John married Jane MacLean (b. abt. 1824) probably in January 1848 in New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland. They had 6 children, the first five of which were born in Slamannan, Stirling, Scotland (christened at St. Ninians), and the sixth was born in 1865 in Sodom, Trumbull County, Ohio: Robert, John, Martin, Thomas, James, and William.
