I don't know if I can help with your particular line of Sheltons, but am happy to share info on mine. Below is my line of descent in the Shelton family: (1) Ralph Shelton (b. ca 1685, England; d. aft. Mar. 1773, Middlesex Co., VA) --- date of actual birth is unknown; Ralph came to VA around 1785; he had close ties with Thomas Meriweather, who left land to Ralph in his will; no one knows for sure the maiden name of Ralph's wife, but many believe her name was Mary Crispen; Ralph's will was date Mar. 1733 and in that will he names sons Ralph, Thomas, and Crispen and a daughter, Elizabeth Davis; his wife Mary was one of the executors of his will (2) Crispen Shelton (b. Apr. 1, 1713, Middlesex Co., VA; d. Oct. 29, 1787 or 1794, Pittsylvania Co., VA) -- again, as with his father, only the first name of his wife is known -- Lettice --- and there has been much speculation as to her maiden name (and I would rather not open that "can of worms" here); Crispen died in Pittsylvania Co., VA where he and a number of his sons had settled (3) Lewis Shelton (b. ca 1734, prob. Middlesex Co., VA; d. shortly before June 26, 1794, Pendleton Co., SC) -- Lewis married a woman named Mary (I think she was a Taliaferro, but that is pure speculation on my part; nothing to back it up); Lewis served in Rev. War (received land grant in SC for his service); he was a Church of England lay minister who later converted to the Baptist denomination; before the Rev. he and several other Bapt. ministers in VA petitioned the House of Burgesses for the right to perform marriages in VA and their petition was granted; after the Rev. Lewis and his children moved to western SC where Lewis helped to establish one of the first Bapt. churches in that area; his will was filed on June 26, 1794 in Pendleton (now Anderson) Co., SC; his children are named in that will (4) Taliaferro Shelton (b. ca 1766, prob. Pittsylvania Co., VA; d. bef. Dec. 15, 1834, Blount Co., AL) --- Taliaferro was married at least twice, perhaps 3 times; the names of 2 wives are known, but if there was a 3rd marriage, her name is unknown; he was in SC with his father (also had land grants there for service in Rev.); he later moved (or the state line was redrawn) to Jackson Co., GA; at the time of his death (prob. in 1834) he was in Blount Co., AL and had minor children from his 3rd wife (5) Drury E. Shelton (b. ca 1810, Jackson Co., GA; d. ca 1848, Carroll Co., MS) --- Drury was married 3 times; I am descended from his first wife, Zilphey Corbin (b. 1815 to 1820, SC; d. bef. 1850, Carroll Co., MS), d/o William Blaine Corbin and Jane Sanders; Zilphey may have died in childbirth; Drury's marriage to Zilphey is in Carroll Co. records as are a number of land transactions in that county; not sure exactly when he died, but he disappears from the records after 1848 and in 1850 his son was living with William and Jane Corbin (6) Lewis W. Shelton (b. ca 1836, Carroll Co., MS; d. unknown) --- in 1850, at age 14, Lewis was in the household of his maternal grandparents (William & Jane Corbin -- re census records); after William died his family left Carroll Co. and Lewis may have gone to AR with part of the family; by 1856, however, he was in Grimes Co., TX with a paternal uncle; there he married and had a son, his wife dying in childbirth; Lewis next appears in Jefferson Co., AR where in Dec. 1858, he married Harriett Pritchett Henry; he and Harriett had a son born in AR, then returned to TX before the outbreak of the Civil War; Lewis served in the war in the trans-Mississippi theater and survived until the end of the war; in May 1865 he sent a message which originated in LA to Harriett saying that he was on his way home; he never returned; a year later Harriett had him declared legally dead and married a man named Asa Saxon; Harriett raised Lewis's son by his first marriage, her own son with Lew! is, and a daughter born in the spring of 1862 who died as a teenager; she and Asa also had a number of children; Harriet died in 1922 in Creek Co., OK (7) John Marion Shelton (b. Aug. 25, 1859, Jefferson Co., AR; d. Aug. 18, 1925, Eastland Co., TX) --- Marion (as he was known to his family) grew up with mother and siblings in TX and OK, returning to TX in his teens where he and his older half-brother lived with family and friends; in 1887, Marion married Nancy Abagail Fleming in Limestone Co., TX; she was the daughter of John Franklin Fleming and Mary Elizabeth Fry and was b. Mar. 26, 1872, Monroe Co., AL and d. Mar. 19, 1918 in Robertson Co., TX; Marion and Nancy raised their children in Limestone and Robertson Cos. in TX after most of them having been born in Grimes Co., TX; Marion died in 1925 of a chronic kidney disease while visiting my grandparents in Ranger, Eastland Co., TX (8) John Lewis Franklin Shelton (b. Dec. 14, 1894, Grimes Co., TX; d. Aug. 28, 1948, Dallas, TX) --- Lewis (as he was called in the family) served in France during WWI; after the war he married Jewell Edna Bryant in Falls Co., TX; Lewis was a carpenter, farmer, and later constable in Ranger, TX; the family moved around a bit --- their son was born in OK and my mother in Haskell Co., TX --- but their main home was in Eastland Co. where the house my grandfather built still stands in good condition; unfortunately, Grandpa Lewis was an alcoholic and died early from cirrohis of the liver (9) Edna Evelyn Shelton (b. Mar. 10, 1927, Haskell Co., TX; d. Jan. 17, 1989, Howell Co., MO) --- my mother married twice; she married my father, Artice Virgil Watson, in Irving, TX in 1945; he was career Army and they divorced in 1948; in 1951 she married my step-father (the man I call Daddy) in Weatherford, TX; Daddy is still with us here in MO at age 84; Mother died of cancer in 1989 at age 61; she is greatly missed (10) Janice Ann Watson (b. July 20, 1946, Eastland Co., TX) --- this is me; I've also been married twice with 3 sons from my first marriage to Anton Ervin Miller; no children with 2nd husband Larry Allen Lindley; 2 of my sons survive (my youngest died in a car accident 6 years ago); I have 16 (15 surviving) grandchildren and am a retired social worker; I live in West Plains, MO near most of my grandchildren So -- that is my Shelton line. I have a LOT of info on the Sheltons; unfortunately at this point is almost all on paper in a file cabinet. I am working to transfer this to my computer program, but am by no means finished as yet. Would love to hear from you again and wish you the best of luck in your research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
