    3. One of my distant cousins, commanded a group of union men in TN. Colonel Fielding HURST of McNairy Co TN, led the Sixth Tennessee Cavalry, a Union regiment. He used his land which cover an area roughly 5 miles by 15 miles for union sympathizers and it was called Hurst Nation. As you might imagine it creates controversy even today. 3. For some reason, the below mentioned not excluded, we find a few union sympathizers from the McMinn area enlisting in Indiana.... I wonder why? Was it just that a group of them went there to enlist outside what was considered the 'south'. Witnessed by John Locke (by attorney Return J. Meigs; Palatiah Shelton by Attorney R.J. Meigs and R.J. Meigs The cast of Characters: Gideon Morgan, Jr. was the son of Gideon Morgan, Sr. and was 1/2 Cherokee. A. Shelton - not sure exactly who he is since we have A.J. Shelton in the county but also have Azariah in the same area. Palatiah Shelton - Big question as to which one he is. I suspect it is the same Palatiah as is showing earlier in Blount County R.J. Meigs, attorney - the son of Cherokee Indian Agent, Return Jonathan Meigs In my opinion this offers a lot of creedance to the theory of the Cherokee connections of the Sheltons in southeast TN. to the Cherokee Joyce Gaston Reece

I emailed it to my OK cousin who knows all of the Shelton family going back to 1700. It is a beautiful photo! If there is a connection, she will get with you. He was rumored to have been born in Arkansas, and came to Texas Via Alabama, Louisiana. He has been found in a Kaufman County Census, and a Nacodoches County Texas Census with Minerva as his wife stating they were married in 1895. His Tomb Stone states that he was born August 22, 1861 and died in a buggy accident in Carthage Texas on January 30, 1917. I am unsure if he is the Joseph you are looking For as many of the kids at (my great Aunts and Uncles)have him listed as Joe/Joseph/J. L./Louis/Lewis/some even say his middle name was Lafayette. I can find a Birthcertificate but I am not able to purchase it for my Great Aunt Lizzie (Emma Elizabeth Shelton) Born in Kaufman, Kaufman County, Texas, USA. If we are related, please contact me at rlg0422@aol.com. Sincerely, Robin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
