Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wNHBAIB/2976.2.1 Message Board Post: I assume you are referring to the following tests which carry surname of "Shelton" and the explanation is that these are persons some of whom came from a line of Chiltons out of Prince William County, Virginia, into Pittsylvania County, VA, as "Chilton" which is the surname they had in Prince William County and which their father carried when he moved from his family home in Lancaster County, VA, to Prince William County. After the move into Pittsylvania County, this family of Chiltons gradually had the spelling of their surname changed to "Shelton" on the Pittsylvania County records. This occured from the year 1768 when they purchased land in Pittsylvania County in the surname of "Chilton" through the years until by about 1800 they were recorded in all the records with the surname spelled "Shelton". They are Chiltons, not Sheltons -- although those of us who are Sheltons would be proud to claim them as a branch of our line.
