Among them are the Sheltons of Rural Plans, Shelton in Stafford co VA, the family of Ralph Shelton and Mary Pollard. My ancestor is Ralph Shelton of Middlesex co VA who has no connection to a James. My Ralph transported to Virginia prior to 1702 and married Mary. He was born probably 1665-1680 and his origins and parentage is not known. There really is no founder of the Sheltons of Virginia

    3. I have been reading, with great interest, the messages on the Shelton board concerning the James Shelton of 1610 that 'founded' the Shelton family in VA. It seems my Shelton line has been in the Fredericksburg area since the Ark came down the Rappahannock River but I can not find a link to this James. I have read how this James was the patriarch of the Western VA family line but I have been told by numerous researchers that my Shelton line is not part that line [the Middlesex line]. My brother has refused to contribute to the DNA testing-saying that it's a government ploy, [yeah I know :)] - and I have no other close male Shelton relatives still living that I could ask. Is there anything in anyone's research that links that James Shelton of 1610 [or any of his kin] in any way to the King George-Fredericksburg-Stafford County areas of Virginia? I have been told that my Shelton line goes back directly to a William Shelton Sr., ca 1700s, coming from Charles County, Maryland to Stafford. My line comes from him as follows: William Sr. marries unknown has multiple unfound children, including-- William Jr. marries Margaret Nelson, multiple unfound children include-- Edward Shelton, past constable of Stafford County, War of 1812, married Nancy [Ann] last name unknown, multiple children include Rodney, Rowzee, Samuel and.... George Gustavus marries Lucinda Pates, multiple children include John, Belinda, Mason, Octavia Ellen, and... George Wellington marries Mariah Perry 1860, children are Chancellor, Rose, Alberta, Alexander, Manning, Richard Walker, Robert Lee, Charles, William and.... Basil Gustavus [1877-1898] marries Lizzie Shelton 1894, children are Ashton, Gizzie, Essie and.... Hugh Calvin [1894-1934] marries Mary Sullivan 1916, children are Hugh Jr., James, Jane, and.... Gene Francis Shelton [1927-1983] marries Jo Ann Keller--these are my parents. I have been able to document back to Edward then I have only William Deyo's info from an email and some family bible stories to rely on from there. I appreciate any help or information anyone can give. I also offer my research services for anyone that needs research done in the Fredericksburg area. The Virginiana Room in the local library is a treasure trove of info. I'll be happy to do look ups for people who can't get to this area. 3. Hi Janet We have corresponded before on many subjects; apologies if I have previously sent- from another researcher dated 1998 (I do not have their documentation) Surety for marriage bonds for Moses Hurt Shelton and Nancy Clark Shelton were Crispin Shelton, son of Spencer and Clara Shelton.Moses and Nancy had four children in Pittsylvania County and then moved to Todd County, Kentucky about 1835; where they had four more children. Final move to Lawrence County, Missouri about 1848 and there had four more children. Moses Hurt Shelton was b. 20 Mar 1804 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. He died 24 Oct 1869 in Lawrence Co.,MO. He married Nancy Clark Shelton 23 Oct 1828, in Pittsylvania Co.,VA, daughter of Crispin & Mary Waller Shelton. The Moses H. Shelton family moved from Pittsylvania Co., VA to Todd Co., KY in 1833. They came to Lawrence Co., MO in 1847 and settled in Vineyard Township. They had 12 children, listed below: William Edward Shelton, b. 3 Mar 1830, VA Mary Ann Shelton, b. 22 Dec 1831, VA Crispin Robertson Shelton, b. 14 Apr 1833, VA Virginia Freelove Shelton, b. 5 May 1835, KY Charles Coleman Shelton, b. 30 June 1837, KY Pieter Helen Shelton, b. 19 Mar 1839, KY Gideon Thompson Shelton, b. 24 Dec 1840, Ky John Douglas Shelton, b. 22 Sept 1843, KY (My Greatgrandfather); Elizabeth Catherine Shelton, b. 20 Jan 1849, MO James Buckhannon Shelton, b. 14 Nov 1856, MO Walter Clark Shelton, b. 13 Sept 1860, MO Moses & Nancy and other members of the Shelton family are buried in the Old South Bend Cemetery, Vineyard Twp.,Lawrence Co, MO. >Household #413 is that of a William P. (???) Shelton, wife Lettus, and several children, including another Coleman. My 4th great grandfather is William P. Shelton 1797-1852 m.Susannah L. Hurt; from Pittsylvania to Muhlenberg/Todd. April Miller states there is a William Preston Shelton in Todd County. I found this From 'Todd County Kentucky Newspaper and Abstracts' : G.W. Shelton and William P. Shelton put up bond of $100.00 for marriage of G.W.Shelton and Penelope F. Shelton. Elkton and Todd County. April 9th, 1860. This may be my William P. and his brother George Wyatt but have no idea who Penelope is. There is a Coleman V. Shelton m. Judith J. Turner July 19, 1833 in Muhlenberg County, KY. (neighboring county). This Coleman is son of Reddick Shelton and Nancy Hurt Shelton, widow of Thomas Shelton. > and advise me on research pitfalls/suggestions. I found the most in the records room at the courthouse and please! go to circuit court , tell them you are researching genealogy and ask for the key to the closet. It is a small room with miscellaneous records in no order whatsoever. Plan to spend some time there. I found the hand written permission note from my 2nd great grandmother for my great grandmother to marry as she was underage and dated 1895. It was in a shoe box (no kidding). I did not unwrap the papers tied with string as I was afraid they would crumble as they were very brittle; now I wished I had as I wonder what I missed. Best of luck with your research; and have some fun. Jan Shelton Nixon

