Author: watersdian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.shelton/2333.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I wish I had more accurate information about Green Shelton - whether or not he was Thomas's father or uncle, but I can find no records. The reason that I feel he was probably Mary's brother was based on information that was recorded in Warren County's court records; he is listed along with Mary, Martha, and other Shelton's as being assigned "guardians" in the 1850's. I guess because Native Americans did not receive their rights of citizenship until the 1920's, they needed guardians for legal purposes. I am basing that on info I researched in the CHEROKEE MESSENGER. By the way, these same Sheltons were listed as Johnson's in the 1850 Warren County, GA census. I have noticed that Jane is always listed as a white female, yet the children are mulatto. No male near her age is ever listed, however she is listed as Jane Johnson next to a Henry Shelton in the 1830 Warren County census. I have wondered if the father of Janes's children could have been an Indian; there are many! male Sheltons that were listed on the Dawes Roll as well as other rolls that documented Indian removal to the reservations. As for the Green Shelton born in 1810, I have tried to find a tie to our group, but so far-no luck.I realize I am grabbing at straws, so let me know what you think or know. Maybe we can put some more of this puzzle together. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He would've been the uncle of Thomas, not his father. Sorry for the mistake, I've fixed it now. A Cherokee connection would explain some of the same Sheltons being listed as white in one census & mulatto in another. I hadn't thought of that before. There was a Green Shelton (WWM, 70, pauper) next door to Martha J Shelton (Jane's daughter, I think) & her daughters in the 1880 census. Could he be Jane Shelton's brother? I've also seen Thomas's death certificate. I guess we'll never know who his father was. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: watersdian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.shelton/2333.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thomas would have been my great grandfather. Callie's brother, Rob, was my grandfather. He always said that there was Indian blood in the family-he thought that it could have been Cherokee. I assume that would be the reason the "race" changed from mulatto to white in the census reports as time passed. There are several Sheltons listed as white, mulatto, and black in records of that time, however. The land in the Warren County area was subject of several land lotteries in the early 1800's. The land originally belonged to the Creek and Cherokee, and many married into the pioneer families that settled in these counties. I have not found much to verify my theory. I have found Thomas's death certificate with Mary being listed as his mother, but the father is listed as unknown. I noticed that you have Green listed as his father - do you have any verification? I would love to solve this piece of the puzzle. Thank you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am glad that I did not include the ship in my book about the Sheltons. A relative shared that information with me. However, I notice that 150 people did survive the sinking ship and although marooned on Beruda for nine months, built two new boats and sailed May 10, 1610. Perhaps the relative knew something about our Shelton surviving. I am not that computer savy so do not know how I would prove or disprove his information. Was her father the same Thomas Shelton who was listed as "Thomas J 2yrs mulatto" in the Glascock Co. census of 1860? In the 1870 census "Thomas J 12yrs white" is living with "Mary Shelton 31yrs mulatto." Next door are some Howells. I'm pretty curious about the mixed-race aspect of these relationships because my grandfather, Asa Hadden, son of Callie Shelton & Fleming Hadden, always talked about there being "black blood" in our family, but no one knew if he was serious. I am not sure how it fits with the Shelton family I am interested in. They were in Dickson, Maury and Perry TN in the 1820's and 1830's. My direct ancestor purchased land in Perry in 1824. Others in the family (not in my direct line) who were in OK (some by 1890, others in 1900) went via IL and MO, and they went primarily to the area around Oklahoma City. While I can not document a relationship between my Middle TN Sheltons and Flavious Josephus Shelton, I suspect they were related. I was wondering if they ended up in the same part of OK, and it does not appear that they did. But it would not surprise me if the family ties remained after several generations. Thanks again.
