I am researching the Middleton family in Shenandoah Co. and have hit a dead end. I am seeking info on a Preston Middleton who married a Pheobe Morris. They had at least a son, John W. Middleton (b. 1839) who married Lucy Ellen Hanson in 1859, and a daughter, Sarah J. Middleton who married Lucy Hanson's brother. So far, I have found Preston Middleton's name as: Preston, Prestley, Risley, and Westly. All the databases I find, go by the spelling I put in and I haven't found him yet. I would especially like to find Preston's parents and siblings. I believe Preston may have died before 1859 because on the 1859 marriage of John W., there is a Jacob Morris who signed for John W. to get married. If anyone has info on the parents of William Hanson and his wife, Nancy Moore, I would appreciate help on them, also. William and Nancy were the parents of Lucy Ellen Hanson Middleton. Thanks, Linda Bowman [email protected]
Hello, I'm relatively new to the Virginia email lists. I've signed up to several lists, as are many of you I'm sure. That being the case, I apologize in advance to those of you who will be getting duplicates. We have concentrated our search primarily in Patrick and Giles Counties because our earliest known ancestor, John (Jr.) was married in Patrick and lived there after marriage. Many of the subsequent generations lived in Giles County. Considering the many boundary changes that have occurred over the years, and the fact that John (Jr.?) may not have originally been from Patrick County, we thought it might be necessary to expand our queries as we haven't been having any success in verifying any of John (Jr.s?) ancestors. John's parents are believed to have been John Clark Sr. and Sarah or Susannah, last name unknown. John may have had a sister named Elizabeth born n the 1770's and a brother named William also born in the 1770's. Listed below is John (Jr's?) children and their spouses. John Clark (Jr.?) born abt 1790 & Elizabeth Wright born abt mid 1790's Patrick County Va. This sounded like a very interesting story, and having tried to find some Hessians serving with General George Roger Clark, your Shenandoah native who was so active in the Illionois country during the AmRev., I have been supplied with some material by other historians. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I found the name Warnick/Wernick between those who served with General Clark, and of course, the name of General Steuben cannot be found in Clark's little army neither. Perhaps if you write to the Indiana Historical Bureau, you could get the information you require, mailto:[email protected] this Bureau has been very helpful to me. Sorry taht I cannot do more at this point in time. Can anyone help me find who Elizabeth married. She was born about 1745-1765 to Conrad and Maria Goessel Ailshite/Ailshire/Aleshire. Her siblings were Benedict Clifford, Coonrod, Henry, John Conrad, Jacob, Sarah, Christian, Peter and Michael. Her father was born in Prussia and died in Shenandoah County. Thanks for any help. Having just subscribed to your Digest version, which means I don't get your individual messages, but several of them all bundled up, I did get the welcome message, which was missing any mentioning of how to access your mail list archives. But I did find them anyway, and found some interesting postings, and of course, hope to find many more in the future. In the case you are not aware of the fact, that the beautiful Shenandoah Valley has been a favourite place of settlement for Hessian soldiers of the American Revolution, and in fact, was a hiding place for them after they deserted from their troops or escaped from the prison camps in Charlottesville and Winchester. It stands to reason that today's family historians run into a brickwall trying to find the origin of a man who had suddenly appeared in church records or censuses around the AmRev time. He may have been one of those Hessian soldiers seeking refuge among the other Germans who had settled in the Valley. I am glad I found your mail-list and will monitor for Hessian names. Hello, There was a Germanic community 1750s-1760s established between Straburg and Woodstock along the North Fork. Many were of the sect Sabbatarians. In 1764, Indian raids killed some and drove the remainder into the area known as the Sandy Hook and thence up to Ephrata PA. Seeking any information on names of the settlers who were killed. Thanks. Louie

Can anybody tell me the maiden name (with a source) of Henrietta Williams, wife of James, shown here in the 1860 Bath co VA census? They were probably married in late 1850 or 1851, since James was with his mother Nancy in the 1850 Bath census and their first child is 9 in 1860. I have checked the following counties for a marriage record: Augusta, Alleghany, Bath, Greenbrier, Highland, Nelson, Pocahontas, Rockbridge, Rockingham, CD 229 (VA Marriage Index). I will also send this to the WILLIAMS-L list. James Williams 31 m wagonmaker, R=300, P=100 Henrietta 34 f William H. 9 m Mary J. 7 f Ella V. 4 f Ira L. 2 m I theorize that she is Henrietta Criser/Critzer, d/o Henry & Polly, because that's the only Henrietta of the right age in the 1850 Bath census and Henry lives only 5 houses away from them in 1860, but this is weak evidence. I'm not researching the Williams family otherwise; this is for my 1860 Bath census annotation project. Thanks for any clues, Holly ------------------- Holly Cochran email: [email protected] Hollyhock Press (publisher of Bath co VA area books) http://id.mind.net/~cochran/hollyhock/
