Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wNHBAIB/2943.1 Message Board Post: My ggrandfather Benjamin J. Shelton said in one place that he was born in TN. In all of the other records, he states that he was born in GA. We have not been able to find any record of Ben (b. either 1852 or 1861) or his brother William M. (b. July 4, 1865) or their sister Margaret Shelton (born between 1861 and 1865). The first info we have on them are their marriages in Sevier Co. TN. If they were born in GA, I have no idea what part of the state. Since they were close in age to your Henry Shelton, I was wondering if they could be sibs or cousins. Thank you for listening and for any help that you might be able to give. Ruth Dunlap Brackett

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Shelton, Merritt Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wNHBAIB/2681.1 Message Board Post: Joseph and Permelia (aka Arminta) were my third great grandparents through their daughter Mary M. Shelton Miller. Arminta is the name that came down through the family. My father was scheduled to be named for his mother's grandmother (Arminta Jane Miller) who was named for her grandmother, Arminta Merritt Shelton. However, in her father's War of 1812 pension file, she is listed as Permelia and in his probate record she is called Amelian?! Her father, Edward Merritt, came from Stokes County, North Carolina to Grainger County, Tennessee where he raised his family. In 1857, he gathered those who were willing to move and went to Doniphan County Kansas, where he died in 1866. There were Sheltons in Stokes County, and Joseph may come from one of these lines, but I have never been able to establish a firm connection. John Shelton is the only man listed in the 1840 census of Grainger County with a male in the household of the age to be Joseph, but he doesn't show up in the 1830 census, and the only Shelton man who does, Eli Shelton, has no male in the household the right age. Joseph was consistent in listing his birthplace as Tennessee, but even if I ignore that and look in Stokes County, NC, there are too many possibilities. For the record, Joseph and Permelia were among the party who went to Kansas. Permelia Arminta died in Elwood, Doniphan County in 1904. Joseph died in Burr Oak, Doniphan County in 1913. I have a great deal of information on their Kansas descendents which I would be happy to share if you are interested.

I also have been to the Chilton site at Genforum. I sent one message to that site over a year ago and it has never had a reply.................they don't acknowledge that there are some connections to the Chilton line by the name of Shelton.........but indeed there are as proven by DNA...........I was glad to find where my line actually connects but it is rather disspointing that they don't accept us yet !!!! The DNA people actually got a true Chilton to test to check our tests against...............and Bingo !!! Anyway, its been nice visiting with you and I wish you loads of luck..............if you get any answers about John, James, and William........please let me know. Thanks, BA

Comments about the cemetery are: This is an old cemetery on the north side of state highway 100. A large area nearest the highway was obviously used for burials, but only a few fieldstones and sunken spots remain. This area is beginning to be reused. Recorded December 26, 1988. I want to know the connection of John, James, William, and Joel of Dickson County to each other. My Shelton line believed they were Shelton for over 200 years and we have just learned in the last several years that they are Chilton/Shelton.They started going by Shelton in the mid 1700's. The Virginia Genealogist has much information on these Chilton lines..........most of the Chiltons still don't recognize that we connect to them even though DNA says we do. This is all so weird !! According to my records, both William Calivin Shelton's died in their birth year. HOWEVER, for the first the source is secondary (another website) and I have no source listed for William Calvin born in 1869. Since I don't have a name for George Wilson Shelton's 2nd wife, that leaves the door open to a possibility of the child living, but being cared for by her family. I simply don't know for sure if the baby died in 1869. I would love to learn more. She will give you all the information. This a really helpful thing to do when trying to connect to your line. When I saw you mention Dickson County, Tn. the light bulb went on !!!! I have William Shelton,Sr. . ...some say William F. Shelton b 1767 m. Priscilla Mustain as the father of William N. Shelton b. 1796 m Patsy Payne. I was reading over what you sent and I would like to get my records straight on William Calvin, son of George Wilson and his wife Nancy W. Rice b. 1859 and the William Calvin b. 1869 to George Wilson and his second wife. I failed to write down the death dates of these two William Calvins born to the same father. Could you give me the death dates for both, I neglected to record them. My grandfathers name is John Henry Shelton and his father was John Calvin shelton. Narcissus is a name used through several generations in my family. Beth Ann
