Currently there are 2 different DNA projects going on. One is mainly by FamilyTreeDNA for those of us trying to trace our families using alleles (markers) and the other is called the Genographic Project by National Geographic and they are trying to trace historical human migration using haplogroups. The Genographic Project is between National Geographic and IBM and is only a five-year research partnership . It started March 2005. Their test is only for the first 12 markers. Both are using the same testing lab in Tucson and with one test you can join the other project. If you test with the Genographic Project you can then join one of our projects for free. If you have already tested with FamilyTreeDNA you can have your results sent to the Genographic Project for $15. There is a box to the right of your name that says "join." Besides testers who are not interested in sharing their information, I have had a few people from the Genographic Project join our Shelton/Skelton/Sheldon/Chilton project. These people are not necessarily interested in tracing their immediate families. I write to each one as they transfer in, but so far none has taken me up to join the testers group which has been disappointing.
