I have hit a brick wall, I assume on the fact that the family i need used their nicknames in the Census. I am searching family in Lunenburg county, Pleasant Grove area from the 1850's thru 1900. Family has stated that their family is in TN. But unable to make the ties. I found Sandy Shelton b april 1856 in Lunenburg, with sister Mollie b abt 1868 Lunenburg with Mother Edna ( hard to read) b abt 1840 VA, Sandy Shelton married Virginia (?) in abt 1884 in VA and had the following Children, Reginald and Sterling were from another marriage or out of wedlock, Cleveland Shelton b March 1885 Virgina Carter Shleton b May 1886 va Onie Shelton f b October 1887 VA Ernest Wade Shelton b August 1890 VA Benny James Shelton b September 22, 1892 VA Murry Shelton b March 10, 1893 VA Jack Shelton b May 1896, VA Roy Shelton b November 30, 1897 VA Maud Shelton b 1902 VA Milton Shelton b 1903 VA Mark Shelton b 1907 va My line is Bennie James Shelton, unable to find any more about Sandy Shelton and family. Being a mason myself and knowing that masonry has a tendancy to run in families, I'm trying to find a link to my line. The oldest proven member of my line is Jessee Shelton of the "The Descendants of Jessee Shelton" book by Cecil and Louise Shelton. It is beleived that Jessee's parents were Steven W. Shelton and Rhoda Green, but the only document to that end is a rather vague note in the minute book of a small church in Bedford County, TN. Stephen W. was born abt 1760 in VA. Jessee had a significant amount of land in Bedford and Giles County, TN (Stephen W is buried in Giles County). The authors of the book reference much of the "bad" information from the Whittaker book for generations previous to Jessee and note that none of it has documentation. My thought is that if Steven W. is Jessee's father and from VA that it is more likely that the family ties to one of the VA lines. I don't know much about the Ralph Shelton lines, but would be interested to see if any possible links can be made to Jessee or Stephen W. Matt

His sons named Ralph, Jr., Crispin, Daniel, Benjamin and John moved to Pittsylvania County, VA, in 1760-1763. Ralph, Jr., died in Henry County, VA. Several of the sons of Ralph, Jr., with their families, were early settlers in Tennessee or passed through Tennessee into Kentucky and Alabama. An Order of Masons Chapter was organized at Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Courthouse on September 15, 1788, as Lodge No. 24 (Lodges were numbered in order of creation). There were present these members of the Shelton families: Tavenor Shelton, William Shelton, Fred Shelton, Leroy Shelton, Crispin Shelton; and William Shelton was appointed Secretary. Tavenor and Fred (Frederick) were the sons of Abraham, son of Crispin, son of Ralph, d. 1733, Middlesex County, VA. Leroy was the son of Daniel, son of Ralph, d. 1733, Middlesex County, VA, and William was the son of John, son of Ralph, d. 1733, Middlesex County, VA. This Pittsylvania County, VA, Lodge was organized one year before the death of Ralph, Jr., in adjoining Henry County, VA, in 1789. (Henry County was created in 1777 from the territory of Pittsylvania County.) In 1789 Ralph Shelton, III, and his proven son Cuthbert were listed on the Henry County, VA, Personal Property Tax List but Ralph Shelton, III, had received land grants in Hawkins County, Tennessee dated in 1780, 1788 and 1790. Ralph Shelton, III, died in Knox County, Tennessee, about 1815.

No John E with spouse Lucinda and children as listed. It is possible that the connection is father back than Jessee Shelton (He is the subject of the book and was born abt 1799). The children's names (except Bartholomew) are common in the family, so perhaps the connection is from one of Jessee's brothers or cousins. Sorry, this group does not appear to be in the lines covered by this book. Matt Shelton

It seems that a fair number of the Shelton families have ties to various Masonic Lodges. I know that at least the last 3 generation of my line were Masons and I've seen many early records of Sheltons who were Masons. Does anyone have records of Masons in Tennessee from 1799 to 1900? Just curious. Matt Shelton

It's likely that he's connected as a cousin. There were a lot of children in the family in those days. The James in my direct line was born in Aug 1875 and is my ggrandfather. His parents were John Thomas Shelton (b. 2/11/1846 - d. 1/11/1907) and Letha Ann Walker (b. 8/4/1855 - d. 12/27/1902) (I actually have an original framed photo of John and Letha), John Thomas was the son of William Harvey Shelton (b. 7/18/1825 - d. abt 1890) and Rachel Gibson (b. 7/19/1827 - d. abt 1862). William Harvey was the son of Jessee Shelton (b. abt 1799 - d. 7/13/1865), who is the subject of the book in this thread. I don't beleive anyone on these lines has joined the DNA project yet, so I'm planning on doing that next year to see if we can make the leap beyond Jessee to connect to one of the other lines. Matt

It was written by Cecil and Louise Shelton and is a descendancy of Jessee Shelton born abt. 1799 in Tennessee. His father is believed to be Stephen W. Shelton and Rhoda Green. There is no specific documentation of his parents other than a notation in a church record that references a Stephen W and Rhoda. The rest of his descendancy is fairly comprehensive and seems well researched. The book also contains references to the Whittaker book, although it makes note that those references cannot be proven (which we know). I have a copy of this book at present and this is the line from which I descend. Most early sources are secondary (Wills, probate and land records) but the links seem generally sound.
