I am not related to the Shelton family, and have only recently begun the search and right off the bat I saw mistakes and inconsistencies in what I had found. Such as, I came across two dates for Maj. Thos. Shelton's death- one source listed that he died at 75 years, the other had him living until he was 103! Since my first post on this subject, I have been able to find out that there is a small slave graveyard at Rural Plains- if I heard correctly there are no headstones, only depressions in the ground- my source on this is the National Parks Service who now own the house and are preparing to open it soon for tours. My hope was to find amongst the family papers and lore an idea where John and Eleanor Parks Shelton are buried, so far I have not found it. Does any one have a month and day for Sarah Shelton Henry's birth? Since she was listed as being two years younger than P. Henry the year is easy to figure- it's the month and day we are hoping to find. Scotchtown will soon be planting a tree to replace one that had to be cut down, and we had all wondered when Sarah's birthday might be so to have a small ceremony in her honor. Again let me thank you for the information you gave on the Sheltons of Rural Plains. You have helped me to be able to enrich our tours with clear information on a very old and important family in Hanover County history. I hope all Sheltons will come to Hanover and visit Scotchtown, we would love to meet you and show you the house! All the best.
