I stumbled across a most interesting web site tonight and there is a Shelton Connection. Go to <_http://www.pbase.com/jacksonville_ga/old_jacksonville_ga_ (http://www.pbase.com/jacksonville_ga/old_jacksonville_ga) >, Even if these are not your Sheltons, you will enjoy the many photos. Just start scrolling down the page and you will find the Sheltons. If this hyperlink fails to transmit, e-mail me directly, and I will send it to you privately. Enjoy, Jim Webb - Jacksonville, Floirda

According to this he was born ca 1820 and died Nov. 18, 1895 in Owen Co., KY. He married Ellen Kitchen. However, I have only one child listed for him--Daniel Samuel (b. July 16, 1856, Owen Co., KY; d. Sept. 30, 1903, Owen Co., KY) m. Nancy Ellen Judy on Mar. 10, 1880 in Owen Co., KY. Daniel had 2 children: Ben Wilmer Shelton (no further info) and Ira Matthias Shelton (b. Apr. 11, 1883, Owen Co., KY; d. Mar. 9, 1940, Louisville, KY) m. Effie Goddard (b. June 26, 1888, Owen Co., KY) on Feb. 10, 1910 in Great Crossings, Scott Co., KY. Sorry, I don't have parents for Preston either.
A few days ago someone was asking for info on Preston Lawrence Shelton. I didn't find him in my database, but in looking through some old notebooks today, I did find some info on him. If the person seeking the info will contact me by e-mail, I will send them the info I have. Jan in MO

This DNA project is open to any male with the last name of Shelton, Skelton, Chilton, Sheldon or any other spelling that may have been written in records where there is some confusion. This is a cheek swab test, no needles. A kit is sent right to your home. The results take up to 6 weeks from when the kit is returned. Having your results published is optional. You can keep your results totally private. Please start with the 25 marker test as there is not enough information given in the 12 marker test to separate you out from several of the lines. Barb---Wish I could help with your Sheltons, but I don't have either of your Samuels in my data base---lots of others, but neither of those. I can, however, let you know that there are no requirements of proof or documentation on any of the family trees posted on any of the genealogy sites---and no one corrects any mistakes. So take them with a "grain of salt". Merry Christmas and happy hunting!! Currently there are 2 different DNA projects going on. One is mainly by FamilyTreeDNA for those of us trying to trace our families using alleles (markers) and the other is called the Genographic Project by National Geographic and they are trying to trace historical human migration using haplogroups. The Genographic Project is between National Geographic and IBM and is only a five-year research partnership . It started March 2005. Their test is only for the first 12 markers. Both are using the same testing lab in Tucson and with one test you can join the other project. If you test with the Genographic Project you can then join one of our projects for free. If you have already tested with FamilyTreeDNA you can have your results sent to the Genographic Project for $15. There is a box to the right of your name that says "join." If you haven't tested yet, the following site give good pros and cons for going with either test. http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=genographic.html You can now see a major difference in the amount of people listed in our project at the FamilyTreeDNA site and those listed in our newsletter. Besides testers who are not interested in sharing their information, I have had a few people from the Genographic Project join our Shelton/Skelton/Sheldon/Chilton project. These people are not necessarily interested in tracing their immediate families. I write to each one as they transfer in, but so far none has taken me up to join the testers group which has been disappointing. To test with FamilyTreeDNA go here: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=D75896&special=true For more on the Genographic Project go here: https://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/ Margaret Shelton Administrator for the Shelton/Skelton/Sheldon/Chilton DNA project

This is in reply to the messages posted by Janet Hunter and Keith Shelton on 11/29/05 re Sheltons in Todd Co., KY. I looked up these Sheltons on my database and found the following: Moses Hurt Shelton (b. Mar. 20, 1804, Pittsylvania Co., VA; d. Oct. 24, 1869, Lawrence Co., MO) m. Nancy Clark Shelton, d/o Crispen Robertson Shelton & Mary Waller. Moses H. was the s/o Charles Coleman Shelton (b. 1772; d. 1855, Todd Co., KY) and Elizabeth Shelton (b. 1770, Pittsylvania Co., VA; d. 1850). Lettice B. Shelton, d/o Coleman & Elizabeth Shelton, m. William Preston Shelton, s/o Tunstall W. Shelton & Fannie Payne. Here my records differ from Keith's in that I have his name as WILLIAM Preston Shelton instead of JOHN Preston Shelton. Elizabeth Shelton, d/o Coleman & Elizabeth Shelton, m. Matthew Clay Shelton, s/o Tunstall W. Shelton & Fannie Payne. I also found Ophelia D. Shelton listed as a daughter of Tunstall W. Shelton & Fannie Payne, but did not have a husband listed for her. Keith, would you be willing to share her husband's first name so that I can add it to my records? Janet, I think the William P. Shelton listed at #413 in the 1850 Todd Co., KY census is William Preston Shelton and wife Lettice B. Shelton. I have not done a lot of research on these Sheltons as they are not in my direct line. I am descended from Ralph Shelton through son Crispen, through his son, Lewis Shelton. My line went further south---into SC, then GA, then AL, then MS, then AR, then TX. I, and my parents (my mother was a Shelton), did not make it to MO until 1965. Hope to hear from one of you soon. Good luck and good hunting.
