Looking for information on Hartwell Sawyers, b. 1779 in NC. He lived most of his life in Washington Co. VA and Sullivan Co. TN. He is first found on the 1806 Washington Co. VA Tax List as Hartwell Sawyer, alias Bell. He is next found on the 1810 Washington Co. VA Census, 1830 Sullivan Co. TN Census, 1840 Washington Co. VA Census, and the 1850 Sullivan Co. TN Census. He was probably in Sullivan Co. TN in 1820. He died in the 1850's in probably Sullivan Co. TN. He was married at least 2 times, the first unknown, the second to a Mary Sawyer. Family tradition states that all she had to do was add an S at the end of her name. Their kinship, if any, is unknown. It is not known for sure how many children either of the wives had. It is believed that Mary Sawyer traveled to Clinton Co. KY in the 1850's with one of her sons, Leander McChesney Sawyers and his young family. Hartwell Sawyers had the following children, most of whom, little is known about. They may have died young or at childbirth, or married and/or migrated westward somewhere. The boys that we know about were: John (1810), Leander McChesney (1819) and William (1829). Leander McChesney Sawyers is my line and he migrated west to Clinton Co. KY in 1853. The girls were: Nancy (1815) who married Isaac Sells around 1837 in Sullivan Co. TN; Susan (1816), and Catherine (1822). It is believed that Nancy (1815) was the mother of John C. Sells (1837) and Susan Rebecca Sells (1845) all of Sullivan Co. TN. The McChesney connection is unknown but believed to be through a Sawyer and McChesney marriage, possibly one of Hartwell's wives. Susan Rebecca Sells (1845) married Henry M. Rosenbaum in 1865 in Sullivan Co. TN. The alias Bell connection of Hartwell Sawyer on the 1806 Washington Co. VA Tax List may suggest he was born to a Bell woman and fathered by a Sawyer man. This is just a theory at this time. Where in NC Hartwell Sawyers was born is also unknown and it is unknown if he connects back to coastal NC where many Sawyer families settled or whether he may have been from some of the southwest VA Sawyers or Sayers families. His surname is found spelled many different ways throughout several documents: Sawyers, Sawyer, Sayers, Sayer, Sawer and his first name is found spelled: Hartwell, Harwell, Harvell, and Hatwell. There is a David Sawyers found in a John Beatie will from Washington Co. VA in 1790. I believe this may be the same David Sawyers found in 1800 in, I believe, Smyth Co. VA? There are also many Sayers families up toward Augusta Co. VA around the mid-1700's and several Sawyers and Sayers scattered throughout some of the southwest VA counties in the early 1800's. Seems to be some Salyer/Salyers families up toward Russell and Scott counties in VA, also, about this timeframe. If you go west toward Lexington, KY (Fayette County), the name Sayre comes up. Lewis Sayers/Sawyers in found in Washington Co. VA around 1840, then a similar name, Lewis Sayre is found in Fayette Co. KY about that time. If there is a connection, it is unknown. I would like to correspond with anyone who may be researching the Sawyer, Sawyers, Sayer, Sayers, Sayre, Sayres, Sawers, and even Salyer and Salyers surnames. I have tried these names on the rootsweb surname list and haven't come up with much. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My line runs through Hartwell Sawyer to Leander McChesney Sawyers (1819) who married Sarah Frances "Frankey" Booher in 1844, in probably Sullivan Co. TN. She was the daughter of Frederick Booher, a son of John Booher, one of the sons of John Baltes Bucher of PA. Leander's son Frederick Hartwell Sawyers (1845) to his son Alfred Homer Sawyers (1898) came to Clinton Co. KY in 1853 with Hartwell's last wife, Mary Sawyer. Thanks, Kevin Miller

I am researching the full GOSNEY family in the hopes I can locate my g.g.grandfather - William Gosney's parents. My William was born in VA in 1788. Big state at that time. First located in Clermont Co., OH when married and owned land. Later moved to KY. Please look thru your databases and any mention of GOSNEY, I would love to hear about. They do show up in the most remote areas. Name also spelled GOSNAY / GAUSNEY / GAWSNEY. May all of your brick walls come tumbling down. Beth Shields (FL) grand daughter of a Gosney.

