I have since seriously researched Ralph Shelton and his descendants and can find absolutely no proof he was indian. Ralph did not claim to be indian and is well documented in Clairborne and Grainger county records starting in the early 1800´s. I would like to contact Debbie, but her old email address is invalid. If anyone knows her current email address, I would appreciate it. Duane Mills Stavanger, Norway

This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

There was an Elisha in Dickson County who was listed as insolvent in 1821 and 1822. Also, if you have the names of any of brothers and sisters, also their years of birth, I would also like that information. Then I will see what I can find on Bennie James. Too, it would be helpful if you can give me the geographic locations in which you have found Bennie James Shelton. In the 1900 U. S. census for Lunenburg County, VA, I found a household as follows: Sunday Shelton, head of household, b. 1856 Virginia Shelton, wife, b. 1862 Cleveland Shelton, son, b. 1885 Carter Shelton, son, b. 1886 Orie Shelton, daughter, b. 1887 Bennie Shelton, son, b. 1892 Murry Shelton, son, b. 1895 Jack Shelton, son, b. 1896 Roy Shelton, son, b. 1897 In the 1880 Lunenburg County, Va., census I found the person who I believe to be the wife of Sunday Shelton, being one Virginia E. Royal, age 18, born in Virginia, and daughter of Tilman B. Royal, age 49, born in VA, and his wife, Jane F. Royal, age 47, born in Virignia. The children of Sunday Shelton in this 1900 Lunenburg County census which correspond to the ones whom you list for Sandy Shelton are: Cleveland Shelton, b. 1885 Carter Shelton, b. 1886 Orie Shelton, b. 1887 Bennie Shelton, b. 1892 Jack Shelton, b. 1896 Roy Shelton, b. 1897. I cannot find Sunday Shelton listed in any previous nor any following census. My own reading of this -- for which I have no proof -- is that both Sandy Shelton, b. 1856, of the 1880 Lunenburg County census and Sunday Shelton, b. 1856, of the 1900 Lunenburg County census are the same person, being the son of William T. Shelton and Ellen A. Shelton.

He married Sarah Keys. The other was Mark Anthony Chilton born 9/15/1786 died 10/17/1848. As far as I can tell most of this family was from VA and KY. You might try finding the book Thomas Chilton's "History of the Chilton Family".

He married Catherine Heneage b. 1618. I'm most interested in the 7th and 8th generations which are my GGG and GG grandfathers Thomas and Medley Chilton. Medley changed from Chilton to Chelton in the 1860s and his daughter Susan used Shelton as her last name. She was born in 1857 yet received a letter from her father signed Medley Chelton in 1873, but the 1870 census has him as Shelton. So you can understand the difficulty in tracing any family. The children of Medley and his first wife Martha James were, Julius b. 1849, John T. b. 1851, Susan , b. 1857 her mother was Mary Ann Lake, 3rd wife: Kitty (Catherine) Brown children, Mary F. b. 1859, Elizabeth b. 1861, and Amanda J. b. 1866. They were in Woodford and Mercer Counties in Kentucky.

I found a few online trees that appear to link my Stephen W to that line. All of them, though, seemed to reference a different Jesse Shelton as Stephen's child as they listed completely different children for Jesse. The odd thing was that none of them had any further information about the children and no spouse listed for Jesse. I also found 1860 census data for the Jessee in Bedford County, TN that is definately my Jessee with the children and spouse I expected to see. His age was listed as 63 making his birth year abt. 1797. Matt

Ezekiah/Hezekiah Shelton was the son of Ralph Shelton, II, d. 1789 in Henry County, VA, who was the son of Ralph Shelton, l, who died in 1733 in Middlesex County, VA. Ralph Shelton, I, came into the Colony of Virginia in 1702 as the headright of Thomas Merriwether of Essex County, where the importation record is recorded. However, Ralph served no headright contract and when Thomas died in 1708, he left in his land to Ralph Shelton land in Middlesex County, VA, which shares a boundary line with Essex County.

I know absolutely nothing about them. All that I know about Sheltons in Lunenburg County, VA, is that James Shelton, son of Ralph Shelton, d. 1733, Middlesex County, VA, settled in Lunenburg in the 1760s and his will was proven there in 1798 with an inventory of his estate done in 1799.. He had children as follows: daughter named Rachel who married Aaron Quisenberry daughter named Henrietta who married her cousin, Young Shelton, and moved to Pittsylvania County, VA. son named Benjamin married Anne "Nancy" Hurt and moved to Pittsylvania County, VA. daughter named Caty who married a man whose surname was Mason a son named Stephen a son named David married Elizabeth Shields and lived in Pittsylvania County, VA a son named Thomas moved into North Carolina I do not know where Stephen lived -- whether he stayed in Lunenburg County or also followed his brothers in moving on; however, the following census records imply that he remained in Lunenburg County since the name "Stephen" appears throughout these families in the following years.. Since I have easy access to U. S. census records, I checked the 1880 listing for Sandy Shelton, age 22, making him born in 1858. The head of the household in which he is living is Ellen A. Shelton, age 45 years with, as you stated, a sister named Mollie. I then checked the 1870 census for Ellen Shelton and found her to be the wife of William T. Shelton, b. 1830 in Virginia, and living in his household was a man, John Shelton, age 72 years, born in Virginia, whom one would assume was William's father. Also in the household was a son named Stephen A. Shelton, age 12 yrs and b. in 1858, the same year as the Sandy Shelton of the 1880 census. I rather suspect "Sandy" was Stephen A. Shelton's nickname. In the 1860 census William heads a household with Ellen as his wife and son Emmett, age 5 yrs; son William, age 3 yrs; son John, age 2 yrs; and a woman named Sabith Lester, age 60 years whom one might speculate was Ellen's mother. I did not find William in the 1850 Lunenburg County, VA, census; however, I found the household of John W. Shelton, age 55 years and b. in 1795 in Virginia with resident in his household Stephen Shelton b. 1827, Nancy Shelton b. 1831 and Lewelling Shelton b. 1837. John's wife was obviously deceased and he appears to be the John living in the household of William Shelton in the 1870 census.
