Robert Shaw was my great grandfather, born in Kilsyth, Scotland, in 1831, the son of David Shaw and Ann Aitken. He had a twin sister, Agnes, and his other siblings were Jean (b. 1816), Andrew (1818), John (1820), Matthew (1822), Elizabeth (1824), Ann (1826), David (1829), and Barbara (1834). Robert married Barbara Corner in 1853 at Renfrew Abbey, Paisley, and emigrated to Australia in the "Anna", which sailed from Liverpool, disembarking in Sydney in February, 1855. They settled at Minmi, near Newcastle, N.S.W., where Robert worked in the coal mines until his death in 1877 from English cholera. Robert's children were Catherine (b.1851), Annie (1854), Barbara (1856), David (1858 - killed in a railway accident in 1875), William (1861 - killed in a mining accident at Lithgow in 1890), Andrew (1863 - my grandfather), Robert (1865), John (1868), Jane Euphemia (1871) and Alexander 1874 - drowned in a shipwreck at the mouth of the Clarence River, N.S.W. in 1882).
