I haven't heard any more from the person needing info on Emoline Shelton, and I've pretty much got my Sheltons under control at this point in time, at least. Give me a day or two to locate a brick wall. hahaha! My Wrights and Martins are Elizabeth Canzada Wright and her half brother Charles D. Martin, who went by the name Wright until 1839. I have quite a bit of info on them, but nothing complete as far as Charles' father goes. I'm not researching the Martins at this time, but will resume again at a later date. I have finally found several sources that place him in a younger branch of the Norfolk Line (Guildhall Studies in London History, a deed with Sir Ralph Shelton in 1479, an indenture with Sir John Shelton in 1500 and chancery records where he had committed to the making and glazing of a window in the church in Shelton co Norfolk). His mother Joan made her will in 1479 in Norwich and mentions her son Nicholas, a son Augustine who was a monk, daughters Margaret and Isabel. He had a house in St Pancras and was associated with the church of St Thomas of Acons as well as the parish of St Helen’s outside Bishopgate in London. He was an alderman of London in 1510 and Sheriff of London 1511-1512. He died in 1515 and in his will made in 1514 asked to be buried in St Thomas of Acons. He was married twice: I do not yet know his first wife’s name, but his second wife was Elizabeth Rawlins da! ughter of Richard Rawlins of London. Nicholas can not be a son of Sir Ralph Shelton and Margaret Clere (the deed of 1479 wherein he was already a member of the Mercer Company in London meant he must have been quite a bit older than the age of 21-Sir Ralph’s eldest son and heir John was not born until 1472 (he was aged 62 when he died in 1539)) and he could not have been a son of John Shelton and Margaret Bures (John died 1431 and his IPM states that his son and heir Ralph was one quarter of a year old at his death). Because of the associations of Nicholas and his children with Sir Ralph, Sir John and the children of Sir John Shelton and Anne Boleyn, the relationship must not be too remote. That makes him most likely a son of Simon Shelton or William Shelton and less likely a son of Thomas Shelton, those three being sons of William Shelton and Catherine Barrett. Nicholas Shelton’s children by his first wife 1. Ralph Shelton: eldest son and heir, mentioned in his father’s will. He was apprenticed to a mercer, Thomas Keyle and a young, unmarried man when he made his will 7 March 1522 where he asked to be buried beside his father in St Thomas of Acons. He died before 5 Nov 1522 when his will was proved. 2. Mary Shelton: a nun at the priory of St Helen’s outside Bishopgate, died 1554 3. Dorothy Shelton: married Thomas Cumberford who was the executor of Nicholas Shelton’s will Children by Elizabeth Rawlins (she married secondly to Sir Humphrey Brown) 4. William Shelton: He served as a searcher in the port of London, was a member of the Middle Temple and a mercer of London. His wife Joan Ferne, inherited Ongar Park co Essex from her uncle Richard Battaile and they also purchased manors of High Ongar and Stanford Rivers. He died in 1553 and Sir John Shelton (the younger) was one of the overseers of his will. The Ongar Park, Essex line descends from him. 5. Jerome Shelton: A mercer and entrepreneur in London and official in the Exchequer. He is the subject of an article in the Guildhall Studies of London History Journal. He was a close associate of Mary Shelton, daughter of Sir John Scudamore and wife of Sir Anthony Heveningham. Letters of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, another close friend place her as a guest in Jerome’s home in 1546. He married Alice Hering and died around 1556 leaving no will and apparently no surviving children. 6. Anne Shelton 7. Julyan Shelton 8. Robert Shelton: His will was dated 16 July 1535 and proven 15 Oct 1535, also buried at St Thomas of Acons. He did not marry and left no children. 9. Thomas Shelton: As an adult engaged in business ventures with his brothers William and Jerome. I have not found info on his wife, children and death etc. 10. Katherine Shelton: Married first to Richard Townshend, a cousin of Sir Roger Townshend of Norfolk. I don't remember this being posted before. In Grainger Co, TN 1800 John Shelton, Jr m Elizabeth Smith, William Shelton, BM This is William Shelton m Sarah Doggett d 1807 in Grainger, TN. I believe this John Shelton, Jr, to be the son of John Shelton, Sr whose father is David Shelton of Caswell, NC. I also believe the John Shelton, Jr m Elizabeth Smith are the John and Elizabeth Shelton found later in Miller Co, MO. Margaret Shelton
