The dates given in the manuscript of Margaret Augusta Shelton cannot be correct, among other things these dates would make John, II, married to Eleanor Parks seven years before he released his guardian at the presumed age of 21 years. I will make an inquiry for you of the only source of which I am aware that might have data on Sarah. If I learn anything, I'll contact you. I am not related to the Shelton family, and have only recently begun the search and right off the bat I saw mistakes and inconsistencies in what I had found. Such as, I came across two dates for Maj. Thos. Shelton's death- one source listed that he died at 75 years, the other had him living until he was 103! Since my first post on this subject, I have been able to find out that there is a small slave graveyard at Rural Plains- if I heard correctly there are no headstones, only depressions in the ground- my source on this is the National Parks Service who now own the house and are preparing to open it soon for tours. My hope was to find amongst the family papers and lore an idea where John and Eleanor Parks Shelton are buried, so far I have not found it. Does any one have a month and day for Sarah Shelton Henry's birth? Since she was listed as being two years younger than P. Henry the year is easy to figure- it's the month and day we are hoping to find. Scotchtown will soon be planting a tree to replace one that had to be cut down, and we had all wondered when Sarah's birthday might be so to have a small ceremony in her honor. Again let me thank you for the information you gave on the Sheltons of Rural Plains. You have helped me to be able to enrich our tours with clear information on a very old and important family in Hanover County history. I hope all Sheltons will come to Hanover and visit Scotchtown, we would love to meet you and show you the house! All the best. Author: HCS21 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.shelton/3279.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The man referred to as Major Thomas Shelton in the history of the Shelton family originating at Rural Plains, Hanover County, VA, was the son of David Shelton, son of John Shelton who built Rural Plains. The source for date of his death is the Providence Presbyterian Session Book where it is recorded he died on June 19, 1826, at the age of 75 years. This book is held in the collection of The Library of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia. The will of Major Thomas Shelton was probated on July 10. 1826, Louisa County Will Book 7, page 161. . Sarah "Sally" D. Miller was the third wife of Major Thomas Shelton. The marriage bond was issued July 1, 1823, Goochland County, Virignia, with the marriage taking place on July 4. Massie Shelton was the daughter of Major Thomas Shelton and his first wife, Cicley Dabney whose marriage bond was issued on February 12, 1782, Louisa County, Virginia. Massie Shelton was born about 1789. She married her cousin, John Payne Shelton. The marriage bond was issued on July 15, 1805, and the ceremony was performed on July 28, 1805, from Goochland County, Virginia, records. Her will was probated November 10, 1862, recorded Louisa County, VA, Will Book page 289. For, the record, the second wife of Major Thomas Shelton was Sarah "Sally" Farrar with Louisa County, VA, marriage bond dated May 12, 1809. Her marriage contract with Major Thomas is on file in Louisa County, VA, Deed Book L, page 234, recorded August 14, 1809. Colonel Joseph Shelton was the son of David Shelton, son of John Shelton, builder of Rural Plains; therefore, a brother of Major Thomas Shelton. Given in the Revolutionary War Application papers (S-7481) filed by Joseph is the date of his birth: March 16, 1761. Colonel Joseph Shelton was a Scout for LaFayette. He died intestate in 1846. See Appraisal and Settlement in Goochland County records (Deed Book 34, p. 358, dated May 26, 1846) and in Louisa County records. Sarah Shelton, who married Patrick Henry reputedly at age 16 in the parlor of Rural Plains, was the daughter of John Shelton, II, son of John Shelton, builder of Rural Plains. John Shelton, II, and David Shelton were brothers and when John, II, released his guardian David was witness. Therefore, Sarah Shelton and Major Thomas Shelton were first cousins, the children of brothers. The portraits on loan to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities which hang at Scotchtown are those of Major Thomas Shelton, his second wife Sarah D. Miller, his daughter Massie Shelton (Mrs. John Payne Shelton) and his brother, Joseph Shelton. Major Thomas Shelton was buried at "Roseneath", his home in Louisa County. Colonel Joseph Shelton was possibly buried at "Old Town", Louisa County, VA, the home of his father, David Shelton. Joseph Shelton was the last of his family to die. A Researcher has noted "In 1961 there was evidence of a cemetery at Old Town. House