The title Lord is reserved for members of the British peerage and no Shelton has ever had such a title. You are likely referring to various Sir Ralph Sheltons who were from Shelton co Norfolk in England. They have no known connection to any Sheltons in America and that line daughtered out in the main line completely in 1749. Pam Shelton-Anderson

The work of Mildred Campbell Whitaker is not higly regarded as her theory about the origins of Sheltons, Skeltons, Chiltons and Sheldons has been proven false -- that is, all persons bearing those surnames in Colonial Virginia were the same family with the different spellings arising because so few people were literate in the 1600s and early 1700s. A genealogy DNA database of persons with those surnames has proven these are separate family lines, as none of the Shelton DNA tests match Skelton and Chilton.

Janet, Providing blankets to the troops is enough to get you into the DAR. It's my understanding that many signed an oath of allegiance which also gets you in to the DAR. Tina Hall -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2006 8:17 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Shelton-L] Investigating Revolutionary Roderick Shelton Hello Everyone, A while ago I went through not only the Rev. War Pension Applications, but all the Rev War records indices they have at the National Archives for Roderick (and variations). In addition (at DAR), I looked through the NC State Journals Index, which has many listings of payrolls and land warrants, looking for Roderick and all variations of both given and surnames. I also looked through a separate INDEXED book at DAR focussing on NC Rev War lists, that overlaps the NC State Journals. I found nothing for him. I also looked online at the Library of Virginia's Rev War website which has many online images as well. On a separate quest for clarifying a Bentley, I was given the name of three or four separate sets of papers/compilations at the Library of Virginia or the Virginia Historical Society that apparently aren't widely used. Their names are on my other computer. I got a laptop a couple of weeks ago, but haven't got the energy or time to transfer my files yet. Further at DAR there are two or three older books that are unindexed that have LOTS of typed lists of militias, units (regiments, companies what have you), for the Rev. War. I have never paged through them. I also did not look for him in the huge card files at the NC State Archives when I was there four years ago. I would recommend those of you tied to him might send them a research query. _http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/archives/mail.htm_ (http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/archives/mail.htm) Hildred can correct me on this, but I concluded that he probably didn't serve as a soldier in either VA or NC (which would include today's TN), or if so for such a short period of time he fell under the radar so to speak. He very well could have contributed somehow, and it is recorded in a county record somewhere (in VA it was in court order books). For DAR membership, that is enough.
