The work of Mildred Campbell Whitaker is not higly regarded as her theory about the origins of Sheltons, Skeltons, Chiltons and Sheldons has been proven false -- that is, all persons bearing those surnames in Colonial Virginia were the same family with the different spellings arising because so few people were literate in the 1600s and early 1700s. A genealogy DNA database of persons with those surnames has proven these are separate family lines, as none of the Shelton DNA tests match Skelton and Chilton.
