Richard married FRANCES BARNETT, b.1790 Louisa Co., VA - d.1849 Guilford Co., NC near Greensboro. According to family history Richard came to North Carolina as a young man but no specific year is known. Richard and Frances married in 1807, place not known. Richard and Frances were the parents of eleven children: 1. Ann Shelton m. Dr. William P. Young; 2. Frances Jones Barnett m. George W. Davis; 3. William Shelton m. Maria Thompson; 4. Joseph Shelton m. Nancy Gillespie; 5. Mary Shelton, died in childhood; 6. Elizabeth Shelton, died in childhood; 7. John Anthony Winston Shelton m. Mattie Cross; 8. Damaris L. Shelton m. John H. Chapman; 9. Samuel Richard Shelton m.a.Martha Campbell, b.Sallie B. Rutherford, c.Mary Clopton Bernard; 10. James Barnett Shelton m. M. V. Long; 11. Robert Shelton m. Maggie Harding. The name Winston is carried on thru several different children's lines and we think there must be a connection to the Winston family but we cannot find out who that would be.