gone. Field of corn where house stood" and also stated the site though to be the cemetery was a thicket. A Researcher who was a Shelton descendent stated about Sarah D. Miller :"Tradition says she died and was buried at a place now owned by Mrs. Dorey on #250. She returned to this place, her old home, after the death of Major Thomas." When you ask if there is a Shelton family Bible, to my knowledge, there is no one huge old Bible which was at Rural Plains with the names of all the generations. There are Bibles which were at Rural Plains early on the line but I do not think there is a Bible in the sense that I think you wish to use it. Neither do I think there is a cemetery at Rural Plains which conventiently has headstones that names everyone, giving birth and death dates. Let me give credit where credit is due for this data, a large part of which comes from the research of Margaret Augusta Shelton, who descended through William Shelton, brother of David and John, II. The great-great-great-great-great-grandfather of Margaret Augusta was the first cousin of Sarah Shelton Henry. Margaret Augusta was born in 1908 in Louisa County and died in the late 1980s, living at Maidens, VA. She compiled a mountain of research notes on the family, with asides from her knowledge of the family. There is no index and the bulk of the data is made up of the equivalent of family group sheets supplemented with copies of legal documents such as wills and deeds. A microfilm of this document, (about 500 pages) can be borrowed from the Family History Library of The Church of the Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) and it is entitled "Shelton Collection, ca 1713-1987" by Margaret Augusta Shelton. The first question is this: there are 4 Shelton portraits at Scotchtown, the home of Patrick Henry. 1. Maj. Thomas Shelton (I have two different dates for his death) 2. Sarah "Sallie" Miller, 3rd(?) wife of Thomas Shelton 3. Massie Shelton, daughter of Thomas 4. Joseph Shelton I have conflicting data on Joseph. I have him as the brother of Thomas, and I have seen him as the son. Maj. Thomas Shelton is either the uncle or first cousin of Sarah Shelton, wife of P. Henry? Is there a Shelton family Bible? Does Rural Plains have a graveyard on the property? Does anyone know where the above mentioned Sheltons are buried? I do have many more questions, but these are the ones I am seeking at the moment. Living with Rebecca, James, F. G.(?), and two more I cant read. Both of his parents are shown as foreign born. Samuel Shelton was born in Tenn., but the only wife I know of was Prudence Miller. I don't know when their marriage was so it could be that Sam had an earlier wife. I don't remember the story of the slander suit. I have no knowledge of Jessie being the son of Samuel Shelton. In fact I have speculated that he is the son of one James Shelton. That James is the father of Jessie is pure speculation. There is a James Shelton living in St John's Twp, Franklin Co, Missouri, in the 1830 Census. The following people are with him: 1 male under 5, 1 male between 5 and 10yrs, 1 male between 10 and 15, 1 male between 30 and 40, 1 male between 50 and 60, 1 female under 5, 1 female between 5 and 10, 1 female between 10 and 15, 1 female between 15 and 20, 1 female between 20 and 30. This is could easily be Jessie Shelton's father and mother. It may interest you to know that Samuel and Prudence Shelton are buried on the old Richardson Cemetery near New Haven, MO. Three of the children of Winchester L. Shelton are also buried there. Winchester was the youngest son of Samuel and Prudence. A disaster seems to have struck the Richardson family around 1850 leaving only the young people. The Shelton family must have purchased the land after that. After the civil war, Nathan Richardson married Elizabeth Elmira Shelton. Nathan's twin sister, Elizabeth Eden Richardson married Robert Bruce Shelton. So...Elizabeth Richardson became Elizabeth Shelton, and Elizabeth Shelton became Elizabeth Richardson. Confused? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The prices listed are for new members. If you are a current member of FamilyTreeDNA, you still get a discount until Aug. 31, 2008, but not as great as the prices for new members. Margaret Shelton

I also recall a suit in McMinn, Tenn ( though I do not have the documents) that one William Dooley was charging one Samuel Shelton ( ca 1820)a neighbor with running off to Missouri with his young wife Mourning Dooley and I think a couple kids. I'd love to check in Tenn. to find if this is truth. I believe you also found where this very same Sam'l was involved in a slander suit in Franklin county ca. 1828 regarding some event in Tenn. I'd love it if some of our relatives in Tennesee would run down this rumor and see if Jesse D. was one of those youngsters that 'fled' to Missouri with Samuel and Mourning or if this is all talk.