I have a gg-grandfather named Henry H. Teaford. I can't help but feel that there must be a link between him and a Henry Hileman Teaford I read about on the "Teafords of America" page. The Teafords in our family came from VA and settled in Orange County, Indiana. Our Henry was born 24 Feb 1829 and it is believed that his father was a Jacob Teaford. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
Hi there, Thought this might be of help to someone. I always try to post all original documents I find to a list, so, someone else can make use of the information as well. If we all pitch in, it could be awesome what we can have on our lists. Remember; these lists are all archived now, so the data waits there for whoever might need it in the future. Let me give you an example of what happened to me. I had found some information on a surname I was researching, I couldn't use it, but, posted it to the appropriate list, later when I wanted to check it again, I had mis-placed it, but, remembering I had posted it to a list, I simply went to the archive and retrieved it. 1850 Census Roll 976 page 60 Shanadoah Co. I am looking for any information on any of the following people. I am related distantly to these people, but do not descend from them. I would bet that these were all Swiss Germans, with the exception of Mordecai Lewis. I know the Rinkers were, and am pretty sure the Showmans and Helsleys were too. Thank you, Rick - - - - George Jacob ZEIGLER (naturalized 10 Apr 1760 in PA, d. 1 Jun 1764 at Narrow Creek Passage, Shenandoah Co VA). The daughters of George Jacob Zeigler were: 1. George Jacob Zeigler received a land grant from Lord Proprietor Fairfax in Old Frederick Co VA on 1 Aug 1762. His daughters sold their 300 acre portion of that land to George GRANDSTAFF Sr. on 25 Aug 1784. John and Margaret {Zeigler} Morrow bought back 100 acres of that land on 11 Jul 1790. George Jacob Zeigler died in an Indian attack at Narrow Creek Passage, where 32 people were either killed or captured. Stephanus Schauman was listed as attending the Reformed Zion-Pine Church in 1799. On 9 Dec 1811, Stephen and Susan {Zeigler} Showman sold 150 acres to Jacob RINKER. Stephen Showman and Jacob Rinker were witnesses to the codicil, dated 3 Dec 1813, to the will of Jacob HELSLEY of Shenandoah Co., Virginia. Stephen and Susannah {Zeigler} Schauman were the godparents of Mosses HOTZEN (born 20 Dec 1810). Little Mosses was the son of Richert and Catharina {--?--} HOTZEN. Elizabeth {--?--} Fadely was a widow when she married Stephen Showman. Stephen's will was dated 21 Mar 1823, and proven 13 Oct 1823 in Shenandoah Co.
I received this information from Wayne Greene. Wayne is a look-up for the Greene County, PA GenWeb page. I am posting this information with his consent. Rick Monroe * * * * * Here's some info for your records. The Virginia Strosniders and the Greene County, Pa Strosniders are related. There was a Johannes Frederick Strohschneider who married 1760 in Bucks Co., Pa to Catharine Guth. They had about 10 children. Frederick Strosnider later moved to Frederick Co., VA and raised his family there. He later moved to Greene Co., Pa where he died on December 1810. He left a will naming all his children. One of his sons Michael Strosnider married Hannah Rudolph and he had a large family of about 14 children and most all of them stayed behind in Virginia. Your Benjamin Strosnider was the son of Michael Strosnider born circa. 1765 in Bucks Co., Pa and married 6 Jan 1786 in Frederick Co., VA to Hannah Rudolph (daughter of Thomas Rudolph). Michael's will was probated 13 Dec 1824 in Woodstock, VA. Land in Greene County, Pa. was left to Michael by his father and was sold by him (Michael) to his daughter Sarah and her husband Thomas Hall. Hi all, I need info on Phillip Bowyer who applied for RW pension at age 78 in 1832, was living in Shenandoah County with son Michael, but who was consent on Anna Boyers/ Bowyers marriage bond in 1808 in Rockingham Co. Also, William Bowyer, who owned land in Augusta Co., and property, in Staunton from about 1760-1830, son Michael Bowyer, maybe an attorney, owned land in Augusta Co., also Botetourt and Rockingham counties late 1700's. Also John Bowyer who owned land in several counties in Shenandoah and all of these men were witnesses, testees, sureties, etc. in and out of August Co. court from 1750 through 1830, etc. Also Luke Bowyer, who apparently was residing in Botetourt Co. in 1800, but who also was a surety on a marriage bond in Augusta Co. in the last 1790's. He also is shown taking title to some land in Augusta Co. in the late 1790s. Also, wherever the McDowells were, Samuel, James, etc., so were the Bowyers. Any information on these folk would be very much appreciated. Thanks. gail carter [email protected]
