He would've been the uncle of Thomas, not his father. Sorry for the mistake, I've fixed it now. A Cherokee connection would explain some of the same Sheltons being listed as white in one census & mulatto in another. I hadn't thought of that before. There was a Green Shelton (WWM, 70, pauper) next door to Martha J Shelton (Jane's daughter, I think) & her daughters in the 1880 census. Could he be Jane Shelton's brother?
