Hello to all Shenandoah list subscribers. I would like to thank you all who gave me the answers to my question about Winchester. It is now cristal clear that Winchester belongs to the Frederick County of Virginia, and not to the Shenandoah County. I now could find my way there from Canada blind folded and without map. Thanks again, you have been very helpful, John :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > >I have got the book here "A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia, > >by John W. John, to answer your question, yes, Winchester is in the Shenandoah Valley. Shenandoah Valley of Virginia lis between the Blue Ridge on the est, and the first ranges of the Alleghenies on the west. It includes teh countys of : Agusta, Rochingham, Shenandoah, Page, Warren, Frederick, and Clark. The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is but a small part of the Applachian Valley that runs from Newfoundland to Alabama. The Shenandoah Valley as a whole, extends from Harper's Ferry south into Tennessee. Hope htis helps, Ken

I just wonder whether or not there is a connection. Cheers, John.
I am looking for obituaries for William Franklin WILLIS (d. 8 April 1907 near Chester Gap, Rappahannock County, VA) and for his wife, Mary Catherine MILLER Willis (d. 14 Dec 1923 Chester Gap, Rappahannock County, VA). What I know about them is set out in the descendants chart below. I am also interested in finding WFW's burial place, said to be "on the old Kerns place in "Bean Hollow" (near Reager) in Rappahannock County, Virginia." What newspapers might have published obituaries in the early 20th century in Front Royal? Any help would be greatly appreciated. He served with the Sixth Regiment, Virginia Cavalry, in the War Between the States, under the command of Colonel Thomas Flournoy, which was part of Brigadier General J.E.B. Stuart's Northern Virgina Cavalry. He was captured, and paroled 15 June 1865 at Winchester, Virginia. According to family tradition, he had a long beard, and looked somewhat raffish. His record of parole states that he was 37 years old, 5'10" in height, brown complexion, brown hair, grey eyes. In addition to the eleven children that Mary Catherine MILLER Willis bore him, he also had three other children (Elizabeth "Fanny", Jim and Mary) from an earlier marriage; they are listed with him in the 1860 Census, in which he is listed as having personal property of $387. He was buried on the old Kerns place in "Bean Hollow" (near Reager) in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Pension applications filed by William Franklin WILLIS and also his widow, Mary Catherine MILLER Willis, are on microfilm at the Virginia State Archives. Noting the recent discussion of Beavers...I have a Judy Beaver who appeared out of nowhere in the 1860 Bath county census at age 80. She lives between James & Henrietta Williams and John & Ellen Groves; it's possible that either of these women are her daughters, or may be completely unrelated. Does anybody have a Judy/Judith married to a Beaver, born about 1780, or an unmarried Judy Beaver of the same age? I have searched the 1850 VA census without finding her so far. thanks for any help, Holly
I note that you have a Bear/Kauffman connection: Jacob KAUFFMAN m. bef. 1792 to Catharine BEAR, dau. of Hans Heinrich BEER of Coventry Twp., Chester Co., PA. Jacob KAUFFMAN died before 1801 when his widow Catharine m. Michael KRAUSS. A famous member of the Pennsylvania BEAR family is Maria Eva BEAR Zirkle Ottinger. I'm wondering if she might be a sister or cousin to your Mary Elizabetha (Marie Elizabeth) BEAR Stickel. Here is some information on Maria Eva BEAR Zirkle Ottinger: In America, the name Zirkle first appears in 1725 when Ludowick ZIRKLE came to Philadelphia from Itlingen, near Heidelberg, Germany where he was born on 9 October 1705. He apparently had been married prior to coming to America, as he mentions a son by his first marriage in his will. It is estimated that he and Maria Eva BEAR were married about 1731 or 1732, as their first child was born in 1733. He wrote his Will on 22 October 1746 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and it was probated 17 January 1747. "Ludwig" or "Lewis" in America was a farmer and land owner, as well as a saddler. He was naturalized 19 May 1739 in Philadelphia. He gave an acre of land to the Indianfield (Little Sion) Lutheran Church at Telford several years before he died. His note reads: "Be it know that I, Lodowick Zirkle, in Franconia township that long time agoe have given and bequeathed one acre of land for the use of the prober Lutheran church where the congreagation have build upon one church. she is to have and to hold said described so long as soon a moon a shining for no other use then for the said prober Evangilly Lutheran Church and have a Deed, being in Franconia township the 28th day 8bris, 