My Sheltons came out of Sevier Co., TN. They first showed up as they were getting married there. My Ggrandfather was Benjamin J. Shelton (b. either 1852 or 1861), his sister Margaret (b. btw 1861 and 1865) and their brother William M. (b. July 4, 1865) In two places, my ggf shows that he was born in GA, however in one place he states TN. I do know that he, his brother, and a friend Sand Hill were living with a Margaret Canup (Cannup, Canupp) at one time. She was Indian. In trying to connect with her family, a gentleman told me that she was too poor to hire any one to help on her farm or to just take in any one, so he felf that they may have been grandchildren. My ggf moved to Spartenburg with his second family before he died. We did find where his son Bruce died in the next county over a few years ago. Have not been able to locate the three daughters. Can find no proof of any kind before they showed up in Sevier Co. One of my 2nd, cousins said that she heard that when Benjamin had to leave NC (why in NC when born in either TN or GA?) that he came to a river. When he wanted the ferryman to take him over that night, the ferryman refused so he killed him and took the ferry over hisself. I have not been able to find any proof of that family story either. Sometimes I wonder if they changed their names for some reason. I have been wanting to get back in touch with my 2nd. cousin. She has a brother that would be perfect for the DNA test. I know the trouble that I have had with my dead end, so I wish you the best of luck. Ruth Dunlap Brackett.
