    3. For some reason, the below mentioned not excluded, we find a few union sympathizers from the McMinn area enlisting in Indiana.... I wonder why? Was it just that a group of them went there to enlist outside what was considered the 'south'. 3. Joyce, I'm in the process of reading a book on Andrew Johnson. Tennesse in the Cumberland and eastern counties were pro Union . Andrew Johnson was one of the TN US senators when we all went to war and very much against spliting the Union. The western counties especially around Memphis were in favor of leaving the Union. When TN withdrew from the Union, the TN governor sent troops into the eastern counties to round up Unionists to jail and force men into the Confederate Army.(pg 244-45) Those that were pro Union fled north to Ohio and Indiana and joined units there.. The book: The Yankee From Tennessee by Noel B. Gerson. Published 1960 Doubleday & Company, NY. Marie Reedy researching : Richard Shelton (SH-80) b. December 1779 Louisa County, VA d. 1842 Greensboro, Guilford Co, North Carolina mar.