1746." A transcription of his brief will is as follows: "I being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks being given to God. Wife, Maria Eva to have all of my estate, both real and personalties till my youngest child 12 years old. After my decease my loving executors after named is to have full power to sell all of my real estate and personalties if he find necessary. Maria Eva my loving wife is to have the furth of all, the two furths among my children in equal share except my oldest son George Henry is to have for his portion 25 pounds. Weil hewend 4 years before his each to learn a Treath to be paid when he hath set up for him self. If my wife married then all of my estate to be sold by my executors, or trusty friend Peter Snider and well beloved wife Maria Eva, executors. Ludwig died and Maria Eva BEAR Zirkle married Christopher OTTINGER, but he is dead by 1750. Maria Eva moves with her daughters and five sons to a place called "The Forest" now Forestville, VA. Thus began the Family Zirkle in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Please let me know if you see a fit here. Can anyone look up Michael Krouse/Krauss in the 1810 census of Shenandoah Co., VA for me? In the event that he had died by 1810 (he was living in Shenandoah Co. in 1808), the listing might be under Catharine Krouse/Krauss. Thanks in advance. Marc Archer

M Archer - I am a Bieber/Beaver descendant. My emigrant ancestor was Johannes Bieber b. ca. 1695 in Hirschland Germany who died 3 Oct. 1748 in Berks Co, Maxatawny Twp, PA. His son Conrad was born ca 1738 in Berks Co. PA and died before 1783 in Luray VA. Conrad married Mary Kneissley ca 1755. Conrad and Mary's daughter Mary Beaver married Abraham Mauck 18 Sep 1787 at Woodstock VA by Rev. John Koontz-Primitive Baptist Minister. Most of my Beaver information came from The History And Genealogy of the BIEBER-BEAVER FAMILY by Rev. I. M. Beaver copyright 1939. I found Mathias Beaver of Virginia in the book. On page 941 he says: "Mathias Beaver was the great-grandfather of Mrs. O. C. Roth, 1709 E Weber Road, Columbus, O. She says Mathias Beaver was born in Germany and came to Virginia as a young man, married a woman by the name of Mary ___. From Harry A. Beaver, a grandson living at Groveport, O (1938) we learn that Mathias Beaver married a German girl by the name of Coffman. In our genealogical notes on the Beaver family in Virginia, page 648, we learn that Mathias was the head of a family and that Mary Beaver, wife of Mathias, was received for baptism, etc., etc. Sept. 17, 1814, and that Mathias Beaver owned 386 acres of land in Virginia; and since other members of the Beaver family married into the Coffman family of Virginia, the compiler is of the opinion that the above Mathias Beaver married Mary Coffman in Virginia. That he resided in Virginia for some years and later moved to Illinois, where he and his wife died. Issue 7 children, viz. Benjamin, Reuben, Nancy, Harriet, Sarah, Katie and Lena Beaver." The children's names and dates don't match yours. Briefly they are: Benjamin Beaver b 11 Jan 1815 in Rockingham Co., Va. d 19 July 1903 m 22 Sep 1844 to Hannah Koch of Adelphi O. - 9 children Reuben E. Beaver b ? d? aged 32 years. His son Harry A. Beaver claims Mathias came home from Civil War and only lived a short time after Nancy Beaver m. Klar. She raised her family in Illinois Harriet Beaver m. Holt. Lived in Illinois Sarah Beaver m. Yontis. Lived in Illinois Katie Beaver m Pontius, lived in Pickaway Co., O. Lena Beaver - no record. On page 648 I. M. Beaver mentions: [Heads of families in 1785 of territory centering around the site of Luray, Va. - by Edwin Young] ... "(From a list of Muster Fines in the 58th Regt. of Militia in Rockingham Co. Va. for the year 1816) Mathias Beaver Michael Beaver "Abstract of Church Records, Brook's Gap: 'Mary Beaver, wife of Mathias, was received for baptism appointed com - at the union meeting to be holden at our meeting house the last Saturday and Sunday in next month October (Sept. 17, 1814) and our next business meeting to be held at said Matthias Beaver's homeon Linville Creek" "Landowners in the year 1789 List - by Reuben Moore, Commissioner 8th Dist. Thanks to all who have responded with helpful hints on who this Catherine was. George Miller married Catherine Funkhouser, George's parents were George Miller and Catherine??? It seems that this was Catherine Lambert who married George Miller (1818) and later married Lewis Pearsh (Persee/Pearch/Bearsh), 1837. In Amy Gilreath's Will Abstract Book, page 13, the will of Lewis Bearsh mentions his wife, formerly Catharine Miller and her children. My thanks to Kelly, the marriage look-up lady on Alley's site for the information about the marriage of Lewis Persee to Cathrine Miller, a widow. Although there may be some holes in this theory, I think it's solid enough to buy it. Thanks again, Rick
