This book can only be used if one has a sufficiently wide background in Shelton genealogy to weed out the erroneous parts. This is not a book to be used by a beginner. When Mrs. Whitaker published her theory on Shelton genealogy -- that all persons in the Colony of Virginia who were name Shelton, Chilton, Chelton and Skelton were actually Shelton because people didn't know how to spell their surname --- in the genealogy journal, The William & Mary Quarterly, the Chilton and Skelton families very quicky published information which discredited Mrs. Whitaker's work. The death knell of Mrs. Whitaker's theory/book is the Shelton-Chilton-Skelton DNA database, the results of which are posted on the Rootsweb Shelton Mailing List. Sheltons, Chiltons and Skeltons have submitted DNA tests and no Shelton line matches Chiltons or Skeltons. There are also a number of individual Shelton lines. If you want to check this out, the results for May have just been posted.
