for Mary in Shenandoah County. Do you have a book of court documents or records in which you could look this up? Do you know anything at all about Phillip Sanniston of Shenandoah. Many thanks in advance Regards Dusty Smith

Hi All, I am trying to find the middle name of George W. Timmons, born in Stafford County, VA about 1834. He served in the Confederate Army in "The Late unpleasantness" as it is referred to in SC. I know by his marriage application that his parents were John and Louise or Louisa Timmons. George married Apalona or Eppalona Rogers of Grafton, Taylor, VA 10 July 1856. Any help in finding ancestors of George will greatly appreciated. BTW George was my GGGrandfather. Thanks in advance, LaDonna Hall Cassell Hopkins

Hi Group! I am researching Andrew McComb b. 1794 in Rockcastle Co. VA. Recently, a newfound cousin said one of our uncles told her that Andrew was nephew to Alexander McComb, who was prominent in the Revolutionary War. I vaguely remember hearing of him--from where, I don't know. Does anyone have or can anyone recommend reading that I can find that would give me this information? Can anyone tell me where the Pine Forge district on Census records in the late 1700/early 1800 time frame was located? I suspect it was in the Chester Gap area, South of Front Royal but have no evidence.
