Living with Rebecca, James, F. G.(?), and two more I cant read. Both of his parents are shown as foreign born. Samuel Shelton was born in Tenn., but the only wife I know of was Prudence Miller. I don't know when their marriage was so it could be that Sam had an earlier wife. I don't remember the story of the slander suit. I have no knowledge of Jessie being the son of Samuel Shelton. In fact I have speculated that he is the son of one James Shelton. That James is the father of Jessie is pure speculation. There is a James Shelton living in St John's Twp, Franklin Co, Missouri, in the 1830 Census. The following people are with him: 1 male under 5, 1 male between 5 and 10yrs, 1 male between 10 and 15, 1 male between 30 and 40, 1 male between 50 and 60, 1 female under 5, 1 female between 5 and 10, 1 female between 10 and 15, 1 female between 15 and 20, 1 female between 20 and 30. This is could easily be Jessie Shelton's father and mother. It may interest you to know that Samuel and Prudence Shelton are buried on the old Richardson Cemetery near New Haven, MO. Three of the children of Winchester L. Shelton are also buried there. Winchester was the youngest son of Samuel and Prudence. A disaster seems to have struck the Richardson family around 1850 leaving only the young people. The Shelton family must have purchased the land after that. After the civil war, Nathan Richardson married Elizabeth Elmira Shelton. Nathan's twin sister, Elizabeth Eden Richardson married Robert Bruce Shelton. So...Elizabeth Richardson became Elizabeth Shelton, and Elizabeth Shelton became Elizabeth Richardson. Confused? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
