List, In the past there have been offers of a book listing your "Shaw relatives. My cousin bought one about ten years ago out of Ohio. It had listings of Shaws, but no relationships or genealogies. With the exception of Zip Code, the phone book has as much data. There are organizations for Shaws and other surnames that have much more value. Consider one of them. It is a bit late to reply to this, but I can't ignore it. Genealogy columns have been warning people about the one in Bath, Ohio for years. (I suspect, but do not know that the one in Denver is very similar.) They publish a book about 3 - 6 times a year on a single surname. It typically includes a general description of the name, a picture of a "Family Coat of Arms" (see below), a brief biography of a few people with the surname, and (the bulk of the book) the telephone listings of everyone of the surname they can locate. For most of us, it is a rip-off. But -- and this is a matter of expectations -- a friend of mine ordered the book for his surname and was very pleased with what he received. His was a very "rare" surname and he had never determined from what part of Italy it came, and using the telephone book listings, he located several relatives. So, you can never tell. IMHO, Shaw is is a common name and there is so much information available on the 'net and elsewhere, it would be a total waste of money for anyone with access to boards such as this to buy such a book. A note on "Family" Coats of Arms: In most, if not all, nations, coats of arms were issued to single individuals -- not families. If you lived in one of those nations, you could be prosecuted for displaying it as your own. Of course, in America, every person has the right to bear arms and does not need such a symbol of his right to do so. And, in fact, I have a copy of the Scots "Clansmans' Badge" (derived from the arms of the chief) hanging on my wall. In addition, I have copyrighted my own arms "just for the heck of it." QUOTE OF THE DAY Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. --Thomas Paine ----- Original Message ----- From: "scotsami" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 11, 2005 5:57 PM Subject: Re: [SHAW] Possible family book scam > List, > In the past there have been offers of a book listing your "Shaw > relatives.
