They resided on Holman's Creek from at least 1773 to at least 1783. By 1787 they were on Long Meadows Creek in Rockingham Co., Va. They had 10 child: Peter b. 1772 VA, m. Mary Magdalene Eavy, dau. of Peter Eavy; George b. 1777, m. Anne (Nancy) Callihan; Mary m. 1793 to Michael Fred or Freed; Elizabeth b. 1782, m. Andrew Spitzer; John b. 1784-1790, m. Susan Bare, dau. of John Bare; Mathias, Jr. b. 1786 m. Mary Coffman b. 1793' Jacob b. abt 1788 m. Barbara Miley, dau. of Henry Miley; Sarah b. 1790, m. Hello List, I am thrilled to have found this list...(quite by surprise and accident)...I am hopeful this list covers the area of Shenandoah, PA. I am researching the family of GEORGE BUTKUS and CATHERINE (WHITE) BUTKUS. I know they were Polish speaking immigrants from Lithuania/Russia. I know they had a daughter named Ella BUTKUS on 24 April 1893 in Shenandoah, PA and that George was a coalminer. I have none of that verified...but have some papers indicating it's probably true as written. i.e. parents names on Ella's (later called Eleanor Margaret)SS application after seperating from her first husband. A census notation in 1920 that Ella's parents were Polish speaking and immigrated from Russia. I have been unable to find Ella's birth records in Schuylkill County as their records began in 1894. I believe the family was Catholic but St. George's Church does not have records and I never received a reply from St. Casmir's or St. Stanislaus. The coal miner's union did not keep records back that early. Can anyone suggest anywhere I might check for birth records for Ella BUTKUS...or any other records for this family to verify their residence in PA in the late 1890's? With Jonas in Tennessee and Calvin, Charles and James all dead, Emanuel would have been the eldest available son, likely the one to care for his father's estate. Perhaps the property in question was the estate. "Anna" may be his sister Ann Rebecca. The mother, Rebecca, evidently lived with Richard and Rhoda after her husband's death. If anyone has access to "Shenandoah Men in Gray", a two-volume series that gives information on Shenandoah County's Confederate veterans, I understand that it sometimes gives parents' vitals, marriage record, etc. I am trying to confirm and document the ancestry and descent of my godson's forebear, Isaiah BOWMAN (1838-1919), and would appreciate a lookup. Isaiah BOWMAN was born 28 September 1838 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He served as a Private in Co. E and Co. C, 2nd Virginia Infantry in the WBTS for 1862-1865. He died 30 May 1919, and is buried in the Keller Cemetery, Shenandoah County. Below is a descendants chart for Isaiah BOWMAN's family.
