I will answer each one of you that replied to my call for help with my Kagy's. It will take a little time so I just wanted to say "THANKS TO YOU ALL." This a terrific list. Peggy Denton in K.C. [email protected]
Seek information on Jonathan Cooper b. 16 Apr 1819. In a letter written by his granddaughter Manetta Maud Cooper she says he was of English descent and had two red headed sisters Myria and Marie. He was from the Shenandoah area of Virginia. He married Mary Maston (I don't know if this was in Ohio or Virginia) and they farmed in Gurnsey Co. Ohio until after the civil war when they moved to Missouri. I would like very much to know more about this family Kathleen Church
Can you assist me with my in-laws? Ancestors of George Peter FOLTZ, b. 02/22/1767 m. 01/03/1787 Mary or Mariah RUGLE probably in Shenandoah County. And her parents? Birthdate and lineage of Margaret HUMRICKHOUSER, b. 1795, Shenandoah County. Ancestors of Abraham HIZEY, b. 11/20/1795, Rockingham County, m. Elizabeth NEWMAN 08/05/1818 in the Shenandoah. And her parents? I realize spellings of these surnames will vary, but any help is appreciated. Thanks, Tim Huff
Hi Mary, AniMap is a computer program which displays county boundaries for all states for each year since the late 1700s. You can buy it for about $80. Perhaps your local Mormon Family history Library has a copy that you can use. Shenandoah county, VA land records thanks to Joe Baker.....guess I missed the message the first time. Now I see that a land record for 1753 could say my ancestor was from Augusta Co, when later the land would be in Frederick/Dunmore/Shenandoah. Near Woodstock, Va. I still do not know why I found these records for 1753 and 1764, a bill of sale dated 1766 - under Dunmore records, but at least I found them. (it was Dunmore from 1772-1778). I knew some of the names in other records mentioned at same time - like a Nizeley (Nicely/Knisely) and a Hawkins were also names in both Augusta, but also living near my ancestor in Frederick/Shenandoah. As a matter of fact, he sold his land in 1787 to a Bird, his son sold his to a Hawkins - these were their neighbors and I understand the Hawkins was son-in-law to Abraham Bird. Anyway, it all begins to make sense now. My ancestor probably never really moved during this time, just the county lines moved. thank you very much Mary [email protected]

Here is a message that Joe Baker posted a few months ago about County Lines. SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA LAND RECORDS WHERE DO I SEARCH? References Martha W. Hiden, How Justice Grew, Virginia Counties: An Abstract of Their Formation. John. W. Wayland, A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia. >From 1721 to 1734, the Shenandoah Co., VA area was part of Spotsylvania Co. In 1734 it became part of Orange Co. The Assembly created Frederick and Augusta Cos. in 1738. Not until 1743 did Frederick have sufficient tithables and was financially able to hold court and record documents. In 1745 Augusta set up her county organization. The line at that time separating Frederick and Augusta corresponded to the original Fairfax Line, passing in or near Thorton's Gap in the Blue Ridge, crossing the Valley near Oak Hill (now in Page County, north of Luray, between Big Spring and Rileyville), St. David's Church (in Powell's Fort), and the Narrow Passage on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River (between Woodstock and present-day Edinburg). In 1753 the Assembly redrew the dividing line between Frederick and Augusta Cos. and moved it to the Southwest corresponding. to the 1746 survey of the Fairfax Line. The new line passed through present-day Page Co., a few hundred yards above the village of Newport, crossed the Massanutten Mountain and passed just above New Market. Shenandoah Co. (original named Dunmore) was formed from Frederick Co. in 1772. Where should one search for Shenandoah County deeds and other court records? 1721-1734 Spotsylvania County 1734-1745 Orange County 1743-1772 Frederick County 1745-1753 Augusta County 1772- Up Shenandoah County (named Dunmore 1772-1778) Joe Baker
May I quote a passage from a book about my ancestors who were killed in the Civil War: "...Frank {is buried} in the family cemetery at New Town." The "family cemetery" could be the LONG family or the RUEBUSH family or the FIREBAUGH family. Does anyone know of a family cemetery in a place called New Town, VA? Perhaps the place is Newtown or Newton? I will appreciate any help I can get. Virginia Long Hutson [email protected]
Can someone tell me how to get to the Melanchton Chapel Cemetery from Weyers Cave, please? Thanks, Virginia Long Hutson [email protected]
Hi, I have the following quotation from a book about the family of ADAM LONG,SR's family: "...Long ancestors settled in the Valley of Virginia--the Shenandoah Valley--about 1750. In 1796...Adam Long built his home of logs a story-and-a-half high....a mile and a half from the "Old Stone Church" (Fort Defiance), located on the Valley Pike some 11 miles [north] of Staunton, Virginia." Does the "Old Stone Church" still stand? Are "Old Stone Church" and Fort Defiance the same exact place? Thanks, Virginia Long Hutson [email protected]

Is there someone who knows all about the change in county lines for Frederick/Dunmore/Shenandoah counties in Va? Very early records, say 1750s. I need help with some land deeds I have found. I know my ancestor purchased land in Frederick Co Va 1762, then it was Dunmore, it was Shenaodoah when he sold it in 1787. but now in Dunmore records I have found where he sold some land in 1753, and it says he was from Augusta Co Va. Says land was surveyed in Dec 1753. Mentions land where he now lives......and it sounds like the same land near Woodstock Va - but how could that be Augusta Co? I need help with when the various counties had court houses where land could be recorded, etc. As you can tell, I am very confused right now. Mary [email protected]
