Dear Dean, Like your Grandmother, my father, who grew up in Southern Illinois and had a Great-Grandmother with the maiden name of Shelton, always figured (and rather hoped, I think) that our line was connected to the Shelton Gang. Your information about Wm. Shelton b. 1796 in Pittsylvnia County Va. and died in Dickson County, Tn. would seen to indicate you are part of the Chilton/Shelton line.

I have Pictures of Shelton family members, I am not sure of connections tho., My next shelton beyond William S Shelton would be William P Shelton born about 1797 in Pittsylvania, va. married to Susannah Hurt 16 Aug 1821 in Todd Co Ky she died about 1852 in Ky Does this connect to you too? My mother always told me there were two Shelton family lines in SO IL ... and ours were not the gangsters (even though my grandfather would sometimes joke that we were!) - my direct line came from the MO Ozark area. On the Shelton surname message board, a few years back, a woman named Cathy Wayman posted the following information about the Shelton Gang Genealogy. Elizabeth Shelton Hill (daughter of Josiah Shelton and Nancy Ross) was on the 1880 census with her son Wiley W. Hill in Frankfort, Franklin Co., IL. Do we know of anymore of the Henderson and Hopkins County Shelton Gang that moved to that area? By 1900 his family had moved to Pomona, Jackson Co., IL.
