Was her father the same Thomas Shelton who was listed as "Thomas J 2yrs mulatto" in the Glascock Co. census of 1860? In the 1870 census "Thomas J 12yrs white" is living with "Mary Shelton 31yrs mulatto." Next door are some Howells. I'm pretty curious about the mixed-race aspect of these relationships because my grandfather, Asa Hadden, son of Callie Shelton & Fleming Hadden, always talked about there being "black blood" in our family, but no one knew if he was serious.
