    3. Dear Debbie & All: Interesting about the church.  Do you know what denomination?  Pre-emigration, I only find info on Robert being in Georgia & North Carolina so far but that's all.  Troublesome how little I have found on this Young family.  The earliest record I found on Robert was the 1817 Emigration Census which has Spencer & Susannah (respectively) listed right under Robert.  With no wife given for Robert but one given for Spencer one could suppose Robert was still single then.    Spencer & Robert are both reported as living in Nautly, NC, on this list.  I think I have a copy of the original scripted document somewhere.  Right now I'm trying to piece together sort of a timeline of this family.  With so many of the same names repeated in different generations (ugh!) I'm hoping to better distinguish (by age) which Spencer did what, for example.  I will post my study.......  (I'm on my knees and reverently bowing down towards Norway right now.  Thank you again!  Sheila --- On Sat, 12/27/08, Deborah Shelton Wood <familytreees@aol.com> wrote: From: Deborah Shelton Wood <familytreees@aol.com> Subject: Re: [SHELTON] Who are Spencer & Robert? 3. Dear Dolores:  After reading your email I looked up "Pritchett" in my database and got a hit among the Cherokee Sheltons.  Eliza Pritchett married Charles (Charley) Proctor, son of Johnson Proctor & Lizzie Foreman.  Charley also married Louisa Townsend.  I don't have dates on either marriage.  The exciting news, however, is that Charley is the brother of Margarette Ta-ka-tan-nee Proctor who married Spencer Oo-lo-v-su-tu Shelton.  I don't have an exact birthdate for Charley; but his sister, Margarette, was born 1 May 1846.  I don't have any more on Eliza but with the Shelton/Cherokee connection it looks good.  Hope this helps.  Regards, Sheila   P.S.  I'm working on some other replies in the scope of this discussion.  For now I'd like to take a moment to thank Hildred for her research on the Young family.  ALSO, a great big special thanks to our cousin in Norway, Duane Mills.  Your work in the Cherokee area has been such a valuable tool.  So good & so professional.  You are to be commended.  I cannot thank you enough for your sharing your work with me.  S.G. 3. I CHECKED THE 1850 U. S. CENSUS FOR PATRICK COUNTY, VA, ON ANCESTRY.COM FOR ANDREW YOUNG. I FOUND "AND. J. YOUNG" AGE 44 YEARS WITH OCCUPATION LISTED AS "AGENT". HIS WIFE IS LISTED AS "MARTHA", AGE 38 YEARS, AND THERE WERE NINE CHILDREN RANGING IN AGE FROM TWO YEARS TO NINETEEN YEARS. ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF THIS HOUSEHOLD WERE BORN IN VIRGINIA. REGARDING ETHNIC BACKGROUND, THIS CENSUS HAS A COLUMN HEADED "COLOR" WITH THE CHOICES BEING "WHITE", "BLACK" AND "MULATTO". I FOUND ONE PERSON WHOSE "COLOR" WAS INDICATED AS "B". ALL OTHER NAMES I CHECKED, IN BOTH VIRGINIA AND NEW YORK, HAD IN THE "COLOR" COLUMN A DOT OR A CHECK OR A STRAIGHT MARK WHICH LOOKED SOMEWHAT LIKE THE NUMBER "1". "AND. J. YOUNG" HAD A DOT IN THE "COLOR" COLUMN AS DID OTHER NAMES IN PATRICK COUNTY WHICH I HAPPEN TO KNOW WERE OF CAUCASIAN ANCESTRY, SO I THINK ONE CAN ASSUME MR. YOUNG WAS INDICATED AS "WHITE". HILDRED

Not sure if they tells us he was a white man, American Indian or what? His son married into my Shelton line in VA. This Andrew Young was abt 1810- bef 1880. The Youngs also married into my ALLEN and WITCHER lines. Debbie

    3. Sheila, I'm sure you know that Roderick Shelton I, in addition to his legal marriage to Ursula Briggs, had an "Indian maiden" on the side by whom he sired offspring. This woman, whom he called her Mary Glomdalglich after a character in Gulliver's Travels, later married William Franklin and her children by Roderick took the name Franklin. A DNA test of this line of Franklins would be interesting. I have Cherokee ancestry, but not through Shelton to my knowledge: this is not my line. Of course, I speak only of the Shelton line that I know. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.
