hi, Someone on this list or the Shen. List was working on Fielding Lewis family. of Fredericksburg, Va. Fielding Lewis wife was the sister of George Washington. I lost your e-mail. In today's paper they have article about Betty grave in Culpeper Co. Va. being in a field. If you get in contact to with me, I'll get the article to you. Thanks, Esther
Just returned from Augusta County Virginia and wish to share some of my adventure. We stayed just outside of Staunton on Hwy. 250 off I-81 at the Sleep Inn Hotel. It just opened in January and was very nice. Rates were $58.00 plus tax. Across the Hwy. was a great restaurant named "Mrs. Rowe's." I had the best of dinning there and I highly recommend this Inn which is family owned and operated for the last fifty years. Great atmosphere and fine southern cooking.(Good collard greens and biscuits.) We visited the Staunton Court House and Library with minor success. Visited the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church in Fishersville where my ggg grandparents were married in 1796. Found the home of my gggg granduncle Zechariah Johnston built in 1730 near Barren Ridge and the home he built in Lexington in 1797. We visited Zechariah's grave site in The Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington and also the grave site of Andrew Wallace and his wife Jane Blair. Will share pictures that we took of the above with those of a personal concern. Just around the corner where we stayed is a "Frontier Culture Museum" of four living and working farms staffed to answer all questions. One farm house was a Scotch/Irish thatched roof building from Ulster rebuilt on location. The others were German, English, and American. Truly a must if you are in the area. Researching Andrew WALLACE and his wife Margaret WALLACE nee CALBREATH. Still looking for the parents of Andrew. James Wm. Wallace
Fellow Shenvalley Folks/Descendants/Adoptees: In case you haven't seen it, there are new lists on www.ancestry.com including one for Rockingham County birth records, 1853-56. Under heading FREE SEARCHES, click on new databases. Rockingham County birth records now run from 1853-1896 on the free lists. Click on free lists and go to vital records to find them. There are also Virginia marriages on the free list. A hearty second to the Wallaces recommendation of Rowes (rhymes with bow-wow and not row your boat) Restaurant in Staunton VA. This is among the best Shenandoah Valley food and I should know - I grew up there. We try to always eat at this restaurant on each trip. It is just off I-81 on Rt. 250 and is well marked from the interstate. Try not to get there at early meal time. Terry Helsley
It beats me why anybody would repeat the whole shebang of trash and I have to scroll through miles of garbage when reading the Digest version of our list. Please be considerate and <snip> the trash. John

This is what is known as an "urban legend". The story has NO basis in fact and is propagated to generate as much hysteria and alarm as possible. This particular story has been making the rounds for the past 24 months. There are variations of the same story, all culminating in the same end that have been circulating since AIDS was recognized as a viral infection. "John Portlock was a white baby that the soldiers found in an Indian camp. They took him to a fort called Lock Port. They reversed the name and called him John Portlock. I always thought it was my Great Grandfather, but as I located information on him, I realized that this was not true. Later, when I was unable to find information on his grandfather, John Portlock, I wondered if he was the baby found in the Indian Camp." Our Ancestor, John Portlock's Rev. War Pension App. states that he was born in Shenandoah. We haven't found a Portlock family in the area in 1765, (his birth date), although there are a lot of Portlocks in Norfolk, VA. Portlock is an established name in the Norfolk area. Our question -- Is there, or has there ever been, a Lock Port up in the Shenandoah Valley. If so, it may give credence to this story. I think a lot of people went on a rampage assuming they were stolen. By the time I went to eBay's site, the particular ones blasted across the genealogy lists were taken off. So, I don't know if they were stolen or improperly acquired, or not. IF SO, then those sellers need to be prosecuted (but by the FBI? hmmm). Other markers were still there at eBay for sale, though. I looked at one or two, and the description of them stated that they had been replaced in cemetery restorations or when moving a cemetery. But gee whiz, when in history didn't people destroy or steal markers? And when haven't damaged or deteriorated markers been replaced? I do agree that selling such replaced stones or markers is tacky (maybe not illegal though), and may very well lead to thefts for sales of them. Rick

Oops - Winchester is NOT part of Shenandoah County , which I believe was the original question. It is part of Frederick County, which is Shenandoah's parent county. However, Winchester is part of the Shenandoah Valley, as the other posted replies have stated. -----Original Message----- From: John Helmut Merz <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, April 30, 1999 4:32 PM Subject: Help wanted for SHENANDOAH County. >I have got the book here "A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia, >by John W. I received this message from the person who still has the marker up for auction. I think we made an impact. Thank you for your concern and letting me use the list for this purpose. Keep it up. To ALL: All of us need to contact e-bay and protest this kind of auction. They are selling our ancestors cemetery markers! This is not an appropriate auction item! If this gets to be a trend as a collectable none of our ancestors will be at rest under their hard earned recognition of service. Protest to e-bay! Tell them NO WAY! If we as a community speak up we may be able to slow this cemetery robbery down. See item for sale! This one is still available: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=96875810 others down at bottom of text for viewing also. It makes me want to cry. Send this on to those you think would care enough to protest this act of desecration. Sorry to all list owners if this breaks any of your posting rules. But it is genealogy related. If anyone must comment on this to anyone. Do it to e-bay! Kathy Busby The illusion that we are separate from one another is an optical delusion of our consciousness. -Albert Einstein -----Original Message----- From: Carolyn Feroben [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, May 03, 1999 12:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Stolen Tombstones for Sale? -----Original Message----- From: Sue Koller [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, May 03, 1999 11:10 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [VAROCKIN-L] Its a small world/ Weed-Walker-Finley-Shaver Maybe some of you have had this same experience.(or similar) While working on my family line and getting no new information (Shaver/Shafer), I decided to work on my Husband's mothers line (Weed) only because this seemed pretty easy in that there was already some information and I knew they came from Stamford CT, where incidentally we are planing to move shortly. Anyway, I started to look into the Weed family and found a Shaver connection to my Weed family, not unusual Shaver is a pretty common name. But now I find that the Weed family also is in LaSalle County IL, where my Shaver's ended up, and that (specifically) Edmund Weed, came from VA, possibly Rockingham Co., VA, where his wife Keziah Walker came from. (Rockinigham is where I do extensive research on my Shaver line) so, If someone has information on Edmund Weed's marriage to Keziah Walker-daughter of David Walker, please let me know. I found from the book "Ottawa Old and New" a book on the history of Ottawa of LaSalle County Ill, that Dr. David Walker came to LaSalle County from Rockingham in 1826 he was accompanied by his wife Phoebe (Finley) Walker. Any other information on this Weed family, especially with a connection to the Weed's of Stamford, would be greatly appreciated. I hope that this accounting is understandable. In doing research for over 4 years now I have found many coincidences, but this one really threw me, I'm connected to my husbands family long before we we're married and vise-versa, but that's another story. Happy Hunting Sue K.