    1. Research in Todd Co., KY (anyone done it?)
    2. Hello Everyone, I am in Joplin, MO, taking care of family business. I drove THROUGH Todd County, KY on November 11, which sadly was Veterans Day. The side trip off of I-64 was a last minute thought when I realized if I got up early that morning I could maybe do some research, but forgot it was Veterans Day. I had planned to return to VA on Wednesday, but I caught some awful stomach flu bug and was down for a few days. I am probably going to have a chance to go back through Todd County next week on Tuesday or Wednesday. I am particularly interested in looking for any probate papers/circuit court cases, etc., that would provide documentation that my gg grandfather Moses Hurt Shelton who died in Lawrence County Missouri in 1869, was indeed the son of Coleman Shelton. I know that they, Moses & Coleman, are next door to each other on tax list in Todd Co. KY ca 1840 that I found at DAR in Washington, D.C. Coleman is said to be the son of Beverly Shelton and Ann Coleman, grandson of Crispin and Letitia ?? (FYI, a highly-qualified Montague researcher thinks she's probably a Paine/Payne for alot of reasons.). (Yes, I know that both Coleman and his son Moses married Shelton cousins carrying that surname, descendants of Beverly's siblings Gabriel and Vincent.) My gg grandfather Coleman (I believe) is 75 years old in the 1850, District 2, Todd Co. KY census, in household #417 of N. (???) C. Shelton, and a number of other Sheltons. Household #413 is that of a William P. (???) Shelton, wife Lettus, and several children, including another Coleman. The census taker had very stylized letters. I am curious if any of you have ever researched for Coleman (or extensively for other Sheltons) in Todd Co. I am hoping someone can also tell me the location of District 2 in Todd County, and advise me on research pitfalls/suggestions. Such as is there a local library worth a visit. I am also interested if there might be a chance that he died in Logan County, as opposed to Todd County. I actually (fear) he probably had already distributed his assets to his children before death, and there was no need for probate, but don't know this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will be unhooking my computer (no laptop) early Sunday night, so if any of you have suggestions I'd very much appreciate it. If I have time, and I am told it hasn't been done, I will try to collect any Shelton probate files in the early part of Todd County that I run across. Thanks so much in advance. Best regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter

    3. I believe it is confirmed that Roderick Shelton, sometimes referred to as Roderick I, had an Indian consort who came to him to Shelton Laurel from Pennsylvania. This "Indian maiden" had a son by Roderick who later took the surname of his stepfather. This son was known as William "Duck" Franklin. I have corresponded with a person who claims descent from Duck Franklin. I don't have the dates for this. I also won't presume to try to give any more on that line, but we may hear from this descendant. I think she's still on this list. This Roderick legally married Sarah Ursula Briggs and is of the Ralph Shelton/Middlesex line. My line (SH-60) goes back to George Washington Shelton, b. 1824 Shelton Laurel. We believe we are descended from Roderick and Sarah Briggs Shelton but don't have a paper trail to prove it.
